A technically solid folk-horror film with a menacing Mammootty! [+76%]
arungeorge1315 February 2024
It's been a while since a first-day-first-show experience, ha. Funnily enough, that had to be for a full-length black & white Malayalam film. While the story premise isn't exactly new, the setting and the style of presentation certainly are, at least by Indian film standards. The closest I can think of is the underrated gem Tumbbad, though Bramayugam is steeply rooted in Kerala's folklore. After a ghastly encounter with a malevolent being, a runaway singer (Arjun Ashokan) accidentally takes refuge in a dilapidated mansion during the 17th century in Kerala, where Kodumon Potti (Mammootty) and his caretaker (Siddharth Bharathan) reside. This is the one-liner, but the film is SO MUCH MORE!

Firstly, I want to applaud writer-director Rahul Sadasivan's decision to keep the film in black & white throughout. It not only helps set an eerie tone, but it also makes the experience a lot more fulfilling as we proceed into the final act when key characters go through potentially fatal situations. The script is thankfully in no hurry, and since we mostly see the three characters mentioned above taking up the majority of the screenspace, all of them get a sweet slow-burn build, particularly Mammootty's. One thing to note here is that while it is a horror film by definition, Bramayugam also places equal footing on the genres of mystery and suspense, even when it all unravels at a single location. Shehnad Jalal's cinematography constitutes repeated shots of various spots in and around this particular location - the traditional facade, the messy kitchen, Potti's dining and recreational areas, the overgrown weeds, and some "unexplored" spaces that we know will get covered later on. The aesthetics reminded me heavily of a Robert Eggers film, and art director Jothish Shankar deserves a lot of praise (and probably some accolades).

Christo Xavier comes up with a brilliant sinister score, and the inclusion of a few, well-placed old-school songs takes you back to a bygone era. The equation between the three lead characters keeps changing, and that's where the writer in Rahul Sadasivan plays mind games with us. At first, it gives off the impression of diving into feudalism, and Mammootty is channeling a more blood-curdling version of Bhaskara Patelar (from Vidheyan). But the director keeps reminding us that it's a horror film with frequent flashes of horrifyingly raw imagery, an intimidating score, and Mammootty's creepy laughs. There aren't any forced jumpscares, and the makers rely on the atmospherics and character evolutions to amp up the horror quotient. Editor Shafique Mohammed Ali smartly transitions between slow and fast cuts depending on the tension levels within each scene.

The film's pace dips a little in the second act, but the locales and the overall unpredictability keep you invested. The final act is well executed, with a few shocks and surprises in store. I think this is where the application of a black-and-white tone greatly helped, as there as scenes where you'll find it difficult to distinguish between real locations and artificially created sets. I didn't anticipate these many shots having visual (and practical) effects in the film and the respective departments have done a commendable job. I think it's a bit of a cliché by now, but it's safe to say that Mammootty's attempts at revitalizing the stunning performer in him continue in Bramayugam. He's every bit the vicious presence he's expected to be, right from his introductory shot.

Arjun Ashokan once again plays a naive, servile youngster and is mostly good, though I wish he doesn't get typecast. Siddharth Bharathan is solid, and I guess we'll see more writers and directors utilizing him in various "character roles" in the near future. Bramayugam offers a different kind of theatrical experience, and if you're ready for something unusual in terms of storytelling and presentation, then chances are, you may find it fulfilling too. Also, this is clearly designed for theatrical viewing, and I doubt the levels of enjoyment when experienced on a smaller screen.

Fascinating!

Well, we all know that the another famous actor's fanboys are gonna say negative for this movie. The movie was epic, thrilling. It takes a cynical sense of humour for people to understand most of the parts in the movie line. While on the other side, Ikka's unmatched acting skills makes it more impeccable. The Character is a bit spooky. Even if it's a B&W movie, we won't feel like one. Everybody must give it a try, those who love to experience a suspense music surely give it a try. Theatre experience is a must, those who have Dolby Vision or 4K theatres nearby, should experience the movie, there. Make sure to carry some popcorns.

