Homegrown hits led by A Moroccan Affair and Championext, an explosion of comedies and the solid performance of several European indies have helped the Spanish box office to withstand the lack of US releases following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year.
Local productions were the highest grossing independent films at the Spanish box office in the year ending February 2024, with Álvaro Fernández Armero’s A Moroccan Affair at the top of the list.
The 2023 Spanish box office total was €504 million, with 77.8 million tickets sold, representing a 26% increase on 2022.
The two biggest Spanish films are both part of existing franchises.

After a bumper 40th anniversary edition of IFFR Pro last year, there’s a sense that Rotterdam’s industry strand has fined tuned things rather than introduced major changes for 2024.

Ahead of its 41st edition, International Film Festival Rotterdam’s industry event CineMart isn’t interested in uniformity.
“The trend is diversity,” says head of IFFR Pro Alessia Acone.
“We feature different themes, different production structures and different filmmakers. We want to make sure we can represent many things at the same time. This year, more than ever.”
The “eclectic” lineup of projects includes Aisling Walsh’s “Lucia,” about the only daughter of James Joyce, two-time Tiger Short Competition-winner Beatrice Gibson’s debut feature “La nuit,” Barbara Rupik’s animation “Cherub,” produced by Madants, previously behind “The Silent Twins,” and another animated film “Cloud of the Unknown.”
“We go from a bigger-budgeted film to a collectively written story and animations coming from two different sides of the world. From biographic stories to arctic expeditions, from dreamy landscapes to car chases,” observes Acone.

Filmmakers have many remarkable superpowers. The ability to create kaleidoscope fractals of terrifying credit card debt. The ability to turn any friendship into a stark transactional binary. The ability to blot out the very sun itself with the G&e crew’s interlocking vape exhalations.
Most impressively, filmmakers have the ability to take some abstract, internal element of the human experience and physicalize it into something photographable and dramatic. Sure: sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But sometimes in movies, a cigar is actually the memory of your dead father, a metaphor for America’s self-immolation, or—occasionally—a penis.
Of course, a reliable way to transmute emotions and anxieties into something tangible, visible and narratively propulsive is to lean on metaphysics and the supernatural. Just look at the prestige horror boom of the last 15 years, which has turned grief and despair into ghosts and haunted houses so often it’s become cliche.

ReviewThis is a 2-hour 23-minute drill on how smoking can kill you, delivered in the breathless fashion of a lecturer who is trying to cover the entire syllabus before the bell rings. In Pawan Kumar’s Dhoomam, Avinash (Fahadh Faasil), the marketing genius of a tobacco company, proposes that they make an anti-smoking ad that people would actually want to watch – and slyly promote smoking through it. The idea behind Dhoomam seems to be loosely based on this thought. A thriller about the ill-effects of smoking that would catch the audience’s attention. Except, there is nothing sly or subtle about the messaging. Easing his way back into U.S. theaters after a two-year hiatus and an explosively accusatory four-part documentary, Allen v. Farrow, that aired on HBO in 2021, Woody Allen returns with Rifkin’s Festival, an airy, lazy, though rather likable overseas rom-com served with a dose of melancholia and several large portions of cinematic nostalgia.
Shot in picturesque San Sebastián and based around the city’s annual international film festival, Rifkin rehashes bits of earlier Allen efforts, including the artist character from Vicky Cristina Barcelona — does he think all Spanish men are strapping, sexed-up figurative painters? — while revisiting some of his favorite movies in a new light.
The result seems to be primarily aimed at the director’s own age group — a demographic that hasn’t exactly been leading the box office charge these days and that could render this release from MPI Media Group (who briefly put out A Rainy...

Indian director Pawan Kumar is one of the most interesting and uncomprimising talents in South Asia today. His last film, Lucia, was the first crowd funded feature to appear from India and its trippy story about the effects of a hallucinogenic drug on an insomniac projectionist was the kind of story that India has been grasping at for years but failing to reach. So much of Indian cinema, both mainstream and independent, seems locked into very well defined categories, but Kumar is willing to forgo big bucks in order to make the films he wants to make. His latest project, U-Turn, is exactly that, a film that constantly challenges and defies categorization in the service of telling its own story. U-Turn is the story of...

