It's no secret among NBC News insiders that political director Chuck Todd, who also hosts The Daily Rundown on MSNBC, would like a shot at the Meet the Press anchor chair. With ratings for Meet the Press sinking double digits since David Gregory took over in 2008, speculation has swirled that NBC News executives would not wait much longer to make a change. And this morning, out popped the latest blog post predicting Gregory's demise. Politico's Mike Allen — citing “political sources” — declared that Todd's ascension to the seat would be “announced in the coming weeks.” NBC News

Since his apology to Chuck Todd over the promise that "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan," President Obama and his team have been going over a "range of options" to address those who feel they've been disadvantaged by the rollout of Obamacare, even as legislators in Congress form their own competing fixes. On Thursday morning's The Daily Rundown, Todd reported that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-ca) says the President will announce his proposed fix later today.

In hate-praising the Amash amendment's attempt to actually do something (something stupid) about the government's surveillance programs last night, I suggested that an easy solution (that will never happen) to the Nsa's collection of phone bill data would be to require the phone companies to retain the data, rather than destroy it. On Thursday morning's The Daily Rundown, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-ga) explained to Chuck Todd exactly why that sort of solution will never happen.

NBCUniversal‘s cable news network said this month that it will offer “in-depth, continuing coverage” of George Zimmerman’s murder trial, including going live “as news warrants.” This morning’s opening arguments indeed were live on MSNBC — and the network ended up having to apologize for it. No delay was in place as prosecutor John Guy began with a pointed quote from the defendant: “F—ing punks. These assholes always get away.” Chuck Todd, host of MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown and NBC News‘ chief White House correspondent, immediately apologized for the profanity and vowed that the network would deploy a delay going forward. But at least one other uncensored f-word also aired live. This is exactly the kind of scenario NBCU execs had in mind when they asked the FCC last week to consider revamping its policies on broadcast indecency. “The Commission should exempt news, public affairs programming, and...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-ky) is the most recent of 14 Republican Senators to promise a filibuster against the package of gun regulations, including universal background checks, that the Senate is set to consider this week. That filibuster effort has been condemned by everyone from President Obama to his 2008 presidential rival, Sen. John McCcain, but former Rnc Chairman Michael Steele may have launched the most bitter friendly fire yet. On Chuck Todd's The Daily Rundown, Chairman Steele urged those Gop Senators to "At least pretend that you give a damn about what happened."...

The burgeoning scandal surrounding allegations that Senator Robert Menendez (D-nj) traveled to the Dominican Republic to exploit underage prostitutes took another turn on Thursday, as Sen. Menendez responded on camera to those allegations for the first time, and shifted focus, from the conservative blog that first reported the allegations, to the accusers themselves. On MSNBC's The Daily Rundown, NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd played video of the Senator's brief comment, and read a less-than-supportive statement from senior U.S. Senator from New Jersey Frank Lautenberg (D-nj).

As the fallout from the Supreme Court's ruling on President Obama's Affordable Care Act enters its second week, the political media continue to be fascinated by the "Tastes great! Less filling!" debate over whether the individual mandate is a tax or a penalty. While Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has displayed his usual Kama Sutra-esque positional dexterity, Obama Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter laid it all out for The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd this morning.

The expected news came this morning, one day after Ann Curry’s tearful goodbye on Today. Savannah Guthrie‘s upgrade is effective immediately, putting her on the NBC morning show’s anchor team of Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Natalie Morales. The group’s first official show together is July 9. “In just a few short years Savannah has become a standout member of the news division as well as the ultimate team player”, NBC News president Steve Capus said in the release today. “She’s anchored for Brian on NBC Nightly News, moderated for David on Meet The Press, co-hosted the 9 a.m. hour of Today, reported for Rock Center and Dateline, and provided legal insights in our Supreme Court Special Reports – and that was all within the last week! On Wednesday's The Daily Rundown, host Chuck Todd drew a lot out of the candidate with his deceptively easygoing style. Todd asked Romney about the notion that "any president" would have carried out the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and Romney said "I think other presidents and other candidates like myself would do exactly the same thing." Shockingly, Mitt Romney from four years ago sang a completely different tune.

During his interview with The Daily Rundown‘s Chuck Todd, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was asked, for the umpteenth time, to try and talk his way around the individual health insurance mandate that he enacted as Massachusetts Governor, and supported on a national level (although he denies it, he did). While talking in a series of concentric circles, Romney spitballed the idea of having "clinics where people are treated at low cost or no cost" as a solution to federal laws about urgent or emergency care.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace this past weekend, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney completely evaded a question about whether the invasion of Iraq was, in hindsight, a good idea. In a sign of the lightning-fast times, President Obama's chop-busting exchange with Fox News' Ed Henry at Thursday's joint press conference is the star of a new Mitt Romney ad that was released later that same day, and was "exclusively previewed" on Chuck Todd's The Daily Rundown this morning. The ad cobbles together bytes of the President and his advisers saying Romney's name, and as the ad's title suggests, poses them as a sign that the President is "Nervous" about Romney's candidacy.