Mammootty is devilish in this
Jithindurden15 February 2024
Attempting a big-budget black-and-white horror movie in Malayalam itself is laudable. But using it to unleash the devilish side of Mammootty is where this movie really shines. As expected, Mammootty hit it out of the park. In films like this and Rorschach, we can see that the devilish side is used in a way that is so powerful but also charismatic in a way only he can do. We are in awe and horror of the deeds but also can't help but love it. And the director knows this, so the framing and music also evoke the same. Here, the story itself is pretty simple and uses an exposition sequence to fill in all the blanks. So, it's the atmosphere created and the performances that really carries the movie. Thematically there are a lot of obvious aspects to it but it felt like the focus on certain things could have made more impact instead of spelling everything out. Besides Mammootty, Sidharth Bharathan surprised me with his performance. The production design and some detailing in makeup were all fabulously intricate. Editing on the whole felt not as good as all the other technical aspects, as there were many moments where it felt like it disrupted the flow rather than immersing us. The black and white cinematography worked well but I wish they played with it more. Rather than just the usual black and white, the use of some darker black and whiter white etc would've been great, but that's just my opinion. Overall, it's an incredible attempt at folklore horror rooted in Kerala mythology, even though I do think there was some room for improvement.

The fans association people were celebrating with a bandset and everything at the end, so the repetition of a dialogue at the end of the credits wasn't completely audible but that was a really nice way to end the movie.

Another feather in Mammookka's acting career.
shyamkrishsai15 February 2024
An Aithihyamaala style masterpiece!! Had so much of expectation for this movie and it broke that expectation and soared past sky level. It was with awe that I watched Mammooka's performance. Lord of the rings needed VFX but here just the sheer brilliance of Mammookka on his acting made it exemplary. Arjun Ashokans career best performance and Siddharth Bharathans subtly master class acting. The decision to make it into a black and white release was perfect as it added all the desired effect on its dark theme and horror. Every shots were amazing and that inception style rotating room was just kidu. This year looks to be a bright one for Malayalam Cinema.

Exemplary Performance of Mammooka
skmenon199315 February 2024
Bramayugam starring Mammootty in the lead role. Also starring Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharatan

Directed by Rahul Sadasivan.

*** A horror mystery set to convey the evil side of Rulership ***

Set in the period of the 17th Century where black magic, lust for power, control was in extreme, Bramayugam creates a world of the power vests in the hand of the evil & how the helpless society falls prey into this gamble of dominance.

As the whole movie set in Black and White, for me the impression was it was unambiguous of the dominance of the superior over the downtrodden.

Performance wise what we thought was completely different of the characterization of the megastar Mammootty. The thirst for acting has never ended and that's clearly being noticed in each frame of his. The cruelty of the character was very well absorbed by him and that's why he is the Kulapathy of the Malayalam Film Industry.

Another note worthy performance of Arjun Ashokan. The career graph of Arjun will escalate here onwards.. Siddharth Bharatan also gave a fitting performance.

The songs set back in the 17th century was pleasing. BGM added the horror mode.

Overall a purely experimental movie but with the good technical work and class performers Bramayugam sets a new benchmark for the upcoming horror jonor movies in Malayalam Film Industry.

Our version of Dracula
Enigmasuhail15 February 2024
This is our version of dracula and many times better. There has been many movies about the powerful and evil and deceitful chathans but this movie is the best depiction of chathan ever in malayalam movie.

Mammootty is the core if this movie. I feel in the world cinema no one has ever played such a shady evil character and mammootty brings the best out of him. For all those who says age restricts you then mammootty is the exact opposite.

The confidence of the director to make this in monochrome needs to be praised as well. This movie is best in monochrome itself. Today felt very proud to be malayali as I think this best viewed and understood in malayalam.

Visceral & Morbid: Another Haunting Testament To Mammootty's Acting Prowess.
samxxxul16 February 2024
Bramayugam is truly an intense cinematic experience! It's the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits roll. I was riveted to my seat until the very end, captivated by both "The Beginning" and the hypnotic closure, "The Age of Madness." Even now, as I step out of the theater, i still feel like im stuck inside the eerie confines of Bramayugam's secluded mansion buzzing with emotions. It's fantastic to see the public embracing this messed up film.

