Dr. Chris Wegner is fighting doggedly in outpatient rehabilitation to learn to walk again. However, for fear of finally failing, the doctor is on the verge of giving up of his own accord. In order for Chris to continue, the ambitious Dr. Harris agrees to admit a penniless patient from the Eifel practice to the hospital without health insurance for his sake: Bernd Wachler, formerly a respected building contractor and even sponsor of Chris' handball team. Since the bankruptcy of his company and the separation from his family, Wachler has suffered from social decline as well as from mysterious states of exhaustion. For the care assistant Vicky Röver there is no doubt that the depressed patient urgently needs help. She not only tries to find out where the threatening shortness of breath comes from, but also to get to the bottom of his mental pain. She suspects the key to be in the relationship with his ex-wife and his daughter: While one is radically turning away, the other is looking for a new beginning.
