The MonsterVerse has, somewhat quietly, become one of the most reliable franchises going in Hollywood at the moment. For a full decade dating back to 2014's "Godzilla" right up through this year's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," these films have built up a loyal audience with no signs of fatigue on the part of the viewers. While Warner Bros. and Legendary are quickly looking to get a new installment going, they will need a new director, as we recently learned that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the helm. So, who should take his place?
Wingard is the only filmmaker to direct two MonsterVerse installments, having helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" as well as "The New Empire," which now ranks as the highest-grossing "Godzilla" movie ever. So sure, the studio would probably have liked him to return, but he's busy with other projects. Besides, that just opens the...

After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

The V/H/S saga reached a high point in 2023 with V/H/S/85. This Nineties-set instalment, which features work from accomplished directors Jennifer Reeder and Chloe Okuno, was made two years earlier, but some fans will only be getting their hands on it now. Unfortunately, whilst it gets closer to the spirit of early entries in the series and may be seen by some fans as a welcome return to form, it’s unlikely to win over anybody new.
Whereas V/H/S/85 was firmly rooted in the relevant time period and engaged with the condition of the medium at that time, there’s relatively little here to tie it to ’94. Most of the trends it picks up on from that era still apply today, beyond the fact that apes themselves have largely disappeared, so it’s not clear why the title has been chosen. Rather than focusing on anything temporally relevant, the five stories comprising.

Another year bites the dust, friends. Another year where I've watched too many horror movies, and now it’s time to face the impossible task of sorting the best into a ranked list. I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
…Ok maybe I can but still, it’s harder than it looks! There are so many noteworthy films not listed, but that's the beauty of opinions and personal preferences. My list is mine and mine alone. Other critics will have their own takes, and more power to the variety of responses highlighting as many releases as possible. So let’s get...

Horror remains as vital as ever. While other films flounder at the box office, horror almost always reigns supreme. Audiences simply cannot get enough. We inherently love to be scared; to be disturbed; to be frightened. To sit in the dark and let something scary take hold of us. The horror films of 2023 were an eclectic bunch — weird, wonderful, both fresh and familiar. Slasher throwbacks, modernist takes on classic tropes, and bold new voices in the genre all presented themselves to us, giving us the creeps in the process.
As is always the case when making a list like this, it's important to recognize the titles that didn't make the cut. So while we're proud of our ranked list of the top 10 horror movies of 2023, we also want to highlight several titles not on the list — "Knock at the Cabin," "The Sacrifice Game," "Haunted Mansion," "The Conference," "The Outwaters," "The Passenger,...

After the record-breaking success of V/H/S/85, Shudder announced at New York Comic-Con that a new V/H/S movie is in development, with a focus on sci-fi horror.
The new V/H/S movie will feature “five new bloodcurdling tapes” and will be released in 2024. “Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7 it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom. “The sci-fi horror genre provides us an infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms, a formula which we’re confident will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.“

Horror veteran Scott Derrickson introduced Doctor Strange to the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2016, but left the director’s chair for its 2022 sequel “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” In a recent podcast interview, the filmmaker assured that he exited the franchise not because of any behind-the-scenes drama, but because he wanted to avoid making “a really bad movie.”
“When the producer or the studio and the filmmaker are making different movies, you end up with a monstrosity and, you know, that’s why I had to bounce,” he explained.
Derrickson was interviewed on the podcast “The Discourse” about his contribution “V/H/S/85,” the sixth installment of the horror anthology series that began in 2012 and which has just been released on Netflix.
During the interview, Derrickson was asked about his exit from “Doctor Strange 2.” He said that he wanted “Multiverse of Madness” to be a “genuine horror film of sorts...

