For almost 30 years, the Oldenburg Film Festival has been championing a very specific flavor of fiercely independent cinema.
Equally inspired by the New Hollywood genre films of the 1970s and the bootstraps indie cinema of the 1990s, Oldenburg has carved out a niche unlike any of the major international festivals. Instead of playing the same fall festival hits as Cannes, Venice and Toronto, Oldenburg continues to spotlight overlooked or forgotten movies that don’t fit the industry’s familiar categories.
For the 29th festival, which runs Sept. 14-18, The Hollywood Reporter took a look back at five indie gems from Oldenburg’s weird and wonderful history.

‘Fabian – Going to the Dogs’ Review: 3-Hour German Bildungsroman Is More Exhilarating Than It Sounds
Germany is on its postwar sickbed, and perched on the edge of self-destruction, in Dominik Graf’s epically sized yet intimately scaled, cracked picture of Weimar Berlin after WWI, and with omens of the next one creeping in. A 178-minute bildungsroman in the true sense, “Fabian – Going to the Dogs,” shot with primarily handheld digital camera and in the boxed-in Academy ratio, While perhaps padding its running time too robustly with strange and often even grotesque side characters, the movie ultimately falls squarely on Tom Schilling’s shoulders, the idealist of the title who chooses falling in love over ambition.

It’s well known that David Lynch enjoys a damn fine cup of coffee, but the man is serious about his commitment to caffeine: He’s even got his own coffee line.
It makes sense that the filmmaker wouldn’t go the standard celebrity beverage route with a liquor brand — this is a man so serious about coffee that he remembers his first cup at the tender age of three. That’s why he teamed up with Allegro Coffee to create David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee, which comes in both a House and an Espresso blend.
“For me, it’s the flavor. It should have no bitterness, and it should be smooth and rich in flavor,” Lynch said in a 2014 interview discussing his foray into coffee roasting. “I like to drink espresso with milk,...

This year’s German Film Award nominees for best picture include hard-hitting social dramas, tales of romance and cultural divides, family relationships and musical icons as well as works by a growing number of filmmakers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The German Film Academy, forced to revamp its 70th German Film Awards ceremony due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, will honor the country’s most acclaimed films during a special live TV presentation on April 24.
The German Film Awards ceremony, which in the past aired pre-recorded on Zdf, will be broadcast live for the first time on Ard’s Das Erste, due in part to its remade and shortened presentation. Doing away with its traditional gala event, the show will instead include guest filmmakers, musicians and presenters taking part via video feed from their homes.

“Pink Rabbit,” an adaptation of the memoir of author and illustrator Judith Kerr — best-known for “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” — about her family’s flight from Germany as the Nazis rose to power, will have a wide release in Germany via Warner Bros. Sales agent Beta Cinema has pre-sold the film to Rai Cinema/01 (Italy), A Contracorriente (Spain), Huanxi Media Group (China), Moviecloud (Taiwan) and Blitz (former Yugoslavia).
Also on Beta’s slate is “Lara,” by Jan-Ole Gerster (“A Coffee in Berlin”), which piqued distributors’ interest following its premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it won the Special Prize of the Jury and best actress for Corinna Harfouch.

What a difference a day makes. Allowing one’s characters to move from narrative point A to narrative point B in the same amount of time it takes for the Earth to spin 360 degrees should be an arbitrary undertaking, like having a film where everyone wears hats or can’t remember the Beatles, but that simple constraint has fired more than a few great filmmaker’s creative engines over the years. Spike Lee used a hot one as a pressure cooker. Linklater seems obsessed with the form. The limitation seems to ease some primal craving for order and patterns. They can also be a lot of fun.

He's finally back with another film! German filmmaker Jan Ole Gerster earned himself a modest following with his first feature debut, a B&w film from 2012 titled A Coffee in Berlin (also known as Oh Boy). The film is a cult classic because it's known as pretty much the definitive film about life in modern Berlin today, what it's like and how it feels and everything. Jan Ole Gerster is finally back on the scene with his second feature film, titled Lara, which is premiering back-to-back at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival then the Munich Film Festival this summer. It's another outstanding film from Gerster, and another outstanding character study, a portrait of a mother dealing with her thoughts and emotions and feelings on her 60th birthday. I just hope we don't have to wait seven more years for Gerster's next film, because he's a seriously talented filmmaker. Gerster's Lara,...

German filmmaker Jan-Ole Gerster made a major splash with his critically acclaimed and award-heavy 2012 debut feature “Oh Boy” (“A Coffee in Berlin”), starring Tom Schilling (“Never Look Away”). In Gerster’s latest film, “Lara,” Corinna Harfouch portrays a woman, who, on her 60th birthday, plans to attend the premiere of piano concerto performed by her estranged son, played by Schilling.
Gerster spoke to Variety about the origins of the project, why Harfouch’s involvement was essential, re-teaming with Schilling, and the significant role of music in the film.
While currently focused on the launch of his new film at home and abroad, Gerster is pursuing as a possible next project an adaptation of Christan Kracht’s best-selling novel “Imperium.” Inspired by a true story, the book follows passionate German nudist August Engelhardt as he travels to German New Guinea in 1902 to set up a coconut farm and commune on a remote South Seas island.

