Aerosmith kicked off their “Peace Out” farewell tour on Saturday (September 2nd) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, where the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band played an 18-song set filled with their many hits and fan favorites.
Back in May, Aerosmith announced that they’d be embarking on a final tour (tickets available here), stating, “It’s not goodbye, it’s Peace Out! Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives.”
On Saturday, singer Steven Tyler and company launched the first show of the 40-date North American outing with “Back in the Saddle,” followed quickly by the hits “Love in an Elevator,” “Cryin’,” and “Janie’s Got a Gun.” Alongside those instantly recognizable tunes, the band worked in deeper cuts like “Adam’s Apple,” “No More No More,” and “Seasons of Wither,” as well as their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Stop Messin’ Around.

[Note: With the film finally getting a physical release in the UK, here's a reposting of my review of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich from last years festival run]
Recently divorced and reeling, Edgar returns to his childhood home to regroup his life. When Edgar finds a nefarious looking puppet in his deceased brother’s room, he decides to sell the doll for some quick cash. Girl-next-door Ashley and and comic book pal Markowitz join Edgar for a doomed road trip to an auction at a convention celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets at the convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time.
I’m going to be honest, there’s absolutely no way this review is unbiased.

Avid followers of Charles Band's Puppet Master series are most likely cheering at a new reimagining coming late Summer. After thirteen films and a comic book series by Action Lab Comics, most fans saw fatigue in this producer's vision and were disappointed when the comic continuation was canceled. The curtain call was inevitable since the fan base is not huge. Exit Band and enter Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich by Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund who promise to return the series back to whence it came — a product of supernatural terror. The original film dealt with a mysterious toymaker, committing suicide and providing no answers. The meat of the product was on how curiosity seekers are wanting answers to an age-old mystery. They are psychics and paranormal investigators. With the new film, the tale rests on an individual recovering from a divorce and finding a puppet he thinks can...

A cabin in the woods, a group of kids, and something in the basement. Given the idea that the film is based on Swedish folklore that tells the legend of almost-human creatures living underground, it’s not hard to realise that Wither is an homage to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead. In fact this is such a blatant “homage” it could almost be Evil Dead 4 by any other name!
Ida and Albin are thrilled to be setting off for a fun holiday with their friends to a remote cabin in the vast Nordic woodlands. But their carefree weekend comes unhinged when one of them accidentally unleashes a mysterious and murderous creature trapped in the basement. Worse, under the floorboards lurks an evil from Sweden’s dark past.

Hansel and Gretel Get Baked
Written by David Tillman
Directed by Duane Journey
USA, 2013
Not long after Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton reimagined the fairytale duo for the Twilight generation, Hansel and Gretel Get Baked offers a marginally more laidback interpretation on the fable for those more inclined towards other slacker duos like Jay and Silent Bob or Harold and Kumar. Director Duane Journey trades in traditional Gothic horror sensibilities for a stoned-eye view of suburbia, priding home-grown fantasy over full-blown horror.
If this is squared for the stoner market, then it’s peculiar for the director to take a cautionary tale about the dangers of stepping into a stranger’s house and switch the goodies from candy to marijuana. Twin Peaks star Lara Flynn Boyle plays the wicked witch, whose effort to lure unsuspecting teens into her gingerbread house is rewarded with the succubus-like theft of their youthfulness. When...

It would of course be a massive understatement to say that Sam Raimi's mid-'80s indie classic horror flick The Evil Dead is a memorable or influential movie. The film inspired a supremely excellent sequel in Evil Dead 2, a widely-adored sorta-sequel in Army of Darkness, and -- in recent months -- has inspired not only a pretty impressive remake (Evil Dead) but also a wonderfully clever homage (The Cabin in the Woods) that has truly struck a chord with the horror film fans.
The flip-side to all of that good stuff is that, logically, The Evil Dead has also inspired a whole lot of independent films that are little more than half-hearted remakes, retreads, or outright ripoffs. The new Swedish import called Wither is none of those things; it feels like a legitimate love letter to the original Evil Dead, and that's certainly cool to see. But after a...

Editor’s note: Rob was so moved by his screening of Wither at the 2013 Stanley Film Festival that he was inspired to present his review in a very special format: as an imagined dialogue between its co-directors Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund. What can I do for you? Sl: I have an idea for our next movie. Tw: Is it the Heidi remake where she’s bitten by a rabid squirrel and then eats her own grandfather? I already told you I wasn’t interested in that one. Sl: No no, it’s better. But we’ll come back to that later. The Stanley Film Festival, which will host its debut fest at the iconic and legendary Stanley Hotel in Colorado from May 2-5, has announced its official feature film line-up, with the Eli Roth-starring earthquake thriller Aftershock taking center stage as the fest’s closing night film.
Roth will be on hand to accept the Inaugural Visionary Award and take part in a Q&A after the film.
“Since his debut on the film festival scene with Cabin Fever in 2002, Eli Roth has become a leading force in the horror genre. A film that I wanted to check out at Fantastic Fest was Memory of the Dead (La Memoria del Muerto). Luckily, I have a screener of the film so I hope to check it out soon. Artsploitation Films will be releasing the film along with Korea’s Horror Stories and a Swedish horror film, which may remind you of Evil Dead, called Wither. I have previously heard of Wither thanks to mrparka on YouTube. While there is no release date listed here, I have included some YouTube trailers (only Wither has English subtitles) to whet your appetite.
