In the world of blockbuster entertainment and critical success, no one rivals the mastery of Steven Spielberg. Notwithstanding the technical ingenuity of James Cameron and the interstellar scientific imagination of George Lucas, Spielberg stands – to this day – as the only Hollywood director to spread out his wings across (almost) every genre and master it without leaving any room for doubts.

As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

If we sit back and think about one of the most recognized actors in the world, Tom Hanks is one of the first names that comes to our mind. For 47 years, the actor has proven himself in front of the camera as he has been taking on different roles where he completely disappears into the roles he portrays a plethora of roles in different genres of films.

From a warm and friendly guy to an isolated man to an isolated man striving to survive on a deserted island, Hanks can do it all. As a result, his name alone is enough to attract a huge audience. However, his most popular film was the 1998 film directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, which has now established itself as a legendary classic.

Like many other folks approaching 70, Tom Hanks found himself out of the loop when the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake dominated headlines during the first week of May. So, he reached out to his son and hip-hop enthusiast, Chet Hanks, for an explanation and got a far longer response than he expected — so much so that he apparently didn’t bother reading the reply.
Chet posted the exchange in his Instagram Stories today (May 20th), which began with his father saying, “Big Main, can you explain the Drake/Kendrick Lamar feud to me?”
In response, Chet broke down how Drake and J. Cole had long claimed they were among the “Big 3” of hip-hop alongside Kendrick Lamar, which prompted Kendrick to come after them on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.”
He continued by referring to Drake’s short jokes on “Push Ups” before moving on to the meat of the beef on “euphoria,...

Steven Spielberg’s legacy is a much-renowned one, unmarred by time and the arrival of new talent. His films have established a new era in Hollywood, through Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. Despite the presence of evolved technologies and newer creatives, not many have been able to recreate the scale of Spielberg’s career or overthrow his status as a living legend.

When writer John Orloff took on the task of turning historian Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air” into a series for Apple TV+, one task was paramount: putting the audience in the shoes of the Air Force pilots whose World War II exploits were documented in Miller’s book. “We all know what infantry combat looks like,” Orloff told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “We haven’t really seen what these air bomber combat missions were really like.” Knowing that authenticity, both in terms of historical detail and visceral emotional experience, would be key, Orloff turned to visual effects supervisor Stephen Rosenbaum to bring the era and action to life. Although Rosenbaum is known for his groundbreaking work in the fantasy realm on films like James Cameron’s “Avatar,” for “Masters of the Air,” he adhered strictly to reality.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

It’s been three years since Cary Fukunaga’s most recent film, the 007 feature, “No Time to Die.” Since then, it’s been a bit rough for the filmmaker. He was at the center of sexual misconduct allegations from women in Hollywood. While no legal action was taken, it did mean that when “Masters of the Air” was released, the Apple TV+ war series he directed some episodes of, Fukunaga was not part of the marketing.

Ncuti Gatwa is earning rave reviews for his turn as the 15th iteration of the shapeshifting “Doctor Who.” While enough episodes won’t air on Disney+ in time to make him eligible at this year’s Emmys, he could well contend for his featured role in Apple TV+’s acclaimed limited series “Masters of the Air.” He portrays real-life World War II Air Force officer Robert Daniels and is being submitted in Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor.
That could put him in competition against Christopher Eccleston, who played the ninth Doctor (the first 21st century version of the character) in 2005. Having won an International Emmy for the British anthology series “Accused” (2011), Eccleston is now seeking a primetime bid for his work as Alaska police captain Ted Connelly on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.”
Peter Capaldi, who played the 12th Doctor from 2014 to 2017, headlines the new Apple TV+ series “Criminal Record.

Diversity and representation are vital in the entertainment industry. So when the Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa was cast as the fifteenth Doctor in Russell T Davies’ fourteenth series, Doctor Who, it should have been a cause for celebration. Sadly, instead of being met with open arms, he has faced a barrage of racist and homophobic backlash from online trolls.
In case you missed it, Gatwa’s casting in Doctor Who signifies the first queer actor portraying the Time Lord. Regretfully, certain bold casting choices will inevitably give rise to hatemongers, as was the case with the Masters of the Air actor.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races, now with “Baby Reindeer” in the mix.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the limited series race, which remains fairly top-heavy despite what the odds might suggest. To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). You were the earliest adopter of the Netflix juggernaut, which made landfall in Los Angeles this week for a splashy FYC event. The show feels assured of several top nominations,...

Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Roy Lee and Steven Schneider’s genre label Spooky Pictures have set the third feature under their multi-picture slate deal with sci-fi horror Menace. Directed by Randall Okita (See For Me), the film stars Isabel May (1883) who also serves as an executive producer via her banner Una Vaca Productions.
AGC International will launch sales at the Cannes Market and show off first footage from the movie which recently wrapped production in Canada. Cinetic Media is handling North American rights.
May stars as a research student who has a psychotic breakdown and is remanded to the custody of her aunt and uncle in a small town. When strange things start happening around her and people start disappearing, she isn’t sure what is real or what is her imagination.
May was most recently seen in 1883 for Paramount+ and the Apple TV series, Masters of the Air.

One of the best recent rule changes the Television Academy recently made was the 2020 decision to expand the Drama and Comedy series categories to include eight nominees, regardless of the number of entries. But if the goal of the Primetime Emmys is to be reflective of the shows that most engaged viewers and voters alike throughout the TV season, it needs to now go one step further. The TV Academy needs to expand the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category to eight nominees as well.
In the decade since they have re-split the Limited Series and TV Movie categories there have been plenty of winners that were a cultural moment, from “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” to “Big Little Lies” to “Watchmen,” but these event series were not as common an occurrence. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, an event that has had ramifications to the television schedule still present today.

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

New four-part historical murder-mystery Shardlake is adapted from Dissolution, the first novel in Cj Sansom’s seven-book crime series about 16th century lawyer/investigator Matthew Shardlake. Dissolution sees Shardlake sent by religious reformer Thomas Cromwell to investigate a killing at an English monastery.
In the novel, Shardlake is accompanied to the monastery by his young assistant Mark Poer, the son of his father’s farm steward. As a teenager, Mark came to live with Shardlake, who secured him junior legal clerk positions in the London courts.
In the TV adaptation, written by The Last Kingdom and Baghdad Central’s Stephen Butchard, there is no Mark Poer. His character has been cut entirely and replaced by that of Jack Barak, played by Masters of the Air and Ordeal by Innocence’s Anthony Boyle. Jack, a henchman of Thomas Cromwell’s with an eye for the ladies, is a returning character first...

Out of battery. Out of signal. Stamped underfoot. Dropped into drains. Crime writers have found inventive ways to remove suspense-killing mobile phones from their stories, but no solution is as thorough as Cj Sansom’s. By setting his murder mysteries in Tudor times, Sansom’s 16th century lawyer Matthew Shardlake has to investigate without mobiles, forensics or DNA databases, armed with only his mind and principles. Or rather: his mind, principles, and the fearful reputation of his boss Thomas Cromwell whose name Shardlake draws “like a sword”.
This four-part historical crime drama is adapted from the first of Sansom’s seven Shardlake novels by Stephen Butchard, the writer who so successfully translated Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories to the screen in The Last Kingdom. If it lands well with an audience, there’s hope of many more series, each one a self-contained mystery for ‘the Tudor Morse’ to solve against...

Hours before its final episode aired on Tuesday, April 23, FX’s “Shōgun” officially became Gold Derby’s predicted 2024 Best Limited Series Emmy winner, replacing the same network’s “Fargo.” This development has been brewing since late March, when our editors broke from the crowd by collectively making “Shōgun” their top choice in the category. Now, they are leading the charge for a fresh contender that is already threatening the new frontrunner’s path to victory.
Less than three weeks after its full series premiere, Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” stands as one of the streamer’s most popular 2024 programs with over 150 million global viewing hours and counting. Since being added to our predictions center last Monday, the buzzy, seven-part show has shot up in the main limited series race, surpassing Netflix’s “Ripley” and ultimately bumping Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air” out of the forecasted lineup derived from the predictions of 2,000+ Gold Derby users.

