Yet Another Awful Episode
Wow, another dud SNL.
The cold open with weirdos in the park was all the regular cliches. Bowen Yang looks like he's on a diet, so there's that, I guess.
More body shaming men. Mikey Day dusts off that dopey one-note character where no one can believe he's with a hot woman. Because, you know, why not reinforce ugly stereotypes. Meanwhile, the snide host of the game show they're on is built like one of the M&Ms in the TV commercial, and we're supposed to believe that is better as he rattles off various crude insults. Why not do one next week with a Chippendale dancer and Heidi Gardner, Punkie Johnson, Ego Nwodim, or Molly Kearney. See how much making fun of their lack of hotness is funny.
Then there's a high school language skit. These were kind of funny when Alec Baldwin did them because of the exaggerated accent. This one is not. Mikey Day, who seems to be the show's go-to for constant humiliation, plays a teacher who simply can't keep up when two fluent Spanish speakers are in his class. Never mind that a large part of the skit has to do with regional accents and dialect more than simply Spanish.
The video dunces do another retread, this one about a night at the club where everyone had too much drink. It's more or less like that video they did about the high school reunion where we find out speaker was murdered - the jokes get more and more absurd as the tired skit just keeps going and going.
Weekend Update is low energy again. Maybe it's because both hosts look like they're raiding the refrigerator at night. I mean, they were both kind of pudgy to begin with, but it's more obvious now. Bland Colon is never really funny but the other guy sometimes is. Ugh, Kenan Thompson mugs for what seems like hours. I literally tuned out, did some stuff, came back, and he was still going. And still unfunny.
But Sarah Sherman, the only bright spot tonight, does a fine job creating both a kooky character and pointing out much truth about Colon.
Kearney tries to do a bit for trans rights like Cecily Strong did for abortion, but it's more loud than funny.
The musical guest was sexy though her song was incredibly derivative. Big ups to her for not being afraid to show her cellulite, though.
Just a disappointing. SNL. So far, this has been one of the least funny seasons in a long time.
