Dick Van Dyke is a Hollywood legend. But he’s not the only entertainer in the family. The Mary Poppins star – who turned 98 on Dec. 13, 2023 – has four kids and multiple grandchildren. Several followed in their dad and granddad’s footsteps with careers both on and behind the screen.

The episode of Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie covering Wolf Creek was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
One of the biggest and some would say overused tropes in horror movies is the killer stalking people in an outdoor setting. The main series for this is, of course, the Friday the 13th series but we have nearly countless other examples to pull from. Sometimes, like today’s entry, or The Burning, these stories and movies can be based on true events and make it even more frightening. Unlike The Burning, which is based on an urban legend with the true story being far from fact, Wolf Creek (watch it Here) had an original script that was tweaked to be based on the real life killers Ivan Milat and Bradley John Murdoch...

While the writers are back at developing projects, film and TV productions have not yet returned in full swing with the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, still on strike. There are a few projects that have been given the go-ahead to start principle photography during this time with a waiver from SAG-AFTRA. This includes a Kevin Smith film titled The 4:30 Movie, as well as some projects from M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana, Sam Raimi and Mel Gibson. According to Deadline, a western starring Ron Pearlman and Esai Morales titled, Cottonmouth, has also started production in Oklahoma with a waiver.
The film stars an ensemble featuring actors Martin Sensmeier, from Westworld, Ron Perlman known for Hellboy, Esai Morales, who can recently be seen in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Eric Nelsen, seen in Paramount+’s 1883, Jonathan Sadowski from Chernobyl Diaries, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who can be seen in Peter Pan & Wendy, James Landry Hébert,...

The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

"It took my son, and I've been fighting him ever since." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for The Devil Below, a new horror film (formerly titled Shookum Hills) from filmmaker / VFX supervisor Brad Parker (director of the very creepy Chernobyl Diaries previously). A geological expedition to an Appalachian sinkhole becomes a fight for survival against a mysterious force. When a team of researchers try to find out how fires started in underground coal mines that have been ablaze for decades, they encounter something much more frightening hiding within. The film stars Alicia Sanz, Adan Canto, Zach Avery, Chinaza Uche, Jesse Latourette, Jonathan Sadowski, and Will Patton. The best part about this is definitely the grizzled Will Patton. It looks a bit like Tremors meets The Descent, which is kind of a thrilling mash-up. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brad Parker's The Devil Below, direct from Vertical's YouTube...

The recent debut of HBO Max has only increased the competition in the streaming wars, and with both WarnerMedia and Disney having launched their own in-house platforms to try and compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime, they’ll have to make do with pre-existing content for the time being as they slowly but surely start to build up their library of original projects.
Obviously, the superhero genre is set to play a huge part in the potential success of both HBO Max and Disney Plus thanks to the hype surrounding the Snyder Cut of Justice League and the shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe respectively, but it’ll be a while before they can match the two market leaders when it comes to the sheer quantity of exclusives.

“The Masked Singer” finale on May 20 will conclude with the crowning of the season 3 winner. Only three of the 18 celebrities in the singing competition remain in contention. They are disguised as the Frog, Night Angel and Turtle. Of this talented trio, the best singer is the man hiding inside the Turtle costume.
We’ve been impressed by Turtle since the first episode, which aired right after the Super Bowl. Since then he has made a lucky seven appearances on the show and is the last contestant from Group A in the hunt for the Golden Mask. We have rewatched all of his performances as well as the clues videos and interviews that he gave to host Nick Cannon. We think that the Turtle is actor and singer Jesse McCartney. Disagree? Take a minute to review our analysis and see how it all fits with Jesse’s life story.

HBO’s dramatic retelling of the very real Russian nuclear disaster, Chernobyl, was designed to be terrifying.
The following contains Chernobyl spoilers.
Before HBO’s gripping mini-series Chernobyl premiered in early May, the audience’s general knowledge of the event it’s named after could probably be split into two categories: those who remembered the nuclear disaster as it happened back in 1986, and those who’ve learned about it via the lens of popular culture. Now that the fifth and final episode of Craig Mazin’s terrifying docu-drama is set to air, no one can really insist on being a part of only one of these groups, and everyone has largely come to the same conclusion.
Chernobyl is purely a horror show that’s based on an even more horrifying reality. The thing is, it’s also designed to be that way. Sure, one could argue that...

Netflix movie The Silence showcases a family’s struggle to survive in a world overrun by carnivorous bats.
The Silence may be coming to the Netflix table with a horror premise that’s likely to evoke accusations of derivativeness, since it appears to be amalgam of two recent genre successes in A Quiet Place and Bird Box. However, the film has a bit of an alibi, since it’s based on the acclaimed 2015 novel of the same name by British horror novelist Tim Lebbon; meaning that, in the very least, its story pre-dates the zeitgeist explosion of those two films.
Regardless, The Silence showcases the ordeal of a family struggling to survive the onset of an apocalypse scenario in which the world is under attack by bat creatures; a survival scenario that – due to the sensitive, sonar-based hearing of bats – necessitates silence at all times, lest one...