Only Mammootty can acheive this feat on a godfarsaken mansion (pun not intended), we as an audiece are in company of Kondamon Potti shouldered by the megastar which is a masterclass in controlled chaos. He's joined by his ever-watchful caretaker (Siddharth Bharathan) and a runaway singer (Arjun Ashokan) seeking refuge. Their disparate personalities intertwine beneath the fragile veil of horror, revealing hidden depths and simmering tensions. Also an important decision was give to up on color. Either they wanted to strengthen the effect of isolation, or it helps to throw brownie points for gloomy atmosphere, or it is a tribute to the cinema of the first half of the last century, whether color distracts from what is happening and prevents you from focusing on the most important. There is a feeling that all these points combined led to this style for the successful and a brave attempt in Malayalam industry accentuated with some killer score by Christo Xavier and sound design by Jayadevan Chakkadath.

The film's horror DNA is meticulously woven, drawing upon the chilling atmospheres of classic era of Hollywood, especially the Hammer films, there is some unsettling surrealism of Gaillo, and the contemporary anxieties explored by A24 catalogue. This layered approach creates a hauntingly original experience using the local folklore. Theatricality of action unfolds in the minimum of scenery - the Mansion house, the courtyard territory, blown by all the winds, and, through the tunnel, the sacred path to the bewitching climax.

Megastar Mammookka's current filmogrpahy is really one of his best, if not the best. His frightening laughter, the expression on his face, his level of commitment - this role has no equal, unless of course the 'Devil' himself. He deserves to be in the nomination for every freaking best actor award across the globe. In the finale, Mammoty is so twisted with a battle, illuminated for a more sinister look and the camera statically shows only his face and mouth. In this moment, we as an audience experiences a range of emotions: anger, surprise, a little horror, disgust. All these emotions are visible and caught and this is not done for the sake of aesthetic buffoonery.

Final thoughts, this is no popcorn flick. The film's unhurried pace, akin to a slow burn, might test some viewers patience. But for those willing to surrender to confront the darkness, a powerful payoff awaits as the second half explodes with surreal imagery and shocking revelations.

A Must watch
faisi-8411215 February 2024
One of the epic movies by Mammootty. The great actor Mammootty is like a wine that gets stronger with age. Everyone else, including Arjun Ashoka, has acted well. It can be said that Bharamayugam is definitely a must-watch movie. What sets Mammootty apart from other stars is the way he chooses movies. His finesse in story selection has been evident for some time now. It can be said that the director has made this movie for us in such a way that we even forget that we are watching the movie on a black-and-white screen. Watch this movie with the confidence of not being afraid. Because when the movie is over, others will understand the fear in your eyes.

a one time theater experience
deepudp21 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
When you look at the rating of a movie on Imdb, a site a closely follow to assess the merit of a movie, it is to be determined now that, more often, it is misleading. The minority who bothers to leave their remark on a movie belongs to the biased class or fan base. Everyone is vociferous about Mammootty's performace. It is much like the Surya starer, Jai Bhim. Hardly anyone appreciated the heartwrenching performace of Lijimol. It is all about the fan following of movie stars.

While not taking anything away from the remarkable performance of Mammootty and equally or slightly better performance staged by Arjun and Sidharth, it must be said, the movie is just one time watchable only. Directorial, editing, vfx works are commendable too. Especially the decision to present a black and white movie, in this era is laudable.

The ardent followers of Mammotty would rush to the theatres based on the hype created by social media and uplift the graph further. Agreed, it is a fantasy, but a story must not be illogical or blindly believable or accepted because a star actor is in it. Anyone remembers movies like, Bhoothakalam or Kumari? Outstanding plots and setting but they lack star actors leading them to be forgotten quickly. If you argue, sense cannot be injected in horror fantasy, good audience of Indonesian movies would say, that is why majority their movies just come and go. A good number of their movies are horror movies but lack strong plots. If you take away star value, Bramayugam is a sheer hollow story too!

I would have liked dialogues to be more compelling given the total word count of the dialogues relatively is minimal. The major flow for me was the plot that they say is based on a Kerala folklore. The relevance of lady character? The soldiers who appear from nowhere and vanish? More importantly, the chathan who can see the past and even control nature, cannot foresee two men under his control plotting to kill him nor feel it when the key is stolen from him and is even vulnerable to knife stabs and fire. Interesting.

