Director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 “Beatles” documentary “Let It Be” has been remastered, with a fresh version streaming May 8, 2024 on Disney+:
“Let It Be” features original film footage remastered by producer Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production as well as remastered audio.
Jackson added he was “absolutely thrilled” to see the new project come together and described “Let It Be” and his series “Get Back” as “one epic story, finally completed after five decades.”
“The two projects support and enhance each other,” he said. “Michael Lindsay-Hogg was unfailingly helpful and gracious while I made ‘Get Back’ and it’s only right that his original movie has the last word...looking and sounding far better than it did in 1970.”

Known for his adventures as the world-renowned archaeologist, Harrison Ford reprised his role as Indiana Jones after 15 years in James Mangold’s 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, despite the anticipation surrounding his return, the film failed miserably at the box office, which has been attributed to the lack of appeal to a wide audience and its excessive budget. Reports suggested potential losses of around $100 million for Disney.
James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
However, the projected losses for the film could have been even more severe if the director had pursued his initial title for the film, which involved naming it after The Beatles album, Magical Mystery Tour.
James Mangold Wanted to Name Indiana Jones 5 After The Beatles Album
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny follows the titular character on a quest to find an ancient artifact while grappling with personal losses.

John Lennon cultivated a rebel image in The Beatles. He freely spoke his mind — about music, art, culture, and celebrities — without worrying about who he offended. That included his bandmates and himself. Lennon said the hit song he gave to The Rolling Stones was just a throwaway; it was their first hit. He may have thought of himself as a rebel, but John’s face turned red when he met royal authority figure Princess Margaret, according to Cynthia Lennon.
Cynthia Lennon said John Lennon ‘stood red-faced’ when he met Princess Margaret
They became household names thanks to the music, but The Beatles became movie stars when A Hard Day’s Night hit theaters in 1964. The Fab Four brought out the biggest stars in England for the film’s premiere on July 6, 1964, including British royalty. Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth, attended the movie’s debut and the meet-and-greet party afterward.

Many famous musicians remember where they were the first time they heard The Beatles. They are an incredibly influential band and jumpstarted a love of music for multiple generations. U2’s lead singer Bono was very young when he first heard The Beatles and still remembers it vividly.

U2 emerged on the rock scene in the 1980s, about a decade after The Beatles had split up. The Irish band has garnered international acclaim and success, but none of that might have happened without The Beatles. After two years with The Beatles, drummer Pete Best’s time with the band came to an abrupt end. Not long before the band got their first No. 1 hit, they fired Best and replaced him with Ringo Starr. A number of people who were tangentially attached to The Beatles wrote books about them or sold their stories to news publications. Best resisted doing this for years.

In the early days of The Beatles, they worked with several different drummers. When one drummer, Norman Chapman, had to leave the group for the National Service, they found themselves without a drummer ahead of their residency in Hamburg, Germany. Luckily, Best was looking for a job.

In his decades of fame, Paul McCartney has encountered hundreds of photographers — he even married one. He didn’t always get along with the people taking his photo, though. On at least three occasions, McCartney got into a physical altercation with photographers.

In the 1960s, a conspiracy theory that McCartney had died and was replaced by a body double spread. Journalist Dorothy Bacon and photographer Terence Spencer decided to look into the rumors by knocking on McCartney’s front door on a Sunday morning. They found McCartney not only alive but enraged by their presence.
“He was absolutely red in the face with fury,” Spencer said, per the book Paul McCartney: A Life by Peter Ames Carlin. “He had one look at me and hurled the slop bucket. The irony was...

When a Beatles song appears in movies and television shows, it usually means that the production paid a good deal of money for the right to use it. The Beatles have maintained such a powerful influence on popular culture that the weighty price tag is typically worth it. Here are seven perfect uses of Beatles songs in movies and television.