A particular sub-set of travel horror exists to scare people away from real-life attractions with no regard for whether any threat actually exists. Films such as The Ruins, Chernobyl Diaries, and As Above, So Below gladly exploit a Mayan temple, the long-abandoned city of Pripyat, Ukraine, and the Paris Catacombs, respectively, as forbidden sites harboring contained evils lying in wait for unsuspecting victims – nevermind that countless tourists have managed to visit these places without incident.
The latest victim of this trend is the Darién Gap, a dense rainforest region located between Panama and Colombia. The area has bedeviled explorers and Pan-American highway developers alike, who have all battled its inhospitable landscape to varying degrees of success. But if Indigenous, a monster movie set in the Darién Gap, has anything to say about, it’s not the harsh terrain, swamps, insects, and other hazards keeping people from the natural wonder – it’s the Chupacabra,...

The 'most profitable' movie of the last 5 years is a horror film - and you'll never guess what it is
The most profitable movies of the last five years? All horror films! At least that's according to the folks over at MoviePilot, who ranked the top 10 based on the films' Return on Investment (Roi) -- i.e. the ratio of a movie's production budget vs. money earned at the worldwide box office. Admittedly, the word "profitable" is a little misleading; Roi is just one (often problematic) way of measuring profitability. Superhero films and other blockbusters rake in more overall, but their Roi's are inevitably lower thanks to much higher production budgets. So what's number one? You'll never guess! Seriously. You will never, ever guess. Here's the Top 10 list: 10. The Last Exorcism ($70M gross vs. $1.8M production budget) 9. Annabelle ($250M vs. $6.5M) 8. Chernobyl Diaries ($38M vs. $1M) 7. Insidious 2 ($162M vs. $5M) 6. The Purge ($91M vs. $3M) 5. Paranormal Activity 3 ($202M vs. $5M) 4. Unfriended ($48M vs. $1M) 3. Paranormal Activity 2 ($177M vs.

Michael Peña's played a wide range of roles in his career, always providing viewers with fully believable characters who enhance the stories they inhabit. His latest onscreen roles—Father Lozano in The Vatican Tapes and Luis in Ant-Man—are no exceptions, and Daily Dead recently had the chance to talk with Michael Peña about playing an exorcism-tasked priest, working with Paul Rudd in the new Marvel movie, and more.
The Vatican Tapes is your first foray into the horror genre. What attracted you to this story?
Michael Peña: For me, it always starts with the script. I remember reading the script—whenever you're feeling scared when you're reading something, when there's a big emotional response, that's always a pretty good thing. And that's what happened on this one. It stuck with me even when I went to bed. I'm friends with Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi—the guys who produced this movie.

Over the last eight years the man has produced a number of chilling features including Chernobyl Diaries The Lords of Salem The Bay and Insidious Chapter 2 (not to mention all of the Paranormal Activity sequels) but hell make his long awaited return to the directors chair this year with another promising handycam feature Area 51.

Clarius Entertainment has acquired Us rights to Benaroya Pictures and The Genre Company’s thriller Cell starring John Cusack (upcoming Love & Mercy, Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Oscar-nominated Samuel L. Jackson (upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service, Django Unchained).
The film is based on the best-selling apocalyptic novel by Stephen King.
When a powerful signal is broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, cell phone users’ minds are instantly and dangerously re-programmed. Heading north through New England in search of his wife and son, Clay Riddell (Cusack) is joined by a group of survivors hoping to fend off the bloodthirsty and hyper-connected “phoners.”
Set to be a wide theatrical release later this year, Cell also stars Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games) and Golden Globe winner Stacy Keach (Nebraska, The Bourne Legacy).
The film is directed by Tod “Kip” Williams (Paranormal Activity 2). The announcement was made today by the film’s producers Michael Benaroya and Richard Saperstein.

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.
We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.
Slated to hit theaters this year,...

1999 seems so far away now. At the fag end of the millennium, it was the year that gave us Stanley Kubrick's posthumous final opus, Britney Spears's first album and Hugh Grant playing the iconic Time Lord in a Doctor Who Comic Relief special. That wretched song 'Blue' by Eiffel 65 was violating our ears. It also saw a micro-budget (reportedly $35k) film creep into UK cinemas on October 22 and change the horror genre forever. The debate rages on whether that was for better or worse.
The Blair Witch Project's financial rewards were huge, with the film grossing $10,931 for every $1 spent according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Yet its cultural impact was arguably more staggering. In an age when the Internet was in its mass-market infancy and mobile phones were a luxury bearing the game Snake, it was felt that the horror genre had nothing new...

One of my fondest memories growing up as a young horrorphile was catching as many scary movies and fright-filled specials as I could during the month of October in order to prepare for Halloween night. With the hundreds of channel options out there for viewers these days, I thought it might be fun to break down where genre fans can catch various movies, specials and even Halloween-themed cartoons over the next 31 days so that you can start planning out your viewings in advance.
Here are some of the thrills and chills coming to your televisions this October. Please keep in mind that full schedules have not been announced everywhere yet, so we’ll be sure to update you guys with any additions to the calendar. All times listed are Et/Pt:

I always start with TCM because you can tell they take such care in developing their lineup. Be sure to check out their Thursday nights. This is truly a unique year for that station.
A quick note: We are not going to be able to get it all. So many different markets and channels and providers… it’s...

Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.
