Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic job with the 2024 Oscars opening monologue, touching briefly on politics but mostly focusing the jokes around this year’s nominees. Kimmel called out Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, this year’s Oppenheimer nomination being a new “high” in Robert Downey Jr’s career, and compared Emma Stone playing an adult woman with the brain of a child to the woman who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union address. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

‘Camomile Lawn’ Novelist’s Estate Snapped Up By Ilp
International Literary Properties has acquired the estate of British The Camomile Lawn novelist Mary Wesley. Channel 4’s adaptation of The Camomile Lawn is Channel 4’s second most successful drama series of all time, according to Ilp, and the deal will see Ilp manage the rights to Wesley’s work. Having famously published her first novel aged 70, she also wrote the likes of Jumping the Queue, Harnessing Peacocks and The Vacillations of Poppy Carew, all of which have previously been adapted for film and TV. “Mary was an incredible woman, an extraordinary author and a very close member of my family,” said Wesley’s daughter in law, the author Xinran Xue. Deadline revealed last year that Ilp, which holds rights to the literary estates of Langston Hughes and Evelyn Waugh, had headed on a West Coast charm offensive and snapped up the estate of Somerset Maugham.

Oscar-nominated Irish actor Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, Michael Collins, Greta) will be honored with the Irish Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement for his “outstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry,” the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) unveiled on Wednesday.
Rea will be presented with the honor in the presence of family, friends and industry colleagues at the 21st IFTA Awards ceremony, taking place on Saturday, April 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre. The evening will be hosted by Baz Ashmawy, one of Ireland’s most popular TV personalities.

We’ve spent February discussing Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), and Pedro Almodóvar’s controversial 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In (listen). Now we’re wrapping up the month with Neil Jordan’s wacky May/December stalker film, Greta (2018).
In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a new to New York girl who befriends an older woman, Greta (Isabelle Huppert) after returning her lost purse. While the pair strike up an unlikely friendship, Frances’ roommate Erica (Maika Monroe) finds the relationship unusual.
What Frances doesn’t know is that Greta is more than a sad, lonely old woman. She’s got secrets in a trunk, a syringe full of sedatives, and a penchant for burying her secrets, including private investigator Stephen Rea, in the basement.
Will Frances wind up like all of Greta’s other girls?...

After kicking off February with discussions of Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen) and the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), we’re delving into the twisted mind of Pedro Almodóvar with his 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In.
In The Skin I Live In, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has tried to develop a new super skin ever since his beloved wife was horribly burned in a car accident 12 years prior. Finally, Ledgard has created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), a woman he keeps prisoner against her will in the basement of his Spanish mansion.
Being an Almodóvar film, there’s much more to this twisted plot than meets they eye.

Marvel Studios is back with its first new movie since “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and, should the release schedule hold, its last new movie until the third “Deadpool,” which doesn’t come out until next July.
This being a Marvel movie, there are characters old and new to keep track of, as our heroes jet across the galaxy in an attempt to thwart a massive threat to our world and countless others.
Here’s a complete cast and character guide for “The Marvels.” The only folks we have left out are the ones you definitely don’t want spoiled.
Marvel Studios Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is a former test pilot turned superhero, whose origins were traced in “Captain Marvel” and who was last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” lending a hand in what is now canonically referred to as the Battle of Earth.

David Robert Mitchell and Maika Monroe are reuniting on “They Follow,” a sequel to the 2014 cult horror hit, “It Follows.” Neon, the Oscar-winning studio behind “Parasite,” will co-produce the movie and release it domestically. The studio will introduce it to international buyers at this year’s American Film Market. Principal photography is set for 2024.
Mitchell returns as both writer and director for the sequel. Monroe will reprise her lead role of Jay Height from “It Follows.” The sequel reunites the filmmaking team with Neon CEO Tom Quinn. Ever since her 1959 release, Barbie has taken the world by storm. Her brand has adapted over the years to fit the trends of the current time period. Being around for so many decades has allowed Barbie to make a name for herself and build an exciting franchise. She’s even gotten her own movies and shows in the past, but nothing as big as Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’. Audiences are captivated by the movie, and couldn’t wait for the July release. From dolls to movies, Barbie’s made quite the empire for herself. Who knew that one little toy would go on to change the world. Barbie went against the grain of baby dolls by providing girls with the doll of a woman. Instead of girls mothering a toy baby, they were able to live vicariously through a doll of a woman. In the smash hit “Barbie,” Margot Robbie leaves her pink plastic town of Barbie Land to travel to the real world. But can fans of the movie travel to Barbie Land? Kind of.
“Cosmos” host Neil deGrasse Tyson analyzed the position of the sun and moon in the Greta Gerwig film, and the presence of palm trees, and concluded that the fictional town must be “somewhere in the Florida Keys.”
“In ‘Barbie,’ the Moon’s orientation places Barbie World between 20 & 40 deg North Latitude on Earth. Palm trees further constrain latitude between 20 & 30 deg. The Sun & Moon rose & set over the ocean. If it’s in the US, Barbie World lands somewhere in the Florida Keys,” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

