- Jess makes a real connection with a student in her writing class. She reads the papers to her roommates and Nick thinks the guy is a psychotic killer. Winston and Schmidt argue about what others say about them behind their back.
- Cece is staying at the loft because her shower is broken. Jess comes in, triumphant over a breakthrough with a student, which she chooses to celebrate with pantomime and bad dance. Schmidt demands payment in the new "annoyance bowl."
She told the class to write anything, just load it up with descriptive words and she thinks a guy named Edgar nailed it.
Winston comes into the kitchen in his boxer shorts. He brushes by Cece, who is still in her robe, and his man parts accidentally bump right into her. They have an awkward moment and then everyone else tries to get out of the way of Winston's swinging bits.
Later, Nick reads from Edgar's writing, about how he's a stalker by night who follows a deer and loves stabbing and stabbing and stabbing.
Nick doesn't think it's safe for Jess to be around Edgar and decides to investigate. He begins by Googling.
Winston tries to talk to Schmidt about bumping into Cece, but Schmidt says it's not a big deal that he "pogo'd" her. Winston is horrified to learn they have a verb for what he did, which Schmidt says he's done to everyone in the loft at some point.
"Your penis accidentally changed the channel when we were watching the Bears game once," Schmidt says. Winston turns it on him, saying that Schmidt pogo's people all the time.
In Jess' class, Nick joins as "Julius Pepperwood," wearing a baseball hat and using a really bad Chicago accent. Edgar comes to class late and Nick sits next to him. He sees that Edgar is drawing a picture of a deer with a knife in it and blood pouring out.
After class, Nick tries to grab a note out of Edgar's back pocket and steals his notebook. Jess invites Edgar to office hours.
Back at the loft, Schmidt thinks he's figured out what his "pogo" is. He guesses: that he dances like a sea snake, barges into people's showers or has caterpillar eyebrows. He reveals his newly shaved half-brows.
Nick shows Jess the pages of Edgar's notebook, with drawings of various things dripping with blood. He plans to go to Edgar's house and look for more evidence. Jess insists on going to bail him out after he gets arrested.
Schmidt won't let Winston alone, demanding to know what his "pogo" is, but Winston says it's worse knowing. When Cece asks, Winston tells her it's the thing your friends talk about when you leave the room.
"Oh, like your barnacle toenails?" Cece says to Schmidt. Winston says his feet look like a Swiss Army knife.
Jess and Nick sit outside Edgar's house. He insists they need a safe word, like "apricot".
They sneak up to the house, arguing the whole way, when they see Edgar's mom bring out the trash. They hide in the backyard when Edgar pulls up in his plumbing van. They watch as he pulls a black duffel bag out of this truck and into the garage.
Nick tries to look in the garage, but Jess's "I'm So Excited" ringtone starts playing. They run.
Back at the loft, Jess and Nick come home to Schmidt's half-brows and Winston working on his toenails with a knife. Schmidt knows they call them "clickety clacks" or "centaur boots."
Suddenly, Jess wants to know hers. So does Cece, but they tell her it's a loft thing. Jess pesters them so they tell her: she's a know-it-all.
Nick doesn't feel the need to know his, but they're worried about him. Schmidt crumbles vitamins and puts them on Nick's food and they take turns putting money in Nick's pants pockets before he puts them in the dryer.
Nick goes back to Edgar's garage and tries to look in. When standing on a rolling giant tire doesn't work, he tries a ladder. He sees drawings of the stabbed deer and a lot of drawings of Jess, including some of her with antlers.
He calls Jess and tells her that Edgar wants to kill her. "You're the deer in his story! Get out now!"
She's at school for office hours and plans to use the safe word if she has any issues. Edgar walks in and she starts shouting "apricots!"
She explains she has a deaf grocer.
Nick drops his phone into the garage and falls in after it.
In class, Edgar explains he's come up with a surprising resolution to his story, which now stars her. She has to die. Jess tries to convince him to be unsurprising.
Her phone rings again and Edgar recognizes her ringtone and runs out.
From inside the garage, Nick is relieved she's safe. But then Edgar's mom whacks him on the head and knocks him out.
Nick wakes up with Edgar and his mother standing over him. Jess barges in and jumps on Edgar, so his mom maces her. Jess flails around Edgar's garage, knocking things over.
Cut to later, everyone having a laugh that Jess thought Edgar was a murderer. Jess was just going to be a character in his graphic novel but -- they won't answer any questions about the duffel bag.
Jess tells Edgar's mom she should be proud her son is a great writer. Except she's not his mom. They smooch. She goes to get the duffel bag and meet him inside.
Back at the loft, Nick adds butter to his frying bacon. He doesn't want it to stick to the pan.
Jess sees Nick is working on a new novel about Julius Pepperwood, zombie detective. He has a friend, "his Gal Friday, Jessica Night."
Winston joins them in his boxer shorts and Schmidt comes out to see what's cooking. Nick didn't hear him coming without his toenails. Nick's bacon bursts into flames, but Jess doesn't say anything as they try to douse the fire with water -- she doesn't want to be a know-it-all.
Winston tosses his robe on the burning pan. Nick congratulates him for putting out the fire by hugging him, running into Winston's pogo again.
As Winston runs for cover in his room, they discover his other pogo: farting when he runs.