Nevertheless, appreciate Mammootty's decision to take up such a different role as it has always been. The current era of Mammookka fans should see, his Adharvam (1989).

Bramayugam : age of madness
yasyyy-1047115 February 2024
Pure Madness exceptional masterpiece, offering a slow-burning horror thriller experience that captivates viewers with its black and white visual storytelling. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, this cinematic gem sets a new standard in Malayalam cinema, delivering a quality viewing experience that is truly unforgettable.

Led by the visionary talents of Shehnad Jalal and Christo Xavier in the visual and music departments respectively, the film immerses audiences deeply into its core themes and narrative. Their contributions elevate the storytelling to new heights, creating an atmosphere that is both haunting and mesmerizing.

The stellar performances from the cast further enhance the film's impact. Sidharth Bharathan and Arjun Ashokan deliver standout performances, showcasing their remarkable acting abilities. However, it is Mammootty who steals the show with his unbelievable portrayal. Despite his extensive filmography of over 400 films, Mammootty brings a never before seen character to life with unparalleled skill and intensity. His performance is nothing short of mind-blowing, leaving viewers in awe of his exceptional talent.

Rahul Sadasivan's direction is nothing short of brilliant, demonstrating his mastery of filmmaking and establishing a new benchmark for excellence in Malayalam cinema. "Bramayugam " is a must-watch film that demands to be seen on the big screen. It leaves audiences spellbound and sets a milestone in the annals of Malayalam cinema.

Horror folklore stretched wide; Mamootty and Arjun Ashokan saved it from breaking off.
SAMTHEBESTEST15 March 2024
Bramayugam (2024) : Brief Review -

Horror folklore stretched wide; Mamootty and Arjun Ashokan saved it from breaking off. One can actually argue over the point that Bramayugam is Malayalam cinema's attempt to modify the Bollywood masterpiece Tumbbad. Human greed plays a common part in both, while the rest of the things are totally different except for the theme of the mystical and horror worlds. Bramayugam differs in the source material, storytelling, and the main conflict. The main conflict here is the curse, a powerful character that keeps others in control. After his friend is killed by Yakshi, Thevan runs away and gets shelter in an abandoned mansion owned by Potti. Thevan is attracted by Potti's generosity, but little does he know that he is not what he looks like. There is a devil inside him, and this comfortable shelter is like a prison. Bramayuham is a long film. It feels stretched because it is stuck in one place and has only three characters. The screenplay could have been better, and the editor could have shortened those long scenes of walking, running, sightseeing, and others. It is presented in black-and-white format to add to its dark theme and colour, and it works too. The only problem is that the film lacks chilling, horrifying scenes. There is one or two that maybe scare the hell out of you, but not enough. This longer-than-expected mystery finds its key in the actors. To start with Mammootty, what a legendary actor! At his age, other actors hardly try to act and mostly think about retirement, but this man acts like he has just started. Another powerful performer is Arjun Ashokan, who has done a brilliant job. Imagine standing in front of Mammootty and giving a neck-to-neck performance. He must have been feeling so proud. The third main actor is Sidharth Bharathan, and he has also given a solid performance. Rahul Sadasivan's flick has some incredible scenes, but it isn't flawless, for sure. Nonetheless, a good watch.

RATING - 6.5/10*

Bramayugam. Mammootty proves he is a flabbergasting ogre in performance. Review by M. Siraj

Bramayugam, directed by Rahul Sadasivan, is a brilliant folklore horror thriller that explores power corruption and human greed, and Mammootty's standout performance versatile acting, and script selection make it a must-watch cinematic experience. In the 17th century, Devan (Arjun Asokan) runs away with his friend Kora in the thick forest, at night Kora is dragged away by Yakshi (Witch/Goblin) making him fall into a trap of enchantment as he enters into a nearby dilapidated Mana (mansion) to save his life from it. In the beginning he doesn't know the mansion belongs to Koduman Potti (Mammootty) who trapped him in the supernatural house of cruelty.

Movie is slow paced in the beginning and takes time to set up the plot, later goes fairly engaging with an extraordinary creepy and scary performance of Mammootty. Every scene goes elaborated with visuals and sound effects. The art work is excellent as the Mana (Mansion) and its surroundings are untidy, nature has reclaimed parts of it, with vegetation creeping up the walls and many roof tiles broken as the look itself screams, "visitors not allowed".

