The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

Hunt Club
When a young woman (Mena Suvari) breaks up with her girlfriend (Maya Stojan) and is subsequently persuaded to go on a hunting trip with a father and son (Caspar Van Dien and Will Peltz) who witness the incident, nothing is as it seems. They haven’t told her that on this trip, she will be the prey, but there are a few things which she hasn’t told them either. When I met Hunt Club director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, I explained that I’ve seen a lot of films about hunting humans over the years but that I couldn’t recall another one with a female director.
“It was important that we had a female director because of the subject. There was no choice, it could not be a male director. We had everything from a very strong female led team actually: the makeup, the designers, the wardrobe, the production.

Self-consciously tacky effort recalls the classic horror films that made a spectacle of women being murdered and abused
This is frankly a shonky bit of exploitative nonsense that, in a way, recalls the classic horror films that feminist film theorist Carol J Clover wrote about so perceptively in her foundational tome Men, Women and Chainsaws. Such films – in this case, on an island where vile rich men espousing misogynist views hunt down and kill the women they’ve trafficked there – only to turn the tables in the last act when the “final girls” triumph so that female viewers might experience a cathartic thrill of vengeance.
That said, one gets the impression that the film-makers on Hunt Club, starting with screenwriters David Lipper (who has a supporting role here) and John Saunders, and director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, aren’t taking any of this that seriously. The film seems to revel in the low-budget tackiness of it all,...

Sometimes, there comes a movie that is shot on a low budget, but with its riveting dialogue and seriously good acting, it keeps the viewer engaged throughout its entire runtime. Unfortunately, Hunt Club, directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, is not that kind of low-budget movie. It’s apparent that the budget for the film was pretty tight, and they spent most of it getting Mena Suvari and Mickey Rourke on board. The major flaw of the film is the dialogue written by David Lipper and John Saunders. The lackluster acting and editing don’t help elevate the movie at all. Sure, there are campy slasher moments that provide some pulpy fun, but the film doesn’t live up to its decent plot.
The narrative revolves around Cassandra, who befriends a suave gentleman and his son and agrees to go on a unique hunting affair on an island after they tell her about the hefty prize money.

Two years ago, we heard that production was about to wrap on an action horror film called Wolf Mountain, directed by David Lipper and starring Danny Trejo (Machete) and Tobin Bell (Saw). Wolf Mountain had its title elongated as time went by – it’s now known as The Curse of Wolf Mountain – and as of today, the film is available on digital and DVD! You can check it out on Amazon at This Link.
The release of The Curse of Wolf Mountain comes courtesy of Uncork’d Entertainment.
Written by and starring Keli Price (Sleep No More), The Curse of Wolf Mountain centers on Aj (Price), who begins having vivid dreams of his parents’ death. He decides to go back to the spot where they were killed, 20 years ago, accompanied by his brother and his brother’s family. But legend has it there is something mysterious roaming these woods.

In the film written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Collide), a young couple is forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert aboard a rickety plane after an extremist militant group threatens their lives. Piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Hirsch), the plane loses power and crash-lands in the middle of an animal preserve populated by lions, leopards and hyenas. Injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group must fight for their survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive.

What makes a good hunting humans movie? There are a lot of them out there, all, in their own way, reworkings of The Most Dangerous Game. Some of them, like 2018’s The Prey, feature brilliant fight sequences. Others, like 2009’s New Town Killers explore iconic locations. Then there are ones like 2022’s Hounded which have political points to make. Although one might think of them as just a lot of running about, what marks out the best ones is an investment at the casting stage. Hunt Club has made that effort, and it pays off.
Nobody is going to win an Oscar for a film like this. Realistic, nuanced acting is not what’s needed, but charisma matters. Mena Süvari had the wit to handle American Pie and be more than an object in American Beauty; she’s had a few dry years, but she’s still capable of...

"They brought us here to hunt – us." Uncork'd Entertainment has revealed a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Hunt Club, from a British filmmaker named Elizabeth Blake-Thomas. This is being dumped on VOD / DVD in April if anyone is interested in watching anyway. A gripping story of male hunters who lure women to their island with the chance to win $100K in a hunt, only to discover they are the hunted. But this time they have messed with the wrong girls and discover women can be better hunters than men.
