Team Experience is discussing each Oscar category as we head into the precursors. Here's Eurocheese and Nick Taylor to talk Best Actress . . . .
Lily Gladstone is coming on strong for Killers Of The Flower Moon . . . .
Eurocheese: Hi Nick! So excited to discuss the award we all care about most here at The Film Experience - Best Actress. This year has given us a deep bench of competitors, making this feel like a category where we could see a curve ball or two.
Maybe it's best to get the obvious out of the way first - Lily Gladstone's subtle, moving work in Killers of the Flower Moon steals the film from her veteran costars, and Emma Stone's risky, inventive performance is the heart of Poor Things. I don't see the Actress field without them, and I expect one of them will most likely run away with the Oscar. Which one of them takes it?...

Jimmy Kimmel ‘Got Rid’ of ‘Harder’ Will Smith Jokes at 2023 Oscars: It Wasn’t ‘Our Place to Do That’
Jimmy Kimmel was planning on calling out Will Smith over his 2022 Oscars slap even “harder.”
The 2023 Academy Awards host apparently scrapped multiple Smith jokes throughout the ceremony, according to executive producer Molly McNearney.
“We didn’t want to make this year all about last year,” McNearney told Variety. “I cannot tell you how many Will Smith jokes we had that [we] then we got rid of. We think that only the best for that room made it.”
She added, “There were certainly some that went harder, but we didn’t think that was our place to do that. That should be Chris Rock, not us.”
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live” EP continued, “We really liked the idea of making fun of the reaction to it last year. I think we’re all still in a bit of shock of how that went down and how after watching that violence everyone had to...

Michelle Yeoh’s historic win at the 2023 Oscars was felt worldwide, but especially in Malaysia, where her mother, Janet Yeoh, tuned in via live stream.
During Sunday’s (12 March) ceremony, Yeoh took home the penultimate award of the evening for Best Actress for her leading role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Yeoh won the category over Cate Blanchett (Tár), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans), Ana de Armas (Blonde) and Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie).
In a video that is being widely circulated on social media, Yeoh’s 84-year-old mother Janet breaks down in excitement after her daughter’s name is announced.
She is visibly emotional as a screaming crowd around her embrace her.
She’s also wearing a white gown that’s vaguely resemblant to her daughter’s Oscars outfit.

Michelle Yeoh made Oscars history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress.
Yeoh, 60, accepted her award for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once as Evelyn Wang, a Chinese first-generation immigrant and laundromat owner.
She was up against Cate Blanchett (Tár), Ana de Armas (Blonde), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) and Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie). Before Sunday night’s ceremony, Yeoh had already won several awards, including a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and a SAG Award.
Yeoh received a standing ovation from her peers, and actress Halle Berry became emotional while presenting her with the award. Yeoh became the second-ever woman of color to win Best Actress. Berry was the first with her performance in Monster’s Ball in 2001.
In her acceptance speech, the actress said, “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility.

Now that the Oscar nominations have been announced, we still can’t get over the fact that Danielle Deadwyler was shockingly snubbed by the academy for her exceptional performance in Chinonye Chukwu’s “Till.” But there’s no reason to dismiss her amazing portrayal for the remainder of the awards season. The actress should still be considered legitimate competition to her fellow Best Film Actress SAG Awards nominees despite ranking fourth in our combined odds. She trails Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Cate Blanchett (“Tar”) and Viola Davis (“The Woman King”), while tracking slightly ahead of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”).
Below are my top five reasons why Deadwyler can still win at the SAG Awards.

Michelle Yeoh spoke out for the first time on Friday about the ongoing Andrea Riseborough Oscar campaign controversy.
When asked about the swirling speculation that Riseborough’s grassroots Oscar campaign for micro-indie “To Leslie” broke the rules, and the internal investigation at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Yeoh, herself a nominee and frontrunner for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” shrugged it all off.
“The Academy has always prided itself on having regulations and playing by the rules and if [cheating them] was so easy, it would have done before,” Yeoh told BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program. “We are always evolving on how to protect our integrity and I have great faith we will continue to do that.”

