Ang Lee is moving on from 3D filmmaking after a trio of hit or miss releases: “Life of Pi” (2012), “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” (2016) and “Gemini Man” (2019). The former title was an acclaimed blockbuster that won Lee the Oscar for best director, while the latter two releases, also distributing in high-frame rate at 120 frames per second, were mostly critical misfires and big financial disappointments. Lee hasn’t made a movie since “Gemini Man.”
“I tried higher frame rate and I tried 3D,” Lee recently told IndieWire. “I tried new ways of making movies. Those pictures are really sharp. That’s a lot of pressure. Everything is difficult, so that is always a great pressure. I cannot get into detail on how to make those movies. People have not tried even one minute of that scale. I did two feature films. That’s great pressure. Of course, that brought in economic pressure,...

More than just a dramatist and storyteller, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain”) is an innovator in the vein of James Cameron and has always been quick to test new filmmaking technologies. Lee has been eager to experiment with early motion capture technologies, as he did the mo-cap himself for his movie “The Hulk” and the exceptional 3D and CGI used in his acclaimed “Life of Pi.” More recently, the filmmaker embraced things like 3D and high frame rates in his films “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” However, in a recent interview with IndieWire, the director said he’s soured on the technologies and won’t return to them anytime soon, specifically 3D.

Ang Lee broke ground on films like “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” developing new camera systems to experiment with de-aging and high-frame rates in 3D. But as the old adage goes, you’re only as good as your last picture, and in the case of the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” director, he hasn’t released a new movie since 2019’s “Gemini Man” bombed at the box office. As did “Billy Lynn,” a movie that could only be shown properly in a small handful of screens, before it underperformed in 2016.

Some good news, ladies and gents – it appears as though the long-shelved big-screen adaption of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) won’t be deleted after all. Variety just broke the news that New Line and Warner Bros will put the movie out on its Max streaming service this year. While this was widely anticipated, in recent months, the buzz had turned pretty dark, with it heavily rumored that WB would be taking a loss on the film and deleting it, which is what they did with Batgirl. The Looney Tunes/live-action mash-up Coyote vs Acme seems to be going that way as well (unless John Cena’s comic performance at the Oscar swayed anyone).
This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set...

It’s been well over a year since Warner Bros. removed the Salem’s Lot remake from its schedule, leaving fans wondering just when the movie will get released. According to Variety, the studio is considering releasing Salem’s Lot on Max rather than in theaters.
Variety’s report reads: “A source with knowledge of the back-and-forth says the move is not a reflection of the film’s quality but is due to the fact that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has created a growing need for Max content. ‘Salem’s Lot’ is one of a few Warner Bros. films deemed to make the jump.” In response, a Warner Bros. spokesperson said, “No Decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans.” If the studio really does decide to release Salem’s Lot on Max, I can only hope that it might see a theatrical release as well; it’s...

Taylor Swift's "Reputation," released in 2017, is kind of two albums put together. On one half of the album, she takes swipes at people who betrayed her and proves, as she sings on "Look What You Made Me Do," that the "old Taylor" is "dead." On the other half, Swift sings about her early days of love with then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn (the pair split earlier in 2023). One of the songs in the second, romantic half is titled "Dress," and it's one of Swift's most sensual tracks. She sings on the chorus, "Say my name and everything just stops. / I don't want you like a best friend. / Only bought this dress so you could take it off."
Back when the song was released, and in part because of the "best friend" reference, some fans originally thought the song was about Swift's friend Ed Sheeran, but he clarified that it definitely wasn't...

Ang Lee has been making movies for over three decades. That is an impressive career. That the majority of those films are good (and some are amazing) puts him on a whole other level. Born in Taiwan, the Republic of China, and educated in the United States, Lee has made extremely Chinese films and extremely American films, as well as some that mix the two cultures — plus the occasional excursion to the United Kingdom or India for a literary adaptation. But wherever his films take place, and no matter who stars in them, Ang Lee is always interested in what's under the surface of his characters — in people's emotional lives, their feelings for others, and what they keep hidden from the world.
Family has been an omnipresent theme in Lee's work since he kicked off his career with three movies in a row about dads. Sexuality also comes up a...

