Like many coming-of-age directorial feature debuts, Dìdi (弟弟) is semiautobiographical, but Sean Wang’s personal background played as much of a role in literally making the movie as it did in inspiring its narrative.
The film, which was acquired by Focus after winning the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance in January, is the opening night feature tonight at Sffilm, Wang’s hometown festival. Both fests played a role in the development of the movie, with Wang having picked up multiple grants and fellowship awards, including a 2022 Sffilm Rainin Grant, in his journey to the screen. Making a film in under 25 days is a monumental feat for a filmmaker. However, with clever budgeting, creativity, and resourcefulness from a talented cast and crew, films can be made in a few days and even in a few hours.
Victoria (2015) and Russian Ark (2002) were filmed in a single continuous shot, pushing the boundaries of a well-thought-out planned production.
Many of these come from first-time independent filmmakers, including The Blair Witch Project (1998); Paranormal Activity ( 2007), Clerks (1994); Mind, Body & Soul (2024); El Mariachi (1992); Get Out (2017); Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Fruitvale Station (2013). These movies stand as testaments to the power of resourceful directing, proving that films can be made quickly and effectively on any budget.
Take a look back at movies that were made in under 23 days that were released at the box office.

Start counting down the days until Coogler’s next film – said to be a period vampire movie starring Michael B Jordan – arrives in cinemas. It’s out in 2025.
Ryan Coogler is one of the most talented filmmakers working in Hollywood today, so the news that he’s returning to direct an original project was especially welcome given he’s spent the last decade producing – the only movies he’s directed since 2015 are Creed and his brace of Black Panther films for Marvel.
While Coogler undoubtedly elevated each of those films beyond the sum of their parts, the thought of him returning to original storytelling for the first time since Fruitvale Station, his 2013 feature debut, is an exciting prospect indeed – doubly so since he’ll also be collaborating once again with that film’s star, Michael B Jordan.

The untitled reteam between filmmaker Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan is hitting theaters on March 7, 2025.

Ryan Coogler has a date to return to movie theaters. Warner Bros. has set a March 7, 2025 release for the project, which will star Michael B. Jordan and arrive in Imax.
The film is untitled, but true to Coogler form, it is described as an event film. Coogler is producing via Proximity Media with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. One of Coogler’s frequent collaborators, composer Ludwig Göransson, will executive produce with Rebecca Cho and Will Greenfield. Göransson, who earlier this month won the Oscar for best score for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, also won the Oscar for Coogler’s Black Panther.
Warner Bros. landed the project in February after a bidding war and under a unique deal that will see Coogler regain some rights to the project after a number of years. Coogler is eying a production date this spring in New Orleans.

Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

It was reported last month that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler would be reteaming with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan for a secret movie. Anticipation was high, with several major studios eager to snap up the project, but Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. has walked away as the victor following a heated bidding war.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project has been described as a period thriller involving vampires, which certainly sounds exciting. It’s also said to contain a few anime influences, which isn’t a surprise as Michael B. Jordan is known to be a big anime fan. Ryan Coogler will direct the vampire movie in addition to penning the script, and will also produce through his Proximity Media banner. Warner Bros. has emerged as the victor for Ryan Coogler’s next feature film.
Coogler wrote the script and will direct, with Michael B. Jordan starring. Coogler is also producing via his production company, Proximity Media. Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian are also producing.
The acquisition caps off three weeks of intense interest from movie companies, with Universal and Warners ending up as the final two battling for the crown.
Part of package’s appeal was the reteaming of Coogler and Jordan, a combo that has proven to be a winning one, both artistically and financially. Coogler has frequently worked with the actor on projects such as the Black Panther movies, as well as Creed and Fruitvale Station.
Sources say the studio and Coogler are moving fast and are eyeing an April start of production in New Orleans. One aspect of the deal, sources say, is an ownership component that...

Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan Genre Pic Has 3 Studios Vying In Year’s First Big Auction: The Dish
Exclusive: Looks like it’s down to three studios on the year’s hottest auction, the untitled genre thriller that will reunite writer-director Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, Deadline hears. Sony, Warner Bros and Universal are battling it out for a deal that would allow Coogler to start production this summer. It also might portend a longer relationship for the hitmaker-with-heart filmmaker and his Proximity Media.

Coogler’s script is a period genre film that is a true star vehicle for Jordan, who has worked with the director on Fruitvale Station and the Creed and Black Panther franchises. What’s next for Ryan Coogler after “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever“? THR reports that it’ll be a reunion for the filmmaker and his frequent leading man Michael B. Jordan. The duo have worked on all four of Coogler’s movies together, with Jordan the leading man in three (he cameos as Killmonger in “Wakanda Forever”). And since “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed” are arguably stronger films than Coogler’s MCU entries, it’s good news to hear the director will move on from superhero movies.

It looks to be that Ryan Coogler has learned a thing or two from Marvel Studios about keeping secrets. The partnership of Coogler and Michael B. Jordan goes back to when the duo had made the acclaimed film Fruitvale Station back in 2013. Then, the two broke through to become powerhouses in the movie business when they reunited for a daring spin-off of the Rocky franchise with 2015’s Creed. That partnership continued with Coogler’s next two features, Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Black Panther director wrote the screenplay as well, and is set to serve as director and lead producer, along with producers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Jordan will star.
The topic of the film is tightly under wraps. In fact, the team working on the project is being so secretive, executives and buyers were made to go in-person to the Beverly Hills offices of the filmmakers’ agency, WME, just to read the script and get details. So, most of the details have yet to become public, though what we do know is that the film will be a “genre” piece,...

Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler are reuniting once again, with both attached to an original genre film still shrouded in secrecy. The package was showcased to executives and buyers last week at the offices of WME, with additional meetings set to take place to seek a production commitment from suitors.
The project marks the first spec script from Coogler through his production banner, Proximity Media. It would reunite Jordan and Coogler for a fifth time, as the actor has appeared in each of the filmmaker’s features so far.
The pair’s “Fruitvale Station” debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, putting both on the map in Hollywood. Coogler and Jordan then collaborated on “Creed,” launching an ongoing spinoff of the “Rocky” franchise. Though Coogler has stepped away from helming the series, Jordan has starred in two more entries, taking the director’s chair for the third one.

The 40th Sundance Film Festival kicks off Thursday in snow-covered Park City, Utah. In the wake of twin strikes and an indie biz still recovering from the Covid pandemic, it’s difficult to read how hungry buyers are for films that are mostly light on starpower and an overtly commercial premise.
For instance, the buzziest title seems to be Love Me, because it stars Kristen Stewart and freshly minted Emmy-winning Beef star Steven Yeun. But it is a completely execution-dependent premise — long after humanity’s extinction, a buoy and a satellite meet online and fall in love. Two fine actors, but neither is a giant theatrical So there could be competition for this one, but buyers will be coming in cold and, as one veteran fest buyer said, “it’s like every other movie here. Let’s see what you got.”

For four decades, Sundance has maintained a reputation as one of the most important film festivals in America for independent filmmakers from around the globe. To commemorate its 40th anniversary in 2024 and the enormity (and reciprocity) of that cultural footprint, festival leadership set a series of restoration screenings to highlight many of the most memorable films programmed throughout its history.
“When you look at the way the independent film movement has evolved and changed over the years, from the maturation of an industry and the opportunities that artists have found, to the way that an audience has been built around the work, you see a festival that has evolved alongside it,” says John Nein, senior programmer and director of strategic initiatives.
This year’s festival takes place Jan. 18-28, in person in Park City and Salt Lake City, with a selection of titles available online nationwide from Jan. 25-28. The...