Mammootty excels as the role of a Villain in howling horror, as seeing his shadow comes the shudder that comes from seeing the shadow of Dracula, the horror effect he gives with his vision and voice while sitting majestically in a chair distorts the stomach of audience. Ogre

Hats off to Director Rahul Sathasivan for framing the story in Black and White with only 3 characters throughout the film, slowly narrates how Devan escaped from that Mana (Mansion) full of occult and ambiguities to become his prison. Mammootty has brought the character to life with his trademark voice, laughter with stained teeth and sitting posture, as well as the tone of the legend and nerve-wracking intimidating gaze. In some scenes, his voice, even his shadow, makes us convulsion to compensate for his presence. Cinematography is the backbone of the film, shot entirely in black and white, (Hats of the Director's courage) with a single ruined mansion (Mana) palace as the plot. Along with the lighting for black and white, his compact frames go hand in hand, transmitting horror and the supernatural in depth. In fact, every frame and angle of Mammootty replicates the voice of that Koduman potti character. Background music plays a pivotal role in the movie by transmitting to the audience many feelings of mystery, deceit, aggression and fear, vividly through a mixture of folk and Carnatic music giving boundary shots in horror scenes. Director's concentrated collage can be felt not only in the thrill scenes, but also in the scenes that show the mental state of the characters. Director Rahul Sadasivan made an absolutely terrific folklore horror with brilliant metaphorical layers on power corruption and human greed whereas Mammootty proves he is a flabbergasting ogre in performance.

There is a famous Dialogue by Mohan Lal in the Film "Manichitrathazh" as follows:

"Oru mano roga chikilsakanum sanjarichittillatha vazhikalil koodi gnan sanjarichu ennirukkum. (I may travel in any route which other Psychiatrist were not travelled) Oru branthanai pole. (As a mad man) Ente nakulanuvendi. (For my Nakulan) Avante bharyakku vendi. (For his wife) I am going to break all conventional concept of psychiatry".

Here Mammootty breaks all the conventional concept of a Hero. Even after 400 films in his credit, his quest for new roles, passion for acting never ends. Really, he is a mad man who had the courage to travel in different routes which other actors are not dare enough to try. He is least worried about his image, concentrating only for the Character he portrays.

Yes. Mammootty is a Mad Man.

Welcome to Bramayugam!
chand-suhas15 February 2024
A singer on the run, arrives at a mansion and despite the warnings from the cook, he chooses to stay. The mansion belongs to Kodumon Potti and the power he yields, makes the poor singer realize that his stay in that mansion is no longer his will. His attempt to run away is thwarted by the non-stop rain and soon the singer uncovers the truth behind Kodumon Potti and the costly price he has to pay, the longer he stays in that mansion. Will the singer and the cook be able to succeed in defeating Kodumon Potti and escape, forms rest of the story.

Rahul Sadasivan has a solid script and the horror stems from the power dynamics. Special mention to cinematographer Shehnad Jalal for an exceptional work. The first half alone is simply terrific, making this a must watch and Mammootty at the center simply rules the screen. The pace dips once the main reveal about Kodumon Potti happens but the performances keep elevating the scenes and an excellent final act, makes up for the predictable screenplay in second half. Bramayugam scores exceptionally as a horror film.

Absolute trash, fake hype.
CommonViewer17 March 2024
Fake hype with zero jump scares.avoid it at all cost. Horror lovers will find this kindergarten level movie with more laughs and hardly any scare. The story is very predictable, there is hardly any room of twists and turns as the entire movie revolves around 3 characters.

There is no logical explanation of what is happening and why is happening, except the main villian is known from first frame. The yoshi chracter also appears in 2 frames and has no explanation. Keep your minds at home , if you want to watch this trash.

Cons: 1. Predictible story.

2. Zero horror 3. Long and boring 4. Bad climax

Pros: 1. None.