‘Lara’ is simultaneously premiering at the Munich and Karlovy Vary film festivals.
German director Jan-Ole Gerster’s debut film Oh Boy (which was released as A Coffee In Berlin in the Us ) was a surprise critical and audience hit in 2012. The absurdist comedy following an aimless man wandering the streets of Berlin was his thesis film at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (Dffb). It certainly marked out Gerster as a director to watch, premiering at Karlovy Vary and winning him the best debut film prize at the European Film Awards.
Seven years later and Gerster is back with his much-anticipated second feature Lara.

Oh boy, Senran Kagura is back with another fantastically unashamed title. Our favorite female shinobi are donning their swimsuits, grabbing water guns, and making each other wet. I can’t think of a better scenario for the series’ first shooter, Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash.
Just like in Estival Versus, things begin with the girls from four shinobi schools getting warped to an isolated island. Mysterious hosts of a NewTube channel (who are clearly teachers from the games) announce that no one can leave until the Peach Beach Splash tournament is finished. It’s overly simple, but hey, how many people are really playing Peach Beach Splash for the plot?

‘Justice League‘ is a little over 2 months away from release, and yet we are still learning about the film. We have seen a number of trailers for the film, but then in a shocking piece of news, it was announced that Joss Whedon would be taking over for Zack Snyder to complete the film. This created a great amount of controversy, although the film had been undergoing reshoots at the time of the shuffle.
We recently heard a rumor that Jessie Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor had been cut as a result of the changes to the film. We also know that Ben Affleck‘s portrayal of Batman in ‘Justice League‘ would change dramatically from ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘. A character that we haven’t heard much about is Henry Cavill‘s Superman. Well now, a recent post by Movieweb (via Reddit), shows a recent toy release for...

Rarely have I heard anyone in real life say, 'Oh boy, I'm going to a reunion with old friends and I can't wait!' Instead, it's more like an event to be survived. But that's real life. Films allow us to reshape reunions into momentous occasions, or, instead into the basis for a mystery thriller like The Reunion, which quickly establishes a foreboding atmosphere in its trailer. So we're pleased to present a first look at the poster, which you can enjoy in its full glory below. And then scroll down to watch the trailer. The Reunion "follows three friends from high school who reunite ten years later for a weekend getaway," according to the official verbiage. "During their getaway, a secret from their high school...

There are some old adages Oprah takes very seriously.
“I’ve done many interviews with people who had to lose what they had in order to value what they still have,” she tells Veranda in their September/October 30th Anniversary issue. “Sometimes I stand under the arbor, close my eyes, and allow myself to take in as much as I can: I hear birds splashing in the fountain and literally smell the roses. This garden makes me present.”

"People got dead up there for real!" Oh boy, here we go again... Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for the newest Tyler Perry joint, another Madea comedy (sequel) titled Boo 2! A Madea Halloween. This is, obviously enough, a sequel to the goofy Halloween comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween release just last year. Tyler Perry not only returns to write and direct, but also star again as Madea (and Joe and Brian). The cast includes Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Chandra Currelley, Yousef Erakat, Diamond White, Lexy Panterra, and Andre Hall. The plot involves Madea, Bam & Hattie going to a haunted campground where they find monsters, goblins, and the boogeyman. As much as I have absolutely no interest in these movies, I have to give them props on the amusing poster design. Other than that, if you want to watch then go ahead. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween,...

James Bond fans are split on whether Daniel Craig — reported to be returning as 007 — is a good thing. Some fans celebrated the news on social media on Tuesday, while others said his “time is just up.” “As a Huge Bond fan, it kills me to say that I am not excited about Daniel Craig being in the next film. He was great. His time is just up,” wrote one user. “Oh boy, they dragged Daniel Craig back for another go at a role he hates in a series he has nothing but distain for. Hooray,” wrote another. MaryAnn’s quick take… The hint of a seed of a bitter satire is buried under inept, momentum-free comedy. They should have developed the script’s rough first draft instead of shooting it. I’m “biast” (pro): like Amy Poehler
I’m “biast” (con): not generally a fan of studio comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Somewhere, buried so deep within The House that even it doesn’t seem to know that it is there, is the glimmer of the hint of the seed of a dark, bitter satire on collapsing America, on the suburban malaise and economic anguish that has driven the nation collectively to despair. Desperate parents start an underground casino to pay their daughter’s college tuition, descending into a life of crime and violence that rips the veneer of respectability off the upscale McMansion lifestyles of them and their neighbors.

Rejoice! Only one more month until new episodes of “Rick and Morty.”
Adult Swim released the first full look at Season 3 on Thursday, complete with the long-awaited confirmation that the intergalactic adventures of the title characters will indeed return on July 30.
With this show, anthropomorphized food is par for the course, so it’s no surprise that this sneak peek at Season 3 starts with a meme-ready intro of the newly christened Pickle Rick. There’s also colorful chaos, graphic dismemberment and whatever gave Morty that murderous Mr. Universe arm — you know, typical “Rick and Morty” stuff.

And it looks like most of the show’s cast of characters are making return visits as well. Filling out the rest of the Sanchez family tree, Jerry and Beth are back for more mayhem.