As the closer to Saturday’s lengthy, star-studded Disney Studios panel at D23 Expo, James Cameron, beaming in from New Zealand where they are working on the finishing touches of “Avatar 2” (out this Christmas!) and the cast (on stage in Anaheim) revealed a good chunk of footage from the new movie. It was overwhelming, in every way possible, as Cameron debuted the footage in 3D Hfr to a noticeably muted response in the room.
“Since everybody’s together there, all our film fans and we’ve got the cast right there, why don’t we show you some scenes from the movie?” Cameron said, via satellite (or whatever high tech contraption he undoubtedly designed in a lab). “We’re going to hand out 3D glasses and you are going to be the first audience to get a sneak peek from a few scenes from ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’” (Cameron...

Joe Alwyn already has a career that defies simple classification. Fresh out of drama school in 2016, he was cast as the title character in Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” That breakout performance, which required the English actor to play an American soldier returning home to Texas, led to supporting parts in numerous acclaimed films, including the 2019 Best Picture nominee “The Favourite.” As if that weren’t enough, Alwyn also won a Grammy Award last year as co-producer on Taylor Swift’s blockbuster album “folklore.” (Alwyn and Swift are in a long-term relationship; Alwyn says he doesn’t know where he keeps the Grammy Award currently but suspects it lives on his piano.)
But Alwyn’s work in “Conversations with Friends” feels like a professional leap to another level. He plays Nick, a married actor who has an affair with a young college student named Frances (breakout Alison Oliver...

Alison Oliver has a story that wouldn’t be out of place in the classic film era, going from unknown to Hollywood with her first starring role in Hulu’s new series, “Conversations with Friends.” The Irish actress plays Frances, a shy, introverted young woman who, alongside her friend Bobbi (Sasha Lane), becomes close to intriguing couple Melissa and Nick (Jemima Kirke and Joe Alwyn). When Frances and Nick embark on an affair it changes everything.
Oliver explained to IndieWire via Zoom that she bonded quickly with both Alwyn and Lane. The latter, especially, as the first two weeks of filming involved being in the apartment Frances and Bobbi share. That bond is intriguing considering Lane herself was similarly thrust into stardom after her starring role in Andrea Arnold’s feature film, “American Honey.” Oliver also discussed working with the cast and director Lenny Abrahamson, and the responsibility she felt...

“Spencer” is slated to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September with Kristen Stewart front-and-center in the title role as Princess Diana. But even before its unveiling, seven of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets thus far think she’ll be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. If so, she’d follow in the footsteps of Natalie Portman in “Jackie.”
SEEWill Denzel Washington’s treacherous Shakespearean role finally bring him into the three-Oscar club?
Like “Spencer,” “Jackie” was a biographical drama from director Pablo Larrain that premiered at Venice and explored the inner life of a woman who struggled with life in the public eye. In that case, it was First Lady Jackie Kennedy at the time of her husband John F. Kennedy‘s assassination. In this case, it’s Diana in 1991 as she decides to divorce her husband Prince Charles. “Jackie” ended up...

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are incredibly private about their romance, but one of the biggest mysteries about their love story is when they actually started dating. While news of their relationship first broke in May 2017, they had actually been seeing each other months before that. In fact, Taylor reportedly met Joe when she was still with Calvin Harris in May 2016. Though she began dating Tom Hiddleston shortly after, the two eventually called it quits in September 2016, and that November she was spotted attending a screening of Joe's film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Which brings us back to the question: When did Taylor and Joe really start dating? Well, per usual, Taylor might have given us a clue in one of her songs.

Kristen Stewart is never boring on red carpets.
On Saturday, the actress stepped out for the Cannes Film Festival premiere of her directorial debut, Come Swim, wearing a getup as unique as she is. Stewart chose a long, gray-patterned skirt with suspenders and a peach bandeaux on top. The actress paired her look with a striking smokey eye that contrasted against her bleach blonde shaved head.
Stewart topped off the look with strappy black heels — and the actress had a lot to say about the required footwear in an interview shortly before hitting the carpet. Stewart spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about Cannes’ famously strict red carpet requirements.

