- Miniature Dachshund Dox E. Dog is lost on the streets of New York, befriending a group of other lost or stray dogs. While hanging out with a growing group of strays, he is smitten when he sees Ann E. Dog in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.
- New York City - 1979: the streets are filled with roving bands of stray dogs who are fighting amongst themselves for a piece of territory. Into the fray comes Dox E. Dog, a Miniature Dachshund who got separated from his owner in Brooklyn on a trip from California. Dox befriends several other misfit strays who are being bullied by more aggressive dogs. Among his new friends are an English Bulldog, a German Shepherd, and a Miniature Pinscher. After hooking up with their mutual friend Angela, a Boston Terrier, and twin Chihuahuas, Isabella and Roberta, while playing in Prospect Park, Dox sees the "homebody" dog Ann, a Poodle who lives in a tony brownstone in the upscale area of Park Slope, Brooklyn. Dox convinces the other strays to follow Ann, but they balk since homebodies and strays don't mix. However, Ann comes out on the balcony of her room to talk to the others and discovers the hidden dangers of living on on the streets.
