A solid movie (first time director, which I'm skeptical of, if you are to believe IMDb), that tells us the story about intrigues and honor within a han in the time of shoguns (this one: 1732), as it plays out it mimics what we see a lot of today; the story behind powerstruggles. The good (one lead) is here being sacrificed for the greater good.
The story about how negative the greater good is and is portrayed as such is one that we get forcefed a lot in these days of fascism, it's natural and it will take time before it turns around. Regarding the movie in itself; it's well produced, storyline is the same old story but when it comes to directing and cinematography it is refreshing and well produced. It does lack slightly in areas of martial arts (swordplay) but not enough to take away much from the overall impression, this is also a strongpoint to a certain degree (it makes it more realistic).
If you like classic Samuraj movies this is a good movie to watch, if not it still is not a waste of time, especially if you are not grown up with the area - it might interest you to look to the genre and that might open up a whole new cinematic world for you.