There’s no question that Ang Lee is one of our most successful filmmakers. He’s had critical hits in a wide range of genres and subject matters, he’s one of only a handful of directors to win the Best Director Oscar twice, and he’s made unlikely blockbuster successes of Mandarin-languages period adventures, gay rural romances and an adventure about a boy on a boat with a tiger
But last year saw him have a rare disaster with his war drama “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” an ambitious film that hoped, with its high-frame rate technology, to suggest the future of cinema, but which instead was greeted with tepid reviews and brutal box office (it made less than $2 million domestically against a $40 million budget, though performed marginally better internationally).

Here’s a pairing that probably never occurred to you: Ang Lee and David Benioff. Variety reports that the two-time Best Director winner is in talks to direct the sci-fi-action film “Gemini Man,” which has been in one stage of development or another for a full 20 years. The most recent iteration would have seen “L.A. Confidential” director Curtis Hanson working with a script from Benioff, the co-creator and -showrunner of “Game of Thrones.”

Ang Lee's latest film is an unconventional film being distributed, on the whole, in a very conventional way...
In the race to set forth the future of cinema through various technological advances, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk feels like a major casualty. Once tipped for the Oscar race, the latest film from Ang Lee has bombed at the worldwide box office and been all but ignored by critics and awards bodies. This is partly due to complications in exhibiting the film in its intended format, because cinemas haven't adapted for this war drama as they did for major blockbusters of recent years.
Avatar successfully made the case for 3D, like the gift of fire from James Cameron to studio arsonists who post-converted every tentpole movie in sight, while Peter Jackson's Hobbit films were less successful in pioneering higher frame rates, inadvertently exposing the actors' make-up and making the audience dizzy.

After calendar grosses for September and October were unable to improve on 2015 numbers, November 2016 saw a +7.6% uptick compared to November 2015 as 264 movies grossed nearly $960 million. This also puts the Holiday 2016 season up +13% to date compared to Holiday 2015 with 209 movies combining to gross over $1.15 billion compared to $1 billion from 215 movies at the same point last year. Additionally, while August, September and October only saw two films (Suicide Squad and Sully) top $100 million at the domestic box office, four November releases have already topped the century mark, led by Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange with $222.2 million and counting. As noted, Doctor Strange led November's releases after opening over the first weekend of the month with $85 million and has since gone on to gross over $222 million. Strange was one of two Disney releases in November, the other being Moana, to gross over $100 million domestically adding to the studio's six films that have grossed over $100 million this year alone.

Production company Annapurna Pictures announced on Thursday, December 1, that it is expanding its operations with the addition of the division Annapurna Interactive, which will be devoted to producing and publishing video games.
“I’ve had a great passion for video games for as long as I can remember. Growing up, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ was one of my all-time favorites. My brother and I ran up quite a bill calling the 1-900 numbers for tips on those games, before the internet provided game-guides,” said Megan Ellison, Annapurna’s founder and CEO, in a statement. “The artistry and diversity of interactive storytelling is exciting and we look forward to exploring the limitless possibilities in gaming. We want to empower artists across this medium to make Annapurna Interactive their home and I believe we’ve assembled the perfect team to make that happen.”

The dismal box office for Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is the latest in a string of post-9/11 war flops – what can we learn about the lone exception?
There were only two other people in the theater when I saw Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk this Sunday evening in Chicago. One of them kept wandering out to the lobby and then coming back. Meanwhile, people were standing in line to get into Fantastic Beasts. Light-hearted mystical adventure is more popular than deliberately slow-paced and banal anti-war drama. Who knew?

Warner Bros.' Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took the top spot at the box office this weekend beating out the other new releases like Bleed for This from Open Road and The Edge of Seventeen from Stx Entertainment.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them pulled in an estimated $75 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, failing analyst expectations of at least $80 million.
The film, however, did do well internationally, where the film grossed an impressive $143.3 million, beating analyst projections of $125 million.
comScore's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented:
"Warner Bros.' wizarding universe of 'Harry Potter' is expanded as J.K. Rowling's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them' took in a spectacular $143.3 million internationally this weekend on over 24,000 screens in 63 markets. This plus an impressive number one North American debut of $75 million brings the global opening weekend total to $218.3 million.