“Women… They have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts,” said Saoirse Ronan’s Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s dazzling Louisa May Alcott adaptation. “And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. And I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it!”
Who knows if writer-director Gerwig was already thinking of making a Barbie doll movie someday when she plucked the above quote out of Alcott’s novel, “Rose in Bloom,” and ingeniously plugged it into her inventive take on “Little Women,” concluding it with the punchline, “But I’m so lonely.”
Still, it’s pretty safe to assume she’s been carrying these words around with her when working on her disarming, astute and altogether bitingly brilliant “Barbie,” a thoughtful and uproarious film whose...

Greta Van Fleet’s Josh Kiszka has come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in a new Instagram post.
Noting that those close to him were “well aware” of his identity, the singer explained that he chose to come out publicly in light of a surge in repressive, anti-lgbtq+ legislation in his current home state of Tennessee.
“It’s imperative that I speak my truth for not only myself, but in hopes to change hearts, minds, and laws in Tennessee and beyond,” Kizka wrote, especially because he’s been in “a loving, same-sex relationship with my partner for the past 8 years.”
A recent bill — deemed unconditional by a federal judge — attempted to ban drag shows from public property or anywhere that minors might be present, implying that said performances would be dangerous to children. Another bill, signed into law in March, bans gender-affirming healthcare for children. Kiszka pointed...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan is on the shortlist to play Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.
According to sources, Brosnahan delivered an “outstanding” audition for the spunky Daily Planet reporter but may be in the older range for what Gunn is hoping to achieve with his vision for the Man of Steel — one that focuses on Metropolis heroics with 20-something characters.
Nonetheless, the Emmy-winning actress would love the opportunity to play the iconic comic book character that has been portrayed by actresses like Amy Adams, Erica Durance, Kate Bosworth, Elizabeth Tulloch and Margot Kidder, among others.
“I mean, look, take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt is my first piece of advice,” Brosnahan joked on The View when asked about the story THR broke that says she is on a shortlist for the character. “Look,...

Emma Watson is opening up about why she stepped away from acting.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Watson reflected on why she hasn’t made a movie since Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, which finished shooting at the end of 2018.
“I wasn’t very happy, if I’m being honest, I think I felt a bit caged,” she said.
“The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process,” she explained.

In a recent appearance on the Off Menu podcast with Ed Gamble and James Acaster, the actress said that every day on set was different.
“Each day the content would be getting more weird and harder to do,” she told the co-hosts. “I was putting things in my head that were getting worse and more bleak. I think by the end I probably, most definitely abused my own self in order to get that performance.”

Neil Jordan's new detective movie "Marlowe," starring Liam Neeson, is the director's first since "Greta" in 2018. Jordan may be one of the moodiest filmmakers working, and the smoky mysteries of film noir seem especially suited to his skills. "Marlowe" does indeed feature the famous P.I. created by Raymond Chandler in his 1939 novel "The Big Sleep," but it is not based on any of Chandler's works. Instead, the screenplay, by William Monahan ("The Departed") is based on a spinoff Marlowe novel called "The Black-Eyed Blonde" by John Banville. True to the genre, "Marlowe" is about the eponymous detective's search for the ex-lover of a rich heiress (Diane Kruger). A notable piece of trivia: "Marlowe" constitutes Neeson's 100th official screen credit.
As of this writing, "Marlowe" is not enjoying the best reviews (it currently has a 23 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but fans of film noir would do well to...

After making the poorly received Dracula 3D (watch it Here), legendary filmmaker Dario Argento went ten years without directing another movie. Now he’s back with Dark Glasses, which will be available to watch on the Shudder streaming service sometime this fall (you can read our own Tyler Nichols’ review of Dark Glasses at This Link) – and he has already lined up his next project. While at Frightfest back in August, Argento said his next film will be shot in Paris and is a remake of a Mexican thriller that was released in the 1940s. Now, ChaosReign.fr reports that Argento talked some more about his next project at the Sitges Film Festival, revealing that filming will begin in the spring of 2023… and Isabelle Huppert has signed on to star in the movie!