Getting ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor? Be sure to scroll through our photo gallery showcasing the men who are most likely to land in the lineup. Out in front is “Fargo” star and former drama lead winner Jon Hamm, who could also pick up dual supporting bids this year for the comedy and drama series “Good Omens” and “The Morning Show.”
Hamm would be the first actor to win this award for “Fargo,” following the unsuccessful bids of inaugural season cast members Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton and third season lead Ewan McGregor. As the star of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” McGregor happens to be seeking a second win in this category after being honored for “Halston” in 2021.
Others vying for bookend trophies here are Michael Douglas (“Franklin”; formerly of “Behind the Candelabra”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“Eric”; “Sherlock”). Also in the mix is Tony Shalhoub,...

Doctor Who is one of the most successful timeless tales. Despite existing for almost two decades, it still has no intention of slowing down anytime soon, with the next doctor in the saga being Ncuti Gatwa. But times are changing, and the casting of Gatwa as the core doctor marks a significant milestone for the franchise because the actor is the first openly queer Black actor to take on the role.
The Doctor Who saga.
However, instead of letting it stay as a milestone for the saga, the Rwandan-Scottish actor has been caught making one too many controversial statements regarding “racism,” which have unarguably enraged even the viewers and die-hard fans of the franchise. In fact, the most recent comment from Gatwa is a bit too contentious, and could just end up coming back to haunt the show later on.

Said to be a mix of Top Gun and Back To The Future, T-Minus will be an expensive-sounding action thriller based on a Philip K Dick short story. Michael B Jordan will co-produce.
Michael B Jordan, who’s currently working with Ryan Coogler on his currently untitled horror movie, now has another major project in the works. Called T-Minus, it’ll be produced by Jordan through his company, Outlier Society, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
The script will be co-written by Drew Pearce, who wrote the upcoming The Fall Guy, and Nick Cuse, writer of TV’s Watchmen and Masters Of The Air.
What’s really intriguing about T-Minus – for this writer at least – is that it’s based on a Philip K Dick short story, A Little Something For Us Tempunauts.
First published in 1974, it’s about three time travellers (the Tempunauts of the title) whose mission to...

Exclusive: Outlier Society is developing the Amazon MGM Studios action thriller movie, T-Minus, which is being co-scripted by Fall Guy‘s Drew Pearce and Watchmen and Station Eleven scribe Nick Cuse.
Outlier Society’s Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo will produce with Pearce who is producing via his Point of No Return Films and Isa Dick Hackett via Electric Shepherd Productions.

The project was initially developed by Pearce’s banner Point of No Return Films. Outlier Society’s Elizabeth Raposo heard the pitch—said to be an action-thriller along the lines of “Top Gun meets Back to the Future, with a Philip K. While plot details are being kept under wraps, T-Minus will be adapted from the Philip K. Dick sci-fi 1974 short story A Little Something for Us Tempunauts.

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.

Having spent years in development limbo as films were announced only to vanish back into the ether, we are finally getting a screen version of William Gibson's iconic cyberpunk tome Neuromancer via a series in the works at Apple TV+. And the show's creative team is plucking an Apple TV veteran to star, as Masters Of The Air's Callum Turner is aboard in the lead role.
Gibson's book, which was first published in 1984, went on to receive a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. Gibson crafted two follow-ups, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, which means there's material for future seasons if needed, or a potential anthology series. Graham Roland...

Amblin’s film adaptation of Richard Osman’s novel “The Thursday Murder Club” is finally taking shape, with “Harry Potter” and “Home Alone” filmmaker Chris Columbus set to direct.
Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley are being eyed for three of the four lead roles in the project.
The book, released in 2020, tells the story of four septuagenarian friends who live in a retirement community and solve cold cases for fun. When a shady property developer is found dead, the four find themselves in the middle of their first live crime.
Publishing rights for the book were sold in the biggest debut novel deal for a decade. Amblin Partners scored worldwide rights to the film after a competitive auction that attracted interest from 14 studios.

As of now, the frontrunner is the FX anthology “Fargo,” which is seeking the honor for its fifth iteration after winning for its first in 2014. It was also recognized here in 2016 and 2017.
FX has indeed produced several serious Best Limited Series candidates this year, including “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” “A Murder at the End of the World,” and “Shōgun.” Its most recent victories came for the first two seasons of “American Crime Story” (2016; 2018).