The weekend didn't quite turn out as Mojo had forecast as the top twelve grossed a combined $149.4 million compared to Mojo's forecast, which foresaw the top twelve grossing over $180 million. Part of the blame lay on an over-estimation of the weekend's top new release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which did deliver a solid #1 opening, but couldn't match Mojo's lofty expectations. To that point, the vast majority of films fell below expectations including the weekend's two other new wide releases, The Edge of Seventeen and Bleed for This, neither of which managed to top $5 million as well as Sony's expansion of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which can't be looked at as anything more than a flop at this point. Yet, there were some other notable performances to focus on, particularly in limited release where Amazon and Roadside's Manchester by the Sea delivered strong opening results and Moonlight...

Where to find it? With franchises, naturally. Audiences are quite predictable that way.
Fantastic Beasts won the weekend easily and though it's opening wasn't really at the Harry Potter level it's got the Thanksgiving weekend coming up to make mountains of money to store in Gringotts to help fund further endless more installments. We'll never be free of Harry Potter. But, dear reader, I'm personally skipping this one. Those films just weren't my scene so unless this one also nets Oscar nominations I need a break; four years off wasn't enough! Among the other new films opening Edge of Seventeen and Bleed for This failed to excite moviegoers landing toward the bottom of the top ten. Ang Lee's soldier drama experiment Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk had a disastrous wide expansion taking in less than 1 million dollars in its first weekend...

Ang Lee with one of his Billy Lynn stars, Vin DieselOne of our favorite directors has a new film going wide today. Unfortunately number 13 proves unlucky for the great Ang Lee as Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, a military drama about the way we use soldiers as propaganda pawns or blank slates to project upon, is hard to watch. Let us pray for a swift death to Hollywood's current unfathomable interest in the high frame rate technique. (The technique is ugly, expensive but looks cheap, and doesn't look like cinema -- that's lose lose lose or three strikes you're out. So what's the appeal Hollywood?)
Nevertheless Ang Lee has given us so many riches over his 24 year feature film career that we ought to appreciate his filmography this weekend.
How many of his pictures have you seen?
All the posters are after the jump... ...

Fifteen years ago J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series made the leap from its place in literary history to its place in film history. Since then, the eight-film franchise has generated nearly $2.4 billion domestically and over $7.7 billion worldwide with the last of the Harry Potter films being released five years ago. This weekend a new adventure within J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World begins in the form of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a prequel to the Harry Potter franchise, debuting in over 4,000 theaters and looking at a #1 opening that could top $90 million. Meanwhile, fellow new releases this weekend include the coming-of-age dramedy The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld and Bleed for This starring Miles Teller. Additionally, Sony's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk expands into over 1,100 theaters and limited release standout Moonlight gets a moderate nationwide release into 650 theaters. When film editor Jennifer Lame called filmmaker Kenneth Longeran last year to discuss the possibility of working on his newest film, “Manchester By the Sea,” she saw potential in the project — and also potential to screw it up.
“I had heard for a while that Kenny was making a movie, and I was really excited to see if I could try to get involved in it,” Lame recently explained to IndieWire. “When I read the script, I was like, ‘Wow, this is such a great movie for an editor, because it’s so well-written and so well-constructed on the page, but it could totally get fucked up in the editing.'”
The film follows Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) as he attempts to rebuild his already-fragile existence after the sudden death of his beloved big brother, Joe (Kyle Chandler). Forced to return back to his hometown — which holds other tragic connotations...

With animated food orgies, grotesque depictions of living objects hacked to pieces, and F-bombs galore, “Sausage Party” shatters taboos with glee. Now, its creators are getting the last laugh.
Co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg first conceived of the deranged animated comedy nearly a decade ago, and every studio passed on it. “We really naively thought everyone in Hollywood would be very enthusiastic about an R-rated comedy about a hot dog trying to uncover the meaning of existence,” Rogen told a New York crowd filled with members of the Academy’s animation branch last weekend. “We were wrong.”
Years later, with the help of Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, “Sausage Party” came to vulgar life under the guidance of veteran animation directors Conrad Vernon (“Shrek 2”) and Greg Tiernan. To date, the movie has grossed over $138 million worldwide, well over its reported $19 million budget, inspiring distributor Sony to mount an...