A must watch movie
johncenadx-4216815 February 2024
I went to the theatres as someone who didn't have much expectations in current genre of Malayalam movies and haven't watched a single trailer of this movie and didn't know what to expect when I went over to watch this however as soon as I began watching this movie, I knew this movie is gonna be different. There are too many things to love about this movie and too less to hate it. The cast was phenomenal, the storyline, direction, cinematography, background score, setting etc everything was top notch. I felt the vibe and setting we feel in this movie outclassed most of the best Hollywood movies of similar genre, this is coming from someone who used to binge such movies from Hollywood, Hallyuwood, Yesilcam etc. If you are reading the reviews and are skeptical about it, trust me when I say this, you should definitely go out and watch this movie cause I genuinely don't know when such a movie will ever be released again in Mollywood or even in Hollywood. The black and white setting despite what a few many think is actually the icing on the cake and one of the best aspect of the movie. In short, this is a must theatre watch experience that will be remembered in history.

The age of madness
krshychait18 February 2024
This is Bramayuga! The worsened form of Kaliyuga" thunders the character of Kodumon Potti (Mammootty) in the trailer which was released as a build-up for the monochromatic, horror thriller "Bramayugam". With never before seen look of Mammootty and a rocking musical score, this film raised expectations of being a niche cinema. Has that really happened? Let's find out.

In the 17th century of Malabar region, two renegades are trying to find a way out of the forest. One is Kaara (Manikandan) and the other is Thevan (Arjun Ashokan). The enigma that the forest is, it has its own charms and traps. Out of some dense woods, emerges a Yakshi (Amalda Liz) who seduces Kaara and ultimately kills him. Scared out, Thevan finds a staircase which leads him to an almost in ruins mansion. The owner of the mansion is Kodumon Potti who hears him out and offers shelter to him much to the disappointment of the chef of the mansion (Siddharth Bharatan). Little does Thevan knows that he has walked straight into the lap of Potti who does not let go off his guests easily. As he holds the key for their future and also their fate. Who is this Potti and how did he get the power he wields over the mansion and the lives of the inhabitants and his guests? What is the price does one have to pay to get Potti agree for their own freedom and survival? The answers to these questions are to be found in this layered narrative which gives an ultimate cinematic experience.

Analysis

Analysing a film like "Bramayugam" is a delight and also a challenge for guys like me. Its a delight as many facets of the story come to the fore. Its a challenge as we cannot discuss it in the open as anything revealed might lead to a discussion which may prejudice the future viewers. Still I would try to decode the plot and film without revealing much of the intricacies of the plot.

"Bramayugam" introduces a world which is thrown far away from humanity and a world which is waiting to be discovered. The wanderer, Thevan, discovers Potti's mansion and gets trapped in it. What lies in the mansion? The mansion is a maze with full of chambers holding dozens of secrets. What lies beneath? Audience wants to know the truth. But are we ready to accept the truth?

The plot of "Bramayugam" has a layered narrative set in the society of 17th century when the country is waiting at a great turning point in history. It is set in the period of feudal lords fighting amongst themselves throwing the lives of commoners into uncertainty. Amidst this backdrop director, Rahul Sadasivan tells a fantastical tale of mysticism, existentialism and fate. The three characters inhabiting the mansion represent the structure of the society. Through these characters, the director discusses various issues like caste divide, existence of God, and certainty of Fate and finally about the sway of absolute Power over humankind. "Bramayugam" talks about freedom and survival. There are many more facets to the story which the screenwriters, TG Ramakrishnan and Rahul Sadasivan have peppered in this delightful screenplay which can be understood by the audience. With this kind of subtle messaging the director plays not just on the senses of the audience but also on the subconscious of the audience. The audience is subjected to an experience which justifies the tagline, "The age of madness".

Coming to the performances, Mammootty as Kodumon Potti just hogs all the limelight. Accepting this character and transforming himself as Potti is a major decision which worked in favour of the film. He throws not just his star power into the proceedings, but also his immense talent as powerhouse performer. The glee with which he welcomes the wanderer in to his mansion and the usage of his eyebrow to chilling effect, the various tones of laughter to evoke different emotions mark the command Mammukka holds over his craft. In a way, Mammukka's performance can be showcased in acting schools as a lesson.

Standing tall and matching the great Mammukka are Siddharth Bharatan and Arjun Ashokan. They excel in their roles and add value to the story with their performances. Amalda Liz makes a big impact in her short role with her presence and powerful looks.