If the above image doesn’t make it abundantly clear, director Scott Derrickson brings a rather bloody, violent segment to V/H/S/85 with “Dreamkill.”
Derrickson, who needs no introduction, recently directed the horror blockbuster The Black Phone for Blumhouse and previously helmed horror favorites like The Exorcism of Emily Rose. With “Dreamkill,” Derrickson and writing partner C. Robert Cargill evoke the gritty horror of their nightmarish feature Sinister. It fits right at home with the grainy textured horrors packaged in V/H/S/85, one of the most cohesive installments of the popular anthology franchise yet.
That’s not a surprise to the director, who spoke with Bloody Disgusting about V/H/S/85 after the film’s Fantastic Fest debut.
“I think it’s inevitable that the film as a whole would come out looking the way that it does because you’re talking about VHS materials at the very early stages of its consumer usage,...

The “V/H/S” franchise was already on death’s door by the time Shudder resurrected it as an annual streaming event in 2021. So it would be inaccurate to blame the warmed-over familiarity of its sixth installment on the fact that Bloody Disgusting has to churn out another feature-length omnibus every October — especially because the freshest and most satisfying of the five shorts that make up “V/H/S/85” comes from series producer David Bruckner, who should be more burned out on the concept than anyone else at this point. Nevertheless, the “Now That’s What I Call Found Footage!”-ification of these horror anthologies has inevitably confronted them with a degree of saminess, an ironic symptom of a process that leaves precious little time for quality control.

The V/H/S franchise has become a behemoth over the years. What started as a quaint series of shorts has become an annual tradition for horror fans. And while not every segment always hits, the ones that do leave a lasting impression. And V/H/S/85 is no different, planting itself firmly in the decade of decadence, the 80’s feels like a place this series was made for. I was fortunate enough to sit down with directors David Bruckner, Mike P. Nelson and Natasha Kermani to discuss how they got involved with the series. We go over how the stories are concocted, just how much collaboration there is between the segments, and how they get that unique look.
V/H/S/85 plot:

Writer/Director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl, Lucky) uses cyberpunk horror to tap into contemporary anxieties over technology in her V/H/S/85 segment “Tknogd.”
The latest anthology installment rewinds to a grittier 1985 and arrives exclusively on Shudder on October 6.
Bloody Disgusting caught up with Kermani ahead of V/H/S/85’s Shudder debut to learn more about her segment and its cyberpunk origins.
There was no question for the filmmaker that she’d tap into her love of sci-fi horror for “Tknogd.”
“Yeah, I just love that stuff,” Kermani says. “I mean, Johnny Mnemonic and Lawnmower Man, it’s just a very weird sub-genre. That was our goal. The pinnacle was, ‘Can we do Lawnmower Man?’ I really love the cyberpunk thing. Like, ‘hack the world, man.’ That was totally my vibe for a long time. “Write what you know” is a common piece of writing advice and something that came naturally to writer/director Gigi Saul Guerrero when drawing inspiration for her historical horror segment “God of Death” in the latest anthology installment V/H/S/85.
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
The filmmaker behind recent horror hits Bingo Hell, Into the Dark’s “Culture Shock,” and Satanic Hispanics joins an all-star lineup for V/H/S/85 that includes David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
Guerrero’s segment, “God of Death,” draws from Mexican mythology and the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985. For the filmmaker, the harrowing historical event that inspired her segment happened to be personal.
“As soon as they told me ’85, it just clicked to do the most famous traumatic event that happened in Mexico City, where I was born and raised,...

V/H/S/85, the latest entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S/ franchise, will begin streaming on Shudder service (which previously had great success with V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99) tomorrow, October 6th. This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) – and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Derrickson revealed that his segment is set in the same universe as The Black Phone! It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

Director Mike P. Nelson is no stranger to infusing horror with political bite, having previously helmed 2021’s Wrong Turn and 2018’s The Domestics. For V/H/S/85, Nelson gets ambitious in narrative structure and tone with the segment “No Wake.”
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
Joining the V/H/S team was an easy choice for Nelson when it became clear that the intent was to steer clear of the neon ’80s aesthetic.
“I remember speaking with [producer] Josh Goldbloom and Josh saying, ‘Yeah, so we’re doing ’85, and we’re trying not to do the typical kind of clean, neon thing.'” Nelson recalls. “And I was like, ‘Oh, for the love of God, thank you. Okay, good. I got something. I got something. This is going to be a lot of fun.’ That was such a breath of fresh air.”