Indian filmmaker Pawan Kumar made a name for himself back in 2013 when he made the nation's first crowdfunded feature. That film, the Kannada language Lucia, was a trippy thriller about an insomniac who turns to a mysterious street drug to combat his condition with unpredictable results. It made the rounds at international festivals, along with spawning a remake in Tamil and a deal for a remake in Hindi, before Kumar got back on the hunt to make his next feature. After a false start with a film he'd written titled C10H14N2, Kumar has now completed U Turn, another thriller, this one centered around a female protagonist played by Shraddha Srinath. While the plot synopsis doesn't give any details apart from the label of "mystery thriller",...

After the success of Lucia, Kannada filmmaker Pawan Kumar is crowdfunding his next film titled C10 H14 N2.
The crowdfunding campaign for the film started on October 31 on Indiegogo. At Rs. 3 Crore ( Usd 500000), it’s the biggest crowdfunding campaign for any Indian feature film on the internet.
“Though we have mentioned the target as Rs. 3Cr, we’d like to see it stretch up to 5Cr if the audience finds the project interesting. There are a few sequences in the film which will benefit largely from higher budgets”, writes Kumar on Indiegogo.
The campaign, exclusively targeted at Kannada-speaking audiences across the globe, has already raised more than Rs. 2.8 Lakhs (Usd 4600) in a day and will continue till November 30.
People who contribute Usd 1000 or more will receive the link to download the film one day before its theatrical release in Bengaluru. At Usd 500, contributors will receive the link three days after the theatrical release.

Last year Kannada filmmaker Pawan Kumar made a huge splash in the Indian independent feature world by successfully crowdfunding his second feature film, Lucia. The film made a big impression on the international festival circuit, and is commonly recognized as one of the finest Indian films of 2013. Now, the film has been remade in Tamil for an even larger audience as Enakkul Oruvan, starring the now ubiquitous Siddharth (Jigarthanda, Ko, Rang De Basanti, Midnight's Children), the rare Indian film star who moves fluidly between regional cinemas with very little problem.Lucia was the story of an insomniac projectionist who, in his desperation to find rest, comes across a drug guaranteed to help him sleep. However, he very quickly realizes that the effects of the drug...

Canon 5D Mark II is an outdated model. As of today, it is not even manufactured. But that’s what I used to shoot my recent feature film Lucia. There are many people in the industry who are still wondering how we shot a feature film in a 5D Mark II and also managed to have a theatrical release across the country as well as have the film showcased in many festivals! By the time they figure it out, I am sure the current version -5D Mark III – will be outdated as well.
The world is changing rapidly. All equations are changing in every domain, and filmmaking isn’t spared.
You have to know what it is that you and your film have, what is it that a tiny percentage of the world’s population would be interested in when they read about your film.

The Kannada film Lucia directed by Pawan Kumar is a first in many ways. It is one of the first ‘audience funded’ films to come out of India. The director raised money bypassing traditional financing, relying on the internet through his blog and a Facebook page. This means that Pawan Kumar no longer needed to make guesses about what might succeed with the public.
All cinema in India address one constituency or another; if much of mainstream Hindi cinema addresses the Anglophone Indian from the metropolises, Kannada cinema has been addressing the Kannada speaking people of the areas corresponding to former Princely Mysore – Bangalore, Mysore, Mandya, Shimoga etc. – rather than all of Karnataka. Indian art cinema itself, because it depends on government awards and patronage, has taken to addressing the Indian State and articulates issues regarded as important by it – secularism, agrarian indebtedness, displacement of farmers by mega projects etc.

With "Lucia", Indian regional films have touched a milestone. A crowdfunded project released under the PVR Director's Rare Banner, this Kannada film is radical in its approach.
It is the story of an unassuming torch bearer Nikki (Satish Neenasam) who works in one of the local theatres in the suburb of Bangalore. He leads a mundane life and suffers from insomnia. On one such sleepless night, he saunters out of his crowded shanty and bumps into a street-side.

Set in the cosmopolitan city of Bangalore, Lucia is a psychological thriller about an usher in a cinema hall who sees weird dreams which start affecting his reality.
Shreshtha Trivedi speaks to director Pawan Kumar about “Project Lucia”, crowd-funding and why he wasn’t allowed to watch Kannada films as a child.
How did the idea of Lucia come about ?
I fell asleep on a couch one day and had a strange feeling that I’m in a dream right now. And there was another memory of somebody knocking and I’m opening the door. So the film is about dreams. This is one strand. Second, I also act. I had done this very popular film...