One of the most prominent examples of a Beatles song in popular culture is “With a Little Help From My Friends” in The Wonder Years. Paul McCartney always seemed to be able to create a song from thin air. Anyone who watched The Beatles: Get Back saw Macca pull the song “Get Back” out of thin air. He proved his genius as a songwriter when he wrote “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da,” based solely on a slang phrase one of his friends uttered. When inspiration struck, Paul arranged one gentle Sgt. Pepper song without producer George Martin.
George Martin (left) and Paul McCartney | Kevin Mazur/WireImage Paul McCartney could write songs quickly
Paul once said writing songs with John Lennon was easy because they had a pleasabt back and forth relationship (at least for a while). That allowed them to work quickly. Yet Paul also wrote rapidly on his own. The supposedly wistful Get Back sessions and “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da” weren’t the only examples of his songwriting prowess.
Macca wrote Let It Be opener “Two of Us” while on a date with Linda.

A track on 1987’s Cloud Nine perfectly describes how George Harrison felt in his career at the time. Even though George spent years claiming he didn’t have a career, “Wreck of the Hesperus” talks about how he felt about working in the music industry.
George Harrison | Dave Hogan/Getty Images George Harrison had a complicated career
It’s complicated to say that George had a career because he didn’t exactly. After The Beatles split, he never pursued a solo career. He only released All Things Must Pass as a reaction to leaving the group.
However, when that triple album did well, George continued to make music and release it. Toward the late 1970s, though, things got complicated. The record companies started demanding certain music. George just wanted to be left alone to make the music he wanted. He didn’t mind if no one liked it.

Though all of The Beatles were married by 1970, their manager, Brian Epstein, didn’t initially want them to have wives. He believed that their fan base would be disappointed or even lose interest in them if they did. Others had different opinions about why marriage would spell doom for the band. A writer posited the misogynistic view that The Beatles would break up because their wives wouldn’t be able to get along.

“Most of the time I had to keep it secret,” Cynthia wrote in her book, John.

How much difference a year makes. While Labor Day 2021 saw a box office surge despite Covid-19 fears thanks to the release of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” this holiday weekend has seen a 55 year-over-year drop as cinemas continue to trudge through a dry spell on the release calendar.
Current industry estimates have overall figures for the 4-day weekend finishing at just 63-65 million. In 2021, “Shang-Chi” boosted that total to 140 million, and prior to the pandemic, only one Labor Day weekend in the 2010s saw a 4-day total below 100 million (97 million in 2017.)
The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) stemmed the tide somewhat with National Cinema Day, a campaign that offered 3 movie tickets at cinemas nationwide on Saturday with major chains like Cinemark and AMC also offering discounts on popcorn and soda.

The Beatles‘ final film, Let It Be, showed a tired band in the midst of a breakup. That didn’t mean the musicians weren’t having a good time. They were just concentrating on learning and rehearsing new music. Peter Jackson found the fun in the tedium of discovery and Walt Disney Studios bought the worldwide distribution rights. Executive Chairman Bob Iger announced that Disney will release the documentary The Beatles: Get Back in the U.S. and Canada on Sept. 4, 2020. Global release details will follow.
“No band has had the kind of impact on the world that The Beatles have had, and The Beatles: Get Back is a front-row seat to the inner workings of these genius creators at a seminal moment in music history, with spectacularly restored footage that looks like it was shot yesterday,” Iger said in a statement.

The Tribeca Film Festival on Monday unveiled plans to kick off its 19th installment with the world premiere of director Mary Wharton’s Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President – a rockumentary-style presidential portrait that shows how popular music helped propel the folksy peanut farmer from rural Georgia to the White House. The film will launch a politically active fest this year with a get-out-the vote effort.
The opening-night announcement came on President’s Day during a divisive election season and the festival said a focus is to showcase the power of inspiring change through art, politics and community as it unspools April 15-26.

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival gets underway today, and it has been the toughest market to handicap in a good long time. Conversations with buyers and sellers point to a lack of obvious star power in the slate of pictures available for acquisition. It could well be a quiet market, meaning that the sums could be modest with dealmaking for most films lingering beyond the festival. Toronto was that way last fall, but that festival held the promise of the splashy Hugh Jackman-Allison Janney film Bad Education, which scored an HBO deal that came in just below the $17.5 Birth of a Nation deal that still holds the Sundance record. If there is a film like that here, it was pre-bought and comes into Sundance with distribution. There are 27 films entering the festival with distribution, compared with 22 last year.