Ah, 1985. A time of big hair, even bigger shoulder pads, and the rise of the Vcr. It was only inevitable that all those mullet-sporting dads that insisted on bringing the camcorder with them on every trip would eventually record something horrifying (and we’re not talking about your elementary school pageant show). V/H/S/85 brings that analog terror to life in the newest installment of the now annual horror anthology. Happy Halloween y’all. It’s Found Footage time!
Kicking this macabre mixtape of horrors off is David Bruckner’s Total Copy, serving as a loose wraparound story, and presented as a taped-off-tv documentary about a mysterious entity that is being fed an abundance of media to better understand humanity. One of the stranger segments of the entire V/H/S franchise, Total Copy doesn’t quite work as a traditional wraparound but builds slowly to an out-of-this-world finale.

Scott Derrickson has hidden a nod to 'The Black Phone' in new horror 'V/H/S/85'.The filmmaker - who adapted Joe Hill's story and turned it into a horror blockbuster last year with Ethan Hawke playing the sinister Grabber - has revealed how his 'Dreamkill' segment in Shudder streaming platform's upcoming anthology acts as a prequel of sorts. He told ComicBoook.com: "Oh, there's actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody's picking it up."But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he's behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. The most exciting thing about the "V/H/S" films is that, six entries in, the found footage horror anthology series still has the capacity to truly surprise. Less of a cohesive universe and more of a sandbox for various directors to throw their wildest, silliest, gnarliest, and scariest ideas at the wall to see what sticks, the franchise has proven consistent in its inconsistency. An entry that is chock-full of bangers from filmmakers firing on all cylinders will be followed by a film where a few too many segments feels a bit half-assed -- the dip in quality from the largely stellar "V/H/S/94" to the largely undercooked "V/H/S/99" comes to mind.
But as long-suffering horror fans know, there's a joy in watching a long-running series bounce back. And "V/H/S/85" is one of the franchise's strongest bouncebacks yet: there's not a single bad segment to be found, and each story feels fueled by ambition,...

"Where did you get those tapes?!" Shudder + Bloody Disgusting have revealed the main official trailer for V/H/S/85, the next film in this found footage anthology series. It's now the fifth one - V/H/S/99 debuted just last year (also on Shudder now). As expected, V/H/S/85 (#5) is premiering at Fantastic Fest in TX this week before streaming in October. "Get ready for a found footage compilation of disembowelment, clubbing, and dismemberment, just to name a few of the grisly deaths. It’s Reaganomics and imperial disillusionment in the way that only the V/H/S movies can do them — with the fake blood hose nozzle cranked up to the soak setting." Featuring new segments made by the horror filmmakers: Mike P. Nelson, Natasha Kermani, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Scott Derrickson, David Bruckner. The Tron-themed one looks bonkers. This whole thing looks insane! Just as expected - more VHS madness. // Continue Reading ›...

Found footage horror fans rejoice, as another installment in the long-running "V/H/S" franchise is just around the corner, and we've got a new trailer showcasing the '80s goods coming our way this Halloween season. That's right! The franchise is taking a trip back in time with "V/H/S/85" which, as the title implies, will be set right in the heart of the 1980s, when home video was just beginning to revolutionize the movie industry and slasher films were dominating the landscape.
The latest entry in the horror anthology series, which is following in the footsteps of last year's "V/H/S/99," is set to screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week, but it's going to be debuting on Shudder early next month, making it easily accessible for your spooky season viewing needs. So, what horrors are contained within this collection of throwback '80s shorts? Let's have a look-see.