This weekend saw Sony release two awards hopefuls; their directors have each received Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, and produced international blockbusters. With that kind of buildup, it’s unsurprising that both Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” had strong openings. Both are welcome in a rebounding specialized world, where “Moonlight” is finding wider audiences and “Loving” continues to show promise.

Disney continued its record-breaking year this weekend as 2016 became the studio's best year at the domestic box office ever. Contributing to that success, of course, is the studio's latest Marvel Studios release, Doctor Strange, which led the weekend box office for the second week in a row, contributing to a weekend in which the top twelve was up 56% compared to the same weekend last year. The weekend's success was a combination of strong holdovers such as Strange and fellow sophomore features Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge, along with newcomers including Arrival and Almost Christmas, all of which helped the top twelve combine for over $150 million. Dropping only 49% in its second weekend, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange delivered an impressive $43 million in its second weekend as the film's domestic gross climbs to over $153 million in just ten days of release. Among Marvel's single-character intro features this is the second fastest title to top $150 million domestically,...

Ellen DeGeneres asked the Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk star about what she remembers from those days, and Stewart's response was exactly what you'd expect from the ever so awkward, albeit charming, award winner. The current crop of acclaimed Quebec filmmakers shooting feature films south of the border speaks to an unprecedented infatuation on Hollywood’s part with French-Canadian directors.
Among the heavy hitters: Jean-Marc Vallée (“Wild,” “The Dallas Buyers Club,” HBO’s upcoming “Big Little Lies”), Philippe Falardeau (“The Bleeder,” “The Good Lie”), Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Sicario,” the forthcoming “Blade Runner” sequel), not to mention Xavier Dolan, who’s currently shooting his star-studded English-language debut, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.”
But there’s another remarkably prolific, genre-bending Montreal filmmaker – an award-winning festival regular who has clocked in nine features, one medium-length production and shorts to spare over the last decade – who’s never shown much enthusiasm about dipping his toes in the American studio system. No matter how many prizes or festival selections his films rack up (Berlin, Cannes, Locarno and Sundance among them) or how many retrospectives film societies program about his work,...

How British actor Joe Alwyn went from drama-school student to star of 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.' Matt Hollyoak
One week, Joe Alwyn was just another young man in drama classes at London's Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, running scenes with his classmates, preparing a showcase for a potential agent ... doing what any 25-year-old who'd dreamed of becoming the next Laurence Olivier (or at the very least, the next Tom Hiddleston) ever since he was a kid. The next, he was auditioning for director Ang Lee in Atlanta,...

Just a reminder that three major titles open today
Elle
France's Oscar entry, directed by notorious provocateur Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Turkish Delight, Black Book, etcetera) features screen icon Isabelle Huppert in arguably the crowning role of her inimitable career as a video game designer chillingly obsessed with uncovering the identity of her rapist. Reviewed. Expect an Oscar nomination or (crossing fingers) two. Reviewed.
[Opens today in New York. Wednesday in Los Angeles]
Arrival
Denis Villeneuve's (Sicario, Enemy) awesome thinking person's sci-fi epic about a curiously immobile alien invasion. The aliens have arrived but what do they want hovering in 12 locations over our world? An expert linguist (Amy Adams, wonderful) is recruited to communicate with them in this superbly executed drama. Reviewed. It's also perfect for this moment for this movie.
Arrival opens this weekend. I can't imagine a better moment to go see a humanity affirming sci-fi movie about overcoming what divides us.

Last weekend saw the top twelve outperform the previous year by a whopping +134.6%, a dramatic improvement after a sluggish October and Fall movie season. Fortunately, this weekend is looking like it too will show an improvement over the same weekend last year with a pair of holdovers leading the charge as Doctor Strange and Fox's Trolls are looking at another one-two finish. Among the week's new releases, Paramount's Arrival is looking at an opening that could even surpass the most optimistic predictions followed by Universal's holiday comedy Almost Christmas and EuropaCorp's thriller Shut In. Meanwhile, Sony will debut Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in just two theaters before going nationwide this weekend and A24 is expanding Moonlight into 176 theaters (+93) as it continues its impressive run in limited release. After an $85 million opening last weekend, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange should be looking at a second weekend drop right around 53% or so.
