Jerry Springer, the former Cincinnati news anchor and mayor who came to preside over the controversial and extremely profitable talk show bearing his name, has died. He was 79.
According to NBC affiliate Wlwt, where he once worked as a news anchor, Springer died peacefully Thursday at his home in the Chicago suburbs.
“The Jerry Springer Show” began its multi-decade run in 1991 and, in 1998 at the height of its popularity, beat “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in the ratings, drawing 12 million viewers.
Like Geraldo Rivera, Springer signed on for a show that he thought seemed like the logical next step in his journalism career — a show not unlike “Donahue” that would take a serious look at a variety of important issues. But as with “Geraldo,” the pressure to score big in the ratings pretty quickly meant appealing to the lowest common denominator — Springer and his new producer, Richard Dominick, who’d worked at the Weekly World News,...

Apparently not everyone wants to keep up with Kris Jenner. The momager’s daytime talk show, ‘Kris’, will not be returning in 2014, Fox announced in a statement on Jan. 17. However, there is a strong possibility that the show could be back on the air in 2015.
Kris Jenner’s show, Kris, is getting shelved, after a short six-week run in the summer of 2013. But thankfully the Keeping Up with the Kardashians matriarch still has a chance of making a comeback with Kris or another similar project in the future, according to Fox.

The 2013 Bet Awards aired live at the Nokia Theatre L.A in Los Angeles on June 30 but it wasn't anything that went down on stage that appears to have caused the most controversy.
Prior to the ceremony, the network aired coverage of the Ford Red Carpet featuring B. Scott and singer Adrienne Bailon, Clutch Magazine notes.
B. Scott, a contributing editor to The Glam Network and an Ebony Magazine advice columnist, is known for his witty words and style. In 2010, he shared his coming out story via his popular YouTube account.
After the Bet awards, Scott took to his Twitter account to address tweets about Bet allegedly making him change his wardrobe and remove his heels and lipstick, as News One reports.

Well, we know who is definitely not the next Oprah. That person is Ricki Lake, whose "The Ricki Lake Show" was canceled Monday after one season. The show first premiered last September but, according to Reuters, couldn't stand up to competition from Katie Couric, Jeff Probst and Anderson Cooper. Cooper didn't do so well either, with his show also ending after its current season.
This was Lake's second journey into daytime television. Her first talk show, "Ricki Lake," ran for 11 seasons, before she made the call to end it, in order to spend time with her family.
In a statement, Lake says, "I am so proud of the shows we completed this season." She plans to return to documentary film making with business partner Abby Epstein, saying, "I am excited to create meaningful and provocative films similar to our 2007 project, 'The Business of Being Born.'"...

No surprise here — Twentieth Television just announced that its struggling freshman syndicated talker The Ricki Lake Show will not be renewed for the 2013-2014 season. Original episodes will continue to air through the end of the season. Along with CBS TV Distribution’s Jeff Probst, Ricki Lake never found an audience to support it in the long run as the two faced a glut of new talk shows last fall. A similar announcement for Jeff Probst should be coming soon. “While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life-after the military, divorce, and addiction we were simply not able to breakthrough the crowded talk show marketplace,” Stephen Brown, Twentieth TV’s Evp of programming & development said. While Ricki Lake was a disappointment, Twentieth TV did well with freshman syndicated strip Dish Nation, which was recently renewed for a second season after scoring well with young demos.

Gail Steinberg, who was the co-creator and Ep on Ricki Lake’s original talk show during the 1990s, is returning to become executive producer of the freshman talker The Ricki Lake Show, effective immediately. Lisa Kridos, who was Ep, is exiting to become a programming and development producer for the show’s distributor Twentieth Television. Steinberg is currently Ep of Divorce Court, daytime’s longest-running court show, and was a consultant and co-produced this year’s Ricki Lake pilot. “Gail will usher in a fresh perspective bringing in an added relevancy, fun and energy to each episode, while showcasing compelling viewpoints to the female focused topics that remain at the core of the new Ricki Lake Show,” Twentieth Evp Programming and Development Stephen Brown said. Ricki Lake has gotten off to a slow ratings start among the freshman pack of daytime talkers, owning partly to a Tribune-Cablevision carriage dispute that...

Her babies have turned into big boys — Milo is 15 and Owen is 11 — but Ricki Lake is still reaping the benefits of giving birth.
“That high is something I will never forget. The feeling that, ‘If I can do this, I can do anything,’ has stayed with me through the years,” The Ricki Lake Show host, 44, tells Scholastic Parent & Child in their October issue.
“I’ve gotten through a really difficult divorce, I’ve taken all these steps in my career, and I did Dancing with the Stars, which was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done!

If you're a daytime talk show host who isn't Ellen DeGeneres, you probably spend most of your day thinking of ways to prove you should exist. While The View and The Talk cook up minor controversies and coups from time to time, the daytime talk show format is so staid and familiar that it's hard to imagine anyone breakthing through as an original voice. Strangely, four familiar faces are dishing out new talk shows this season (and Anderson Cooper has revamped his daytime offering to include a rotating set of co-hosts), so we find ourselves with five opportunities to hail the next Oprah. Using a complex grading rubric and simple addition, we'll see who (if any) of these talkers is destined for the big leagues.

Los Angeles — Ricki Lake was a babe in the talk show woods when her syndicated program launched nearly two decades ago.
Looking back at the 24-year-old actress she was then, Lake pronounces the 1993 career move "a little bit presumptous," although "Ricki Lake" quickly won over a young-adult audience that wanted a peppy take on life and love from someone like them.
"I didn't know what I was signing up for. I didn't know how to host a show. I didn't know who I was or have a point of view. I basically was grateful to have the job," recalls Lake. "I thought, `Great, I can pay my rent for six months.'"
Lake, who turns 44 this month, has been changed by marriage, children, divorce and remarriage. So have her ambitions for her return to the daytime arena with "The Ricki Lake Show," debuting Monday (check local listings).

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Fresh from her second marriage (in April) and a monthlong honeymoon in Spain, Ricki Lake met the critics at TCA in advance of her second go-around in the syndicated daytime talk wars. Twentieth TV’s The Ricki Lake Show joins the battle on September 10, cleared in 99.5% of the country. She’ll be entering a crowded chat market that includes fellow newcomers Katie Couric, Jeff Probst and Steve Harvey. Unlike those three, Lake has been down this road before, having had a mega-successful 11-year run (1993-2004) with her previous daytime talker. Lake began that one at the tender age of 24. Now she’s 43, hardened by life, once-divorced and the mother to two school-age kids. “I really want lightning to strike twice,” Lake said during a lunch panel. “There’s a lot of pressure, a lot of money invested in this show. But I...

She's got a new job, a new man (husband of three months Christian Evans) and, yes, an active sex life, but ask talk show host Ricki Lake what she's wishing for these days and she admits: "I'd like to lose 10 pounds - just like everyone." "I'm not fat, and I'm not a size 4," says Lake, 43, who's between a size 6 and 8. "I'm constantly working every day not to beat myself up for it." Assessing herself, Lake, who returns to daytime on her weekday, nationally syndicated The Ricki Lake Show, set to premiere Sept. 10, says: "I'm definitely not in as good as...
