As of January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain. Then director Jamie Bailey and writer/producer Simon Phillips revealed they’re already taking advantage of Mickey’s new public domain status by using a version of the character in their slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap. A trailer for that movie made its way online, but it doesn’t have a release date yet. So technically, the first horror project to use Mickey Mouse is actually the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, which was released through the Night Signal Entertainment YouTube channel yesterday. You can check it out in the embed above.
Here’s the info on The Vanishing of S.S. Willie: A lost 1928 documentary about a missing ship is discovered, and its dark secrets unearthed. A...

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. The upcoming video game Infestation 88 will feature a monstrous version of Mickey, while horror movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap is also coming soon.
And that’s just the tip of this iceberg with mouse-shaped ears, as Variety has announced today that another untitled Steamboat Willie/Mickey horror movie is already in the works.
Steven Lamorte, who directed last year’s The Mean One – itself a horror movie that turned the iconic “Grinch” character into a slasher maniac… we’re sensing a pattern here, Steven – will sit in the director’s chair for the upcoming untitled horror-comedy, which will of course center on “a sadistic mouse” who will “torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers.”

Winnie the Pooh got his own (unofficial) horror movie last year with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, and this year it’s Mickey Mouse’s turn to (unofficially) do a little slicing and dicing.
The Mickey Mouse character entered the public domain just yesterday and already the first teaser trailer has been unleashed for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, an upcoming low-budget horror movie that was obviously shot before the character fell into the public domain but is only being announced and previewed now that Disney can’t actually come after the filmmaking team.
How is Mickey Mouse in the public domain, you ask? Well, it’s actually the short film Steamboat Willie (1928) that entered the public domain this year, bringing Mickey along with it. A Killer Mickey video game was also announced already, which is titled Infestation 88.

As of today, the traditionally protective Walt Disney Co will have to deal with an onslaught of Mickey Mouse parodies, mockeries and likely rather explicit variations as the iconic character slips into the public domain.
Sorta.
In the sober light of 2024, Steamboat Willie, the 1928 short that effectively launched the empire that Walt built, can now be used by anyone and everyone. The legal status of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy, from earlier that same year, has been long fought over and probably not something to which Disney was looking forward. Yet, in a new year that also sees Virginia Woolf’s groundbreaking Orlando, Peter Pan, Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus, Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman and Tigger from AA Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner now in the public domain, if you are anticipating a Steamboat Willie free-for-all, think again.

If you’re a fan of animated movies and TV shows, chances are you’ve spotted a recurring feature among your favourite characters.
Not sure what we’re talking about? Look closely at the hands of Genie in Aladdin, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Homer Simpson...
Now do you see it? That’s right... they all have three fingers, instead of four.
Emmy-award-winning animators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh offered some insight into this peculiar trait back in 2017, while discussing how they bring their cartoon characters to life.
In a video for BBC News, they observed that hands are often the most difficult part of a character for animators, and answered that oft-asked question: Why do cartoon characters only have a thumb and three fingers?
“Everybody shortens it to three fingers and a thumb... just simply for an economy of line. When you're having to animate 24 drawings per second,...

Per the official logline for the half-hour comedy series, “‘The Sticky’ revolves around Ruth Clarke (Martindale), a tough, supremely competent middle-aged Canadian maple syrup farmer who’s had it with being hemmed in by the polite, bureaucratic conventions native to her country’s identity. The well-known actor, comedian, TV host and dancer Jaaved Jaaferi spoke about late ‘King of Comedy’ Raju Srivastava. What made him popular was his very earthy and deeply rooted comedy, Jaaferi said.
He said: “I knew Raju because when he started off his career, he was doing small stage shows. At that point I was impressed. He was a simple guy, but his humour was very earthy, very Indian rooted, coming from a small town, but catering to a very wider Indian sensibility. Not only on shows, but wherever he stood among the people, he used to make them laugh.”
Jaaved has been part of several TV shows and movies. He also dubbed animated series like ‘Mickey Mouse’, ‘Goofy’ and ‘Don Karnage’ in Hindi and also hosted award shows like Filmfare and others.
He recalled looking at Raju’s performance in the dance competition series ‘Boogie Woogie’ which was judged by him.