As a director, Rahul Sadasivan shows his craft which is of the highest level. He shot this film in Black & White which is a novelty for the viewers of this age. This decision proved to be a right call as it brought in the intrigue and eeriness which the plot demanded. The cinematographer, Shehzad Jalal perfectly captures the soul of the story with his amazing frames and lighting pattern which intrigues the viewer. The background score by Christo Xavier can be called as one of the best works on Indian screen. Added to the score, Sound Design by Jayadevan Chakkadath and Mixing MR Rajakrishnan is of highest quality and is best experienced on a Dolby Atmos set up. Production design by Jotish Shankar adds to the allure of the film.

The producers of this "Bramayugam", Chakravarthy Ramachandra and S. Sashikanth should be thanked for understanding the need for this kind of experimental cinema, trusting the director's vision and backing him up in this risqué production. An exceptional production needs exceptional level of backing which the producers gave completely to the director to fulfil his vision. Bringing in a star like Mammootty is no mean achievement and it speaks so much about the trust of the Producers had on the director.

"Bramayugam" can be classified as a rare breed of cinema which has found critical acclaim as well as commercial success. It has to be watched on a big screen with Dolby Atmos set up to relish.

Highly recommended.

Krishna Chaitanya Rallapalli.

An Indian Cinema
sheikalthaf20 February 2024
When I finished watching this episode it was like watching one of those "A24" movies!. In general, horror films have their directors and writers who want to impose horror elements in us and thereby make business with the feeling of "fear" in us, but even though this film seems like an ordinary film at the beginning, a few scenes can be easily guessed, but as the story progresses, the characters become more and more. Our screen experience is intensified by their mysterious activities and the performances of the actors who played them!

Although there is a business and an audience for "Folk Horror" films worldwide today, something called "look" is necessary for that!. After Rahi Anil Bharve's 2018 film Tumbbad, this film is the first to deal with a fairy tale set in India (the land of stories).

Although there are better films in Tamil language cinema, the reality is that all of them are directed towards film festivals and produced. Today locally produced films are sent to foreign film festivals only because of the "recognition" but today in Malayalam language cinemas such films are sent entirely to theaters, the recognition comes from the wider screen-viewing public!.

Bloody brilliant
alphadude00718 February 2024
After every Indian attempt through a movie or a web series in horror, I always think - our mythology and history is rich with so many interesting horror characters and yet, we have to resort to jump scares and terrible horror tropes to build a story. Tumbad was one movie which really worked for me and gave respect to our rich culture. Here is Bramayugam which is equally amazing using Kerala folklore. I also saw a tinge of dracula in there. What a brilliant and engaging movie. Mammooty was in top form and just unleashes himself on screen. The supporting cast was also very good. Loved the cinematography, art, music, everything infact supported the movie and didn't detract from the viewing experience. So happy to see our culture and traditions explored in such a way. Hope to see more such horror and thriller movies rooted in our history and tradition to come from Malayalam cinema.

A movie sans color, yet reflects current times
kkaravind25 February 2024
Bramayugam tells the story of ancient Kerala, seen through the eyes of a filmmaker of 21st century, educated by western discourse.

For him, Kerala of past is in black and white, sans color. In his eyes, those are times of goblin- where a goblin takes over humans and makes them do his bidding.

In the western discourse afflicted Kerala, woman is looked upon as seducer, that is the only role for sole woman character in this movie- a bewitching witch.

There is no place for Devata in this God's Own Country, other than to gift a goblin who takes over land and minds of people. God has apparently fled the place according to Potti, played by Mammootty.

In certain ways this Kerala in the mind of current film maker resembles the Kerala of today, where god has apparently abandoned the place, to communists who claim themselves to be godless.

The main actor, playing role of a bard or Paanan, looks more like a well built wrestler rather than impoverished paanan. Mammootty as usual, succeeds in overpowering the character of Potti, infested by goblin. In all his many past roles, Mammooty always comes across as if the actor in him has to overpower and subdue characters he play, to establish his supremacy, as if that is sign of success.

Overall, the film is a sign of distance that people of Kerala have travelled away from ancient roots, where those times appear to be in black and white for many, remote; filled with strife and pain.