Dario Argento has been shocking audiences for five decades now and the 82-year-old director isn't stopping anytime soon. He has a new horror film under his belt right now called "Dark Glasses" and while at the acclaimed Sitges Film Festival the Italian director announced he has his next film lined up already that will start production in spring 2023.
Details are slim, of course, but he did reveal two very interesting tidbits: one, the film will be set in Paris, and two, the great Isabelle Huppert will star. Huppert is an award-winning actress that you'll know from films like "I Heart Huckabees," "Greta," and "Elle," which was her big awards movie in 2016.
Argento took a break from directing throughout most of the 2010s, his last film before "Dark Glasses" was 2012's "Dracula 3D," which wasn't exactly a high water mark for this iconic director. "Dark Glasses" looks to be returning the maestro to his "giallo" roots,...

Forty-four years have passed since a feature film was last built around Raymond Chander’s harder-than-hardboiled fictional detective Philip Marlowe — a screen absence that seems both unduly long and now, in the wake of Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” not quite long enough. A phony, flimsy attempt at vintage noir, the film is adapted not from a Chandler work but “The Black-Eyed Blonde,” an authorized Marlowe entry from 2014, by Irish novelist John Banville. Minus Banville’s own knack for literary ventriloquism, however, this all too evidently European co-production can’t help but feel multiple degrees removed from the real thing, not helped by the shuffling, ungainly presence of a wildly miscast Liam Neeson in shoes once filled by Bogart and Mitchum.
Following a low-key premiere as the closing film at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, “Marlowe” will be released Stateside by Open Road Films on December 2 — though even with the big-name cachet of Jordan,...

We're still a year away from finally getting to live our plastic fantasies with Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie starring Margot Robbie ... and everyone else in Hollywood. But we've not been able to shut up about our excitement. The world's favorite fashion doll has been around for over six decades, but this will be Barbara Millicent Roberts' first live-action appearance outside of parody videos and variety show sketches.
Gerwig, Robbie, and the rest of the "Barbie" creative team have kept their lips painted on in terms of the film's plot, but we do know that the majority of the star-studded cast will be playing the many different styles of Barbie and Ken, allowing for endless storytelling opportunities. It seemed like Gerwig nabbed just about every who's who in the industry, but noticeably absent was the star of her first two features "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," the brilliant Saoirse Ronan.

The first feature to open both the Venice and New York Film Festival, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the Don DeLillo masterwork White Noise arrives with much anticipation. With Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig leading, as well as featuring a score by Danny Elfman, here’s hoping Baumbach’s first adaptation will properly translate all the darkly funny, existential dread from DeLillo’s story, wherein a family experiences a toxic cloud hanging over their every move––indeed both literally and metaphorically.
Ahead of its premiere and subsequent Netflix release, the first teaser trailer has now arrived for the film also starring Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, André Benjamin, Alessandro Nivola, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lars Eidinger.
“I read Don DeLillo’s novel in college in the late 1980s, and it felt like now, or the now of then,” Baumbach said in his Venice director’s statement. “It captured perfectly the absurdity, horror...

When is a dress not just a dress? When it’s a dream. When it’s a taste of a better life that is likely the only taste you’ll ever have.
Based on a novel that’s more than 60 years old, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris couldn’t feel more fresh in its knowing clashes between the hoi polloi and those who presume to be their betters. Lesley Manville is Ada Harris, a just-about-scraping-by war widow and housekeeper/cleaner in 1957 London, whose chance encounter with a bespoke Christian Dior gown in the bedroom of one of her rich-bitch employers sends her on an odyssey of longing that she is determined to fulfill, no matter how preposterous this is for her financially, and no matter what barriers her supposed superiors will throw up at her.
Manville is an absolute treasure, as always, perhaps never more so here as when she espies,...

Maika Monroe first broke out as a horror icon in 2014's "It Follows," which she followed up with turns in "The Guest," "Tau," and "Greta." Earlier this year, she cemented her scary-movie dominance with Chloe Okuno's "Watcher," which premiered at Sundance and was released this summer. So Popsugar wants to know: how's it feel to earn the scream-queen title?
"It's kind of crazy, honestly," Monroe tells Popsugar. "I try not to think about it too much, you know? I'm just trying to work on projects that mean something to me and I think that people will enjoy."

From indie gems like “It Follows” and “The Guest” to the sci-fi chiller “Tau,” the pitch-black “Villains,” or the uproarious “Greta,” Maika Monroe has become our modern-day scream queen. However, her true obsession is working with exciting new filmmakers — who, more often than not, just so happen to make brilliant horror movies.
“It’s a conversation that I’ve had with my team, just to be on the lookout for up-and-coming filmmakers that are making interesting and different stuff,” Monroe said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “We all are trying to be up on the short films that come out of film festivals and the smaller movies. I try and pay attention to that as much as possible. It’s part of my job.”