Boasting a vintage 1930s 2D visual style and packed with wacky antics, “The Cuphead Show!” is the latest addition to Netflix’s burgeoning animation slate. The 12-episode series, based on the hugely popular run-and-gun game from Studio Mdhr, follows the adventures of brothers Cuphead and Mugman as they hop out of the frying pan and into the fire only to land on their feet ready for more high-octane escapades.
The reckless and impulsive Cuphead, voiced by Tru Valentino, is tempered somewhat by his cautious and slightly neurotic brother Mugman (Frank Todaro), while Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna) is the patient guardian who ensures order in their snug little cottage on Inkwell Isle. Luke Millington-Drake voices the duo’s nemesis, The Devil, with Wayne Brady pitching in as the voice of the Cab Calloway–styled big band leader King Dice, and Grey Griffin as the noir-inflected Ms. Chalice.

Ready to fill up on Cuphead?
“The Cuphead Show!” (exclamation point theirs) is an animated adaptation of the 2017 video game “Cuphead,” which starred Cuphead and Mugman as they battled their way through increasingly difficult levels and faced off against, amongst other things, the devil himself. Netflix, the streaming service that brought “The Witcher” and “Arcane” to life, has gone to great pains to bring the original game’s old timey animation style to life while maintaining its irreverent humor and oddball tonal shifts (there’s a major emphasis on spookiness).
Dave Wasson, who worked on Disney’s most recent “Mickey Mouse” shorts, developed the property and executive produces the show, and he was able to answer all of our questions about maintaining the feel of a 1930s cartoon in 2022, those three-dimensional backgrounds, and what is next for Cuphead, Mugman, and the rest of the gang.

March marked the 65th anniversary of the wrap of the first season of the “Mickey Mouse Club,” and the recent death of one of the original Mouseketeers, Johnny Crawford, reminded fans of the enduring talent that the show, and especially its early 1990s iteration, brought to the entertainment industry. The original “Mickey Mouse Club” launched the career of Annette Funicello, who occupied a beloved niche in audiences’ hearts for six decades, and the 1990s revival produced Oscar nominees and artists who’ve sold tens of millions of albums and redefined pop music and pop culture. But who are the greatest Mouseketeers? It’s a list ready for debate between boomers and gen Z.

Chris Williams, a former Disney and Maker executive who would later become the co-founder and CEO of next-gen kids’ entertainment goliath Pocket.watch, had a grand vision one day as he began to see kids’ content garnering massive pickup on YouTube.
“I just kept looking at these stars, characters, and IP on YouTube with these massive audiences going, 'Why aren't we treating them like franchises?'" Williams tells Tubefilter in the latest episode of Creator News, our investigative news series. “'Why aren’t we treating them like Mickey Mouse or Star Wars? Why aren’t we treating them like true global kids’ franchises and extending them into all of those areas that we think about when we think about franchises -- like consumer products and games and books and theme park rides?'”

“Sesame Street” was the big winner at Sunday night’s Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony devoted to children’s, lifestyle and animation categories. The long-running series, which now airs on HBO, won three awards, including Outstanding Preschool Children’s Series, and took another three for “Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.”
Songwriter and composer Alan Menken won in the Outstanding Original Song in a Children’s, Young Adult or Animated Program for the song “Waiting in the Wings” from Disney Channel’s “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventures.” Menken previously won eight Oscars for the music for Disney movies, 11 Grammys for his movie music and a Tony for “Newsies” — so the Emmy makes Menken the 16th person to win the Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony grand slam known as the Egot.
Previously, Menken had won a noncompetitive Emmy for his work on the 1990 antidrug special “Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue,” which had put him in a class...

