Telefilm Canada-backed feature Jude & The Jinn has completed principal photography in Cairo and Toronto, with Alexander Siddig starring for writer-director Rolla Tahir.
Financed by Telefilm’s Talent to Watch programme and the multi-national New Dawn fund, the magic realist tale stars Siddig and newcomer Azza Abbaro in the story of thirty-something Nubian woman Jude, who is stuck in bureaucratic hell after immigrating to Canada. The Academy has announced eligible features in the categories of international feature film, animation, and documentary for the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024.
The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 21, and the nominations announcement is January 23, 2024.
International
Eighty-eight countries or regions have submitted films eligible for consideration in the international feature film category. An international feature film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (more than 40 minutes long) produced outside the US with a predominantly (more than 50%) non-English dialogue track. Namibia is a first-time entrant.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.
“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.
As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.
“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.
That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
“There is a virtuous circle that began in 2018 and has been continuously regenerating. Spain’s talent base already interests international audiences,” says María Valenzuela, Movistar Plus Intl.’s general manager.
But the country’s TV production scene is still cycling through the fruits of the boom: the number of...

One of the nice surprises at the Film by the Sea Festival in Vlissingen was the unexpected warm weather, a nice little hot after-Summer. A less nice surprise was that some of the venues at the festival did not have a properly functioning air-conditioning. When I saw Burkinabé filmmaker Apolline Traoré's Sahel-based drama Sira, this led to an uncomfortable level of immersion for me, as the titular heroine of that film battles to stay alive in a very hostile hot desert. At the start of Sira we follow a caravan travelling through the Sahel desert, on its way to a wedding. Sira, the daughter of the Muslim people's leader is about to marry into a high-ranked family of Christian farmers, a liaison which is frowned...
