"Es war einer von uns" means "It was one of us" and is about the struggles of a young woman after she gets raped by one of her closest friends. Until the very ending we do not know who did it and maybe it would have been even better if they had not solved this question finally. This way the film really could have been more about dealing with the situation than dealing with the one who did it, which I personally find the more interesting approach. And I did not have enough curiosity to find out who was it anyway.
The movie was made by Kai Wessel, fairly prolific in terms of television and cinematic work already. The script came from Astrid Ströhner. We see how the protagonist meets sympathy from police and friends, but also criticism as she happens to blame those who did not do it (and their closest). However, they were also victims because of false accusations and an intrusion into their private lives. I suspected Striesow's character from the beginning and it looks like that for a long time. Striesow is probably also the most known cast member. The central character is played by Maria Simon, who you may have seen on "Good Bye Lenin!". Also I suspected her to get pregnant. Wrong again. Nonetheless, it would have been an interesting development of playing with the viewer's mind, if Striesow had turned out to be the one who did it in the end. The rest of the cast is fine too. Not too known outside of Germany probably, but all actors with a respectable body of work. The writer/director team received some honors and so did Simon.
All in all, it is a good film. One of its strengths is the unpredictability. It's a good watch and very essential at only roughly 80 minutes running time, certainly better than most German television films these days. Recommended.