Will the land of Kerala succeed in shaking of the goblin it is infested with, the Bramayugam it is living in?

an extraordinary cinematic masterpiece
ismaildu20 February 2024
"Bramayugam," starring Mammootty, is an extraordinary cinematic masterpiece that captivates audiences with its compelling narrative and stellar performances. Directed by auteur filmmaker Rahul Sadashivan, known for his previous horror masterpiece "Boothakaalam," the film seamlessly weaves together elements of mythology, drama, and horror, creating an immersive viewing experience. Mammootty's portrayal of the titular character is nothing short of phenomenal, showcasing his versatility as an actor. The film's stunning black and white visuals add to its eerie atmosphere, while the extraordinary performances by Siddarth and Arjun Ashok elevate the overall experience to new heights. The dialogues, written by Malayalam novelist T D Ramakrishnan, are exceptionally powerful, adding depth to the characters and intensifying the suspense. Additionally, the background music is superb, further enhancing the chilling ambiance of the film. "Bramayugam" is not just a movie; it's a cinematic journey that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It's a must-watch for cinephiles and fans of Mammootty alike, especially when experienced in 4K resolution in a theater setting, where the visuals and sound can be fully appreciated.

A disappointing tale
rknairjunior17 February 2024
To begin with, the actors delivered exceptional performances, with Mammootty particularly shining

Up to scratch; The movie presented some politics, though the script was successful, the direction and narration were not up to mark. If the direction and narration had been more engaging, it could have been a worthwhile watch. We know how 'Tumbaad' introduced us to 'Hastar and we remember Stephen Lang in 'Don't Breathe' Even Malayalam films have showcased genre crafts like 'Sree Krishna Parunthu' and 'Adharvam' in the 80s.

So with respect to all the above, Bramayugam failed to make a film geek or made me to watch the genre craft.

Not Worth It
FanOfSuperHeroes19 March 2024
This movie is quite engaging. It makes you think about what's going to happen next. And I guess that's the reason why it is highly rated, only unless you've watched movies better than this. I don't like the action in this film. I don't like the colours. There's only a few action and that also useless, what do I say about action? This movie kept me watch it till the end because I wanted to know the conclusion. However, while I was watching this, I was like, when will this end? Like there are plenty of slow motion scenes, you just have to wait for minutes about where it takes. It was not on to the point in some scenes. Is this movie good or bad? Boring, I would say. I felt bored. I am like, how come this be engaging and boring at the same time? Yes, it is engaging but boring also due to some scenes that waste your time unnecessarily. If it was like a decade ago, I would have enjoyed this, but in this date, I have already watched better movies than this. So, I apologise if I hurt any fans, but this movie is not worth it. Thank you.

Tumbbad? The Lighthouse? Bramayugam!
saqlainali-0643718 March 2024
"This is Bramayugam, the age of madness! A worsened era of the most degenerate age, the Kaliyugam! God's exodus marks the beginning of Bramayugam. No matter how loudly you summon Him, He won't hear you!"

In the folklore of the 17th century, Thevan, a singer hailing from Paanan, finds himself adrift after narrowly escaping a slave market. His journey takes an unforeseen twist when he chance upon a mysterious path while evading a yakshi that abruptly crosses their way in the jungle. This enigmatic path leads him to 'The Mana,' the mansion of Kodumon Potti."

This cinematic masterpiece, a technically brilliant film, brings to mind; Satyajit Ray's The Music Room and Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, where a gripping game of chess unfolds between the knight and Death, symbolizing profound existential struggle. However, in Bramyugam, Thevan and Kodumon Potti engage in a game of Pakida, where 'Time' itself becomes the wager. The film also jogs memory of Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan, yet it predominantly resonates with Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse and another Indian cinematic gem based on mythical folklore, Tumbbad.

Although Bramayugam may evoke thoughts of these films, it is undeniably original and transcends comparison. It's striking cinematography, haunting score, artwork, brilliant acting and direction; coalesce to create an eerie atmosphere within the dilapidated mansion, shrouded in intricate webs. Furthermore, it resonates deeply with pluviophile, capturing their hearts' desires in a unique and compelling manner.