Believe it or not, it’s only been one week since Oscar nominations. But so much has happened since then. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the controversy over Andrea Riseborough‘s shocking Best Actress nomination for “To Leslie.”
After an an investigation into the celebrity-backed, social media-based campaign for Riseborough, the academy announced on Tuesday that the actress’ nomination will not be rescinded, but “social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern” were uncovered and regulations will be clarified for the future. We discuss why Riseborough’s nomination was never going to be rescinded, why no rules were really broken, why the new rules may just amount to “think before you tweet,” and why a lot of the outrage may be misplaced.

In the wake of this controversy, the idea has been floated that Riseborough could win.

After the surprise nomination of Andrea Riseborough for her role in the indie film To Leslie, the Academy has decided to conduct a review of all nominees’ campaign tactics.
Riseborough, whose performance was unanimously lauded, scored the nomination for best actress over other, far more high-profile names such as Viola Davis for The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler for Till, causing some speculation about the lobbying efforts by this year’s nominees. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not call out To Leslie by name when it announced Friday that it would be conducting a review to ensure campaigning was “conducted in a fair and ethical manner.”

The Academy will not take action against the campaign that helped boost actress Andrea Riseborough to a Best Actress nomination for the little-seen film “To Leslie,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in an email released on Tuesday.
Kramer said in the email that the Academy “has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded.” He added, though, “we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. Kramer’s email also conceded that the Academy needed to clarify its campaign rules, and said it would do so after this year’s Oscars. Typically, AMPAS releases new rules both for the Oscars and for campaigning in the late spring, after the Board of Governors meets to go over the past awards season.

Last week marked the annual ritual that comes every 12 months with Oscar nominations. Before the crack of dawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awakens the entire industry to reveal who will be nominated as “the best” from the year that was. And, as always, there were snubs and Oscars disappointments about who was ignored or passed over (and how all too often they appear to be Black when it comes to major categories like Best Director and Best Actress).
One major pleasant surprise, however, was the nomination of Andrea Riseborough in the Best Actress category for her role in To Leslie. The film premiered at SXSW earlier in the year and was an intimate character study that far too few audiences saw or even sought out. Nonetheless, the film’s central performance was nominated alongside expected nominees like Cate Blanchett for the spellbinding Tár and Michelle Yeoh...

The milestones keep coming for Avatar: The Way of Water.
James Cameron’s blockbuster is now the fourth top-grossing film of all time at the global box office after passing up the 2.071 billion grossed globally by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not adjusted for inflation. The Way of Water finished Friday with a worldwide cume of 2.074 billion, meaning that Cameron has directed three of the four top-grossing films of all time. Disney, which inherited the Avatar franchise when taking over 20th Century Fox, likewise dominates the upper reaches of the list.
The all-time roster is topped by Cameron’s original Avatar (2.92 billion), followed by Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (2.79 billion) and Cameron’s Titanic (2.194 billion).
Box office analysts believe The Way of Water will ultimately overtake Titanic even though a remastered 3D version of Titanic is being rereleased next week in time for Valentine’s Day (Paramount is handling the rerelease domestically,...

Update: The Instagram post shared on the “To Leslie” account has been removed.
The movie awards industry is buzzing following the news that the Academy is “conducting a review of campaign procedures” after Andrea Riseborough received a surprise best actress Oscar nomination for the independent drama “To Leslie.”

In a post dated two weeks ago, the official Instagram account for “To Leslie” quoted Richard Roeper’s blurb from his top 10 films of 2022 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he listed the movie at no. 5. The quote reads: “As much as I admired Blanchett’s work in ‘Tár,’ my favorite performance by...

Analysis of this year’s nominations for the Academy Awards.
Surprises and omissions
Arguably the biggest surprise this year, and one that brought audible gasps, was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough in best actress for Michael Morris’ To Leslie. A very delayed awards campaign saw Hollywood stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Edward Norton, Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett – to name a few – come out of the woodwork in support of Riseborough’s performance as an alcoholic single mother trying to rebuild her life.

