A surprise trailer was dropped during Super Bowl LII on 4 February 2018, advertising the movie's final title and its release on Netflix. The release occurred immediately after the game, with the film drawing in five million viewers in its first seven days.
Before the movie's release, it was confirmed to be the third installment of producer J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield series. However, at first it was an original film called "God Particle," in which, during a war against Russia, a group of American astronauts find themselves at stake when they discover that Earth has disappeared and that a Russian ship is trying to make contact with them. Matt Reeves, who directed the first Cloverfield movie and produced the second, was not involved with the film. The ones where Reeves was involved received fresh scores on Rotten Tomatoes, while Cloverfield Paradox received negative scores. There's some debate among fans and critics about whether the version of the film that wasn't related to the Cloverfield movies would had been received better.
Although a world-renowned actress and a big star in China, Ziyi Zhang hardly speaks English. That is the reason her character Tam only speaks Mandarin.
Although this movie takes place in 2028, and the prior films in the Cloverfield franchise took place much earlier, producer J.J. Abrams said in an interview that he has a plan on how all the Cloverfield movies (and future ones) will be tied together.
