Mostly true to the originals
ofbodin-966-48552023 March 2024
While the action scenes and fighting have gotten a much needed upgrade in terms of fighting with more versatility and better use of their powers, somehow the drawing style looks more... bland at times.

Most characters are true to their original ICONIC appearance, but they really did Magneto dirty. He looks like he's been through a few plastic surgeries since the last time the show aired...

Supposedly the show now has more details, but it still feels like it has less of it at times, and that becomes VERY clear when characters have dialogue with each other and you realize they almost have no facial expressions whatsoever anymore.

Do NOT skimp on the drawing budget of this show. At times during close-ups of characters I counted a maximum of 7 color variations (poor Scott's face has no detail close-up!). I could make more detailed coloring in MS Paint!

That aside there are plenty of scenes where the show has good moments. Great even! Especially the fighting. The characters now have MUCH better teamwork and combinations, and they have excellent versatility in terms of their personal powers AND their individual character traits. It was extremely satisfying to see Storm being given the credit she deserves: "Omega level threat detected!"

All in all I have faith that they won't piss on the legacy that is X-Men. But I have one wish/hope/request as a gay man and here it is: The series of the 90s was great in all ways! It was relatable to anyone, especially people who didn't fit in, because the mutant issue was relatable to EVERYONE who ever felt like a misfit or an outcast. That is why I desperately hope that they do NOT include a bunch of token LGBT characters in the new episodes. I feel like I am overrepresented in every show, movie, series and story already. LGBT people are the new "token black guy" in creative works. DON'T make the same mistake. The original X-men was great because it tackled social issues gracefully and naturally, not by forcing it awkwardly unto people. I've only seen the first episode so far, and thankfully this hasn't happened - yet. But it usually DOES happen with shows these days, and I'm so exhausted by it. I don't want more representation. Just write good stories and draw them well. That's all you need to keep doing for the show to be popular.

I want more!

This was a nice first episode that manages to capture some of the things i expected! Great intro to the characters and the story was set up to get you excited for future episodes!

I loved the style of the show, as it had that nostalgic feel that brought me back to the 90's! However you can still teel the animation is up to date with some fanstatic action sequences with a lot of fluent and organic movements! The colours were great too!

The story itself was captivating and I love their focus on Trask and sentinels, as it is one of my favorite storylines!

It still has to grow on me a bit, but for know this was a surprisinly good first episode!

A confident, energetic start

Warning: Spoilers
As someone who didn't really see much of the original show growing up, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this first episode. The approach this show takes to the continuity, it would seem, between the old and the new is to basically continue where the old roughly left off, but also quickly establish the personalities of each character and their relationships with each other. This makes it so that fans of the old are rewarded for having watched the original and new fans can quickly get up to speed.

Everything about the episode is gleefully corny and cheerful. Characters frequently make dumb jokes, but with such commitment that it works. There's no feeling of desperately trying to impress. The show owns what it is. The episode is awash in the fictional 90s aesthetic as represented in media from that time what with all of the bright colors, upbeat characters, sneering villains, and exuberant locales (there's a night club scene, because of course there is).

The animation, however, is a significant upgrade from the original while still maintaining the bold, over-the-top 90s style. Action scenes feel slick as heck and the characters are drawn with thick outlines and heavy use of shadow. The action choreography has real weight and heft to it while still happening really quickly. Something animation can do really well is create incredibly fluid action scenes and this episode excels at that. The fight with the sentinels at the end is particularly flashy and explosive.

The characters are strong, too. Everyone's base personality is established with incredible ease and even some of the dynamics between certain members (Cyclops and Wolverine still seem to be at it- won't those two ever get along?). Compelling conflicts are immediately presented too, especially for Cyclops who is caught between his desire to continue the X-Men cause and his desire to retire to have a peaceful life as a husband and soon-to-be father. It's a more mature conflict than I'm sure the original had (although I have never seen it so I can't say that for sure!.

I hope the show continues to maintain the fun and enthusiasm of this first episode. Consider me invested and impressed.

And Now, The Continuation....

The X-Men return better than ever! I'll admit I didn't watch the original series but my boyfriend did and he caught me up on what I needed to know before we watched this series.

Everyone knows Wolverine, but others like Gambit, Rogue and even Beast steal the scene. I love that each member of the X-Men has their own time to shine. I like Wolverine as much as the next person but him being the main character in EVERY single live action film was too much so I'm happy he's taking a back seat this time.

That twist at the end though... you could tell things were gonna get serious. Maybe this series will be kid friendly, maybe it won't. Either way I like what I'm seeing so far.

Not Bad. Promising Start.
infinitetyler22 March 2024
I have a lot of the comics from this era, had all the toys, was obsessed with the tv show when I was a kid, etc. Looking back at the series there was a lot of cringe stuff, so I'm forgiving a lot of cringe stuff here as being an attribute of the all-ages comic book genre. Point being, I appreciate the nostalgia, but I don't look at entertainment the same way I did when I was 10.

The story picks up pretty much exactly where the last one left off, and they're introducing a new character, so it's all remaining in line with the original in that regard. The seasons were always several mini-plots made up of a few episodes each and featuring a mutant of the week, and this appears to following the same formula, which imho is a good thing. They found some creative combinations and uses for mutant powers, which let's be real, is what most of wanted.

If you can re-watch and enjoy the original and can look past some of the more eye-roll-inducing "modern audience" updates, then you will probably enjoy X-Men '97. This was mostly just an expository/re-establishing episode, but they hit a lot of the right notes and didn't butcher the characters... now let's see them do that for 9 more episodes.

To Me, My X-Men
Prismark1020 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
X-Men '97 continues from the 1990s X-Men cartoon show.

The animation has been updated, it is more smoother and more detailed. Since the cartoons ended, the X-Men have spawned a successful movie franchise. So it is good that the updated cartoon series has the energy and charm of the movies.

In this cartoon world. Professor X has passed on. The X-Men are slightly in disarray. Logan is not happy with Cyclops leadership style. He and Jean Grey wonder if it is worth staying around now that she is pregnant.

An arrogant rich kid Roberto da Costa is abducted by an anti mutant group, the Friends of Humanity for being a possible mutant.

The X-Men come to his rescue. Thera are surprised to find out that this anti mutant group are using Sentinel technology against them.

The first episode has some world building to do. The reluctant mutant da Costa is very much the audience surrogate. There is an old enemy that drops in at the end which signifies some new challenges to the X-Men.

Why does it looks so bad
inumaster24 March 2024
The old one of the 90s was much better both in animation and in story too !

This Missed the mark ,looks like Disney can't make anything good anymore ... Why does it looks so bad ? Was the animation done by a not smart AI or something ....

the animation It's looks so cringe and weird , the nostalgia alone won't make it for me .

Better just look anime instead than this thing !

This Missed the mark ,looks like Disney can't make anything good anymore .

Are those positive score even real or mostly Paid Bot or something , makes you wonder ?

I saw in twitter / X that most people didn't like this remake .