For the first time since 2016, Tuesday morning’s Oscar nominations were broadcast not only to viewers at home but also several hundred press and publicists at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.
The in-person ceremony has been a longstanding tradition — dating back 40 years to when guests would share the nominations news via the building’s landline phones — but has been scrapped in recent years. With a livestream and broadcast feed now widely available, such urgency is no longer needed, but many still welcomed back the opportunity to watch the announcement in the room.
With nominations beginning at 5:30 a.m. Pt, press check-in started at midnight and continued until 4:45 a.m., eliciting many grumbles about the before-the-sun call time. Breakfast was served starting at 2:45 a.m., as talent, studio and awards publicists slowly trickled in and mingled with members of the press. Unlike some recent awards season events,...

After bringing us a ton of great content in October, Disney Plus is looking to keep the momentum going now that we’re into November. Among other things, they’ve added a new episode of the platform’s most popular show today, along with a Christmas flick and a whole handful of interesting titles that are sure to keep you busy over the weekend.
Of course, the most exciting addition of the bunch has to be the new installment of Disney Plus original series The Mandalorian. After the season 2 premiere kicked things off an an extremely exciting note, the story continues today with another chapter and already, the early reactions online seem to be positive. Then again, it’s hard not to love anything Baby Yoda related.
But if Star Wars isn’t really your jam, why not try Disney’s A Christmas Carol, the 2009 animated adaptation of the iconic Charles Dickens story?...

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t yet watched this week’s episode of Justified, “The Toll” written by Benjamin Cavell and directed by Jon Avnet, stop reading now. As he’ll do throughout the season, showrunner Graham Yost takes us inside the writers room. An additional warning this week for fans of The Good Wife: the big twist in that show’s March 23 episode is referenced, twice.

This is what it's like to sit at a restaurant table with Amy Poehler and Adam Scott during the after-party for "A.C.O.D" (which stands for "Adult Children of Divorce"), the pair's well-received indie comedy that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
It was a popular table. More than once, onlookers approached and tried to talk with Poehler and Scott. (I can only imagine this happens to them a lot.) One man, an employee at the restaurant, told Poehler that he'd worked with her at another restaurant, in Chicago, circa 1994 -- long before Amy Poehler became Amy Poehler. Poehler recognized her former co-worker immediately, even though she hadn't seen him in 19 years.
Poehler and Scott, who star on "Parks and Recreation" as the newly engaged Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt, enjoy an easy rapport with one another. (Their timing was so impeccable that Poehler almost had me believing...

In the three episodes of Kendra released so far, Sarah Jones has played the leading lady as a stoic nurse in a dimly lit operating room where the drug Versed has caused a patient to tell his wife he's cheating on her with a prostitute. The wife, Macy, asks Kendra for advice. Kendra is used to being invisible in what she calls "the twilight room," so when she's asked for an opinion or facts about her own life, it's a different kind of day for her on the job.
"I almost feel like being in that recovery room sort of helps her kind of stay low and keep anything that she might have to deal with at bay," Jones said. "I think there's this odd kind of protection she feels in that room because that room is all about the patient and whoever is in that room...

Ahead of 30 Rock's final season we look at the greatest comedy appearances, from Cher to Noel Fielding. Anyone we've missed?
It's a show known for its great guest star appearances. There are the top-billing megastars who reveal another side to themselves on the show – Oprah as Liz Lemon's exaggerated, hallucinatory 'Opraaaah', Jennifer Aniston's intensely obsessive Claire, Carrie Fisher's washed up writer Rosemary and Liz's very own Ghost Of Christmas Future. The repeat-appearance kooks – Will Arnett's Devon Banks and Marceline Hugot's Kathy Geiss – and the one-off show stealers (Wayne Brady as Liz's dull date). And yet somehow 30 Rock has a way of not making its guest stars seem perfunctory or like window dressing.
So the excitement surrounding the guest-star list for 30 Rock's final season, which begins airing in the Us at the beginning of next month, is understandable. Leaks suggest it might include Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston...