It seems that barely a day goes by without a story concerning the status of Deadpool 3, and that’s largely down to the huge number of variables that concern almost every aspect of the in-development project. Marvel Studios have never had a character like the Merc with a Mouth at their disposal before, and his previous status as the star of two of the three highest-grossing R-rated movies in history under the Fox banner only creates more uncertainty.
Having spent a decade trying to get Deadpool made in the first place, Ryan Reynolds has always played a massively hands-on role in the series as the leading man, producer, co-writer and all-round creative driving force. However, that’s a level of influence that nobody has ever received from Marvel before, with Kevin Feige the one and only person that calls the shots.

It’s been interesting to watch what fans are enjoying on Disney Plus since its launch late last year, and it’s a hardly ever a surprise to see extremely well-known and beloved films top the charts. Various entries in Marvel’s shared cinematic universe have consistently hung out on the list of the 25 most-watched pieces of content on the service, and it’s common to see huge hits like Toy Story 4 and Moana remain there for a long time.
However, one of the platform’s newest additions has been dominating ever since its release and it’s seemingly not ready to give up its spot quite yet. Hamilton quickly grabbed the top spot after its debut on July 3rd and has been holding onto it firmly for over a week now. With so many streaming platforms to choose from and all of them having such exceptional collections of content, deciding which ones to subscribe to can be difficult at times. Sure, Netflix is the most popular, but it’s also now losing a lot of fan-favorite Disney and Marvel movies to Disney’s own fairly new service, Disney Plus.
For big fans of the Mouse House’s content, the platform has rapidly become a no-brainer and July’s offerings have been wonderful so far, with such classics as The Mighty Ducks and The Big Green, the often overlooked Race to Witch Mountain, and a recorded version of the revered musical Hamilton.
Speaking of which, after debuting on Friday, Hamilton has made its way comfortably to the very top of Disney Plus’ trending chart with no signs of giving up its spot anytime too soon. This fantastic performance with the principal cast...

While fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are understandably excited about the prospect of Deadpool suiting up and joining cinema’s biggest and most popular franchise, many of them also have their concerns about how such a unique character could fit into an environment that seems ill-suited for a foul-mouthed, fourth wall-breaking mercenary completely aware of the fact that he’s the star of a comic book movie.
Having carefully built and expanded the McU from the ground up, Kevin Feige expects all of his filmmakers to play by the established narrative rules, and the introduction of someone like Deadpool could potentially present some major obstacles. Either they fully embrace the Merc with a Mouth and deliver their first R-rated movie that defies all of the conventions that we’ve come to expect from the long-running superhero series, or they water it down and sanitize it to the point that...

The new Disney+ is also Disney-, as the studio’s streaming service apparently is being cautious about what it will showcase, keeping some materials in the vault while warning of sensitive content in other cases.
The new subscription service debuted Tuesday and already has caused fans and media to notice what isn’t available. From feature-length films to cartoons, the studio apparently is being very sensitive to problematic materials that could cause upset because of heightened racial and social awareness in the years since initial release.
While it was expected that Disney’s 1946 film Song of the South in any formatnever would be a part of the new service — the film has not been seen for 33 years because of its insensitive racial imagery — there are other film and tv projects that are on the service that are being treated carefully.

A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is on its way to Nickelodeon, called Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they recently announced the cast that will make up the team of ninja turtles.
Ben Schwartz has been cast as Leonardo. I greatly disliked Schwartz’s character Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation, but that’s because he did such a great job, and while I normally wouldn’t like the idea of him being Leo, but it sounds like some changes are being made to the show to make it fresh. Leo is no longer the leader, but rather the cooler, rebellious brother while Raphael (voiced by Omar Miller) takes charge as leader. Donatello (voiced by Silicon Valley's Josh Brener) and still seems to be a techno-geek and Brandon Mychal Smith’s Michelangelo sounds like he’ll be the lovable Mikey we know.