Oddsmakers studying generational trends in Oscar voting may likely bet that Marriage Story stands a better chance than The Irishman to win Best Picture. Or that Parasite will earn more kudos overall than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It comes down to scope: The prototypical winners of the past decade are Moonlight and Spotlight. Smaller is better.
The Academy likes to remind us that one third of its voters are new, but newcomers still remember the not-so-distant past when contenders carried a different message, heralding their extravagant showmanship: The Greatest Show on Earth, Around the World in 80 Days, Ben-Hur and An American in Paris. In 1962, voters got to choose between Lawrence of Arabia, The Longest Day, The Music Man, Mutiny on the Bounty and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Given the brave new world of streaming services, will the Oscar contenders of the future continue to reflect the “smaller is better” mandate?...

In a moment where we have to wonder if any original ideas still exist in Hollywood, along came “Yesterday,” a film that imagined what the world would be like if arguably the 20th century’s most original entertainers never existed at all. The summer crowdpleaser conjured a world where The Beatles never happened, and while this unique concept wooed global audiences to the box-office tune of $151 million, a legendary former band member wasn’t initially too keen on the idea.
According to a new Billboard interview with Paul McCartney, screenwriter “Richard Curtis, who [directed] ‘Love Actually,’ wrote to me with the idea. And I thought, ‘This is a terrible idea,’ but I couldn’t tell him, so I said, ‘Well, that sounds interesting — good luck,'” the former Beatle said. “I didn’t think anything more of it.”
However, that changed when a certain Academy Award-winning British director became attached to the project.

To call Elvis Costello an artistic chameleon is almost too easy. He’s more akin to a Cheshire Cat, appearing and disappearing across the pop music spectrum at will, identifiable only by the sly grin that permeates his work. The breadth of his collaborations are limited only by his own imagination and good taste; over the last two decades he’s played with everyone from the Roots to the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint to Chet Baker, Marcus Mumford, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and — most famously — his crack backing band, the Imposters. So, it makes total sense that he...

52 years after it was first produced, a rare piece of Beatles history is available on YouTube. A Christmas compilation Paul McCartney created for his bandmates has been uploaded online.
The compilation is titled Unforgettable, and it is believed that only three copies of it were ever printed: one each for John, George, and Ringo, who received it on acetate discs as Christmas presents in 1965. On the album, McCartney plays the role of DJ, introducing each of the compiled songs and adding in some improv of his own. "And so in this program, Unforgettable, we hope that you are not gonna forget us and are gonna join in," McCartney riffs in his introduction.
Unforgettable takes its name from the Nat King Cole number that leads it off. Other songs featured in the compilation include "I Get Around" by The Beach Boys and "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis Presley.

For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to attend a Beatles concert in the 1960s, Ron Howard’s Eight Days a Week just might be the next best thing. The 2016 documentary traces the band’s rise from a cramped and dank cellar in Liverpool to record breaking television appearances, jam packed stadiums, and—ultimately—rock immortality. Lovingly assembled through rare and often unseen fan home movie footage, Howard’s film also draws on more familiar material—restored to the highest echelons of HD— and new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Jane Campion's A Girl's Own Story (1984) is free to watch below. In consecutive close-ups, the inscrutable faces of three girls appear briefly on screen, as we hear the tune from a music box. Cut to the page of a book with the illustration of a male body, headless but with an erect penis. The girls’ hands gather around the male figure. One finger starts gliding across the drawing, carefully following the anatomical lines. The camera moves, trailing the finger that ends up underlining a sentence at the bottom of the page: “This sight might shock young girls.” The music ceases, hysterical female screams take over. Superimposed onto the black background, in an overwrought, baroque typography, the film’s title appears. This is the start of A Girl’s Own Story (1984), the fourth short directed by Jane Campion...

We're talking the 10th anniversary of Across the Universe in Chris Feil's weekly column on music in the movies!
Across the Universe came to the screens just as jukebox musicals were becoming especially grating on Broadway, but more of a curiosity for the big screen. The film promised stunning Julie Taymor-directed imaginative images set to a massive catalog from The Beatles - and delivered us something a bit more uneven than the creativity explosion that sounds like. Perhaps the high bar already set by invoking the biggest band in the history of popular music was an impossible goal, but the film does provide at least a fun reimagining for some of the best music of the century. A Beatles musical in any context? Yes please (with trepidation)!
