Charley went toe to toe with the Jacob Boudreaux, Ralph Angel and Darla got closer, and Aunt Vi reopened the High Yellow on Queen Sugar Season 1 Episode 11.
Our TV Fanatics, Jasmine, Lee, and Christine O., are here to debate whether Charley is moving too fast with Remy, if they want Darla or Ms. Velez with Ralph Angel and just how nasty the Landrys and Boudreauxs will get after “All Good.”
How do you think the Landrys and Boudreauxs will try to mess with the Bordelons?
Jasmine: I'm scared to even think about it after hearing how awful they were decades before. They're definitely going to ice the Bordelons out of everything by using their power and reputation to blackball them.
Lee: I'm having horrific visions of literal scorched earth, as in, if we can't have the land, you're not going to have it either. I can totally see the Landrys...

Every week, the CriticWire Survey asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of the late Anton Yelchon, who was killed in a tragic accident early Sunday morning, which was your favorite of his performances?
Christopher Campbell (@thefilmcynic), Nonfics
It’s definitely not his best movie, and maybe it’s not really technically his best acting, but my favorite of Yelchin’s performances is in “Terminator Salvation.” You could tell he tried to sound like Michael Biehn in “The Terminator” in his portrayal of young Kyle Reese, and that meant a lot to me as a fan of these movies. And it shows how much he took care in his work...

Review by Andrew McArthur
Kat Candler’s Hellion boasts some strong performances but ultimately feels like an amalgamation of various indie tropes that never quite hit the right emotional spot.
Texas-set Hellion follows widowed single father Hollis (Aaron Paul) who finds himself on the verge of losing his two sons to Child Protection Services after eldest son Jacob’s (Josh Wiggins) unruly behaviour attracts the attention of the police.
It seems that films revelling in Southern miserablism are all the rage recently with Mud, Joe and The Devil’s Knot all looking at the hard lives of the vulnerable people in the South of the USA. Perhaps the reason I draw this comparison is because Hellion shares so much in common with these...

Jacob Wilson is a troubled kid. Like many teenagers, he's a rebel without a pause, constantly battling the adults in his life while figuring out who he is. But adolescent battles are far worse for Jacob than for most 13 year olds; his life can be as noisy, chaotic and dangerous as the motocross races he enters for a shot at stardom and a little respect from his family and friends.
Jacob (Josh Wiggins) is at the center of Hellion, Austin filmmaker Kat Candler's gritty new feature based on her 2012 short of the same title. We can't really blame Jacob for being the titular troublemaker. His mother is dead; his alcoholic father, Hollis (Aaron Paul), tries to take care of his sons, but needs to try harder. With his father physically or emotionally absent much of the time, Jacob must look after his little brother, Wes (Deke Garner). He also...

Hellion is the feature-film debut for writer and director Kat Candler. With this film, Candler certainly has my full attention and should have yours as well. Few filmmakers can make such a powerful and meaningful statement — and do so successfully — on their first outing, but the term “rookie” would be gravely misused in its traditional context on such a filmmaker.
Aaron Paul, most notably recognized as Jessie from the television series Breaking Bad, portrays Hollis Wilson, a hard working father struggling to raise his two sons on his own. After his wife and mother of his boys died, times got tough and Hollis slipped into an alcoholic state as a means to cope. Meanwhile, his 13-year old son Jacob, played by Josh Wiggins, heads down a dangerously deviant path. In his first feature film, Wiggins shines. Boys of Summer: Candler’s Latest Effort a Meandering Glance at Troubled Youth
If there’s anything as frequently explored as the ‘coming of age’ archetype in independent American cinema, it has to be the tried and true dilemma of troubled youths amidst familial trauma or dysfunction. Ere goes, the multitudinous examples sometimes obscure each other, and such is the case with Kat Candler’s first feature since 2006, Hellion, which is an agitatingly stretched out version of an earlier short film from the director. Audiences will most likely compare the film to 2012’s Mud, and oddly enough, director Jeff Nichols shows up as producer here. While there’s nothing innately wrong with Candler’s careful exploration of a troubled youth discovering the necessity and wisdom of doing the right thing, despite a pair of laudable performances, the essence of the film feels stagnantly predestined.

An expansion of a short she premiered at Sundance in 2012, Kat Candler’s third feature, Hellion, made a splash at this year’s festival, with particular praise lavished on its breakout lead actor, Josh Wiggins. The latter (whom Candler discovered through some videos he and his friends posted on YouTube) plays Jacob, a very, very angry thirteen-year-old wreaking delinquent havoc in his East Texas small town. He lives with younger brother Wes (Deke Garner) and father Hollis (Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul), who’s been struggling with the bottle since his wife’s sudden death—a trauma they’re all coping with badly, in different ways. When the destructive rampages Jacob and his juvenile posse go on get out of hand, it begins to look like this fragile family may suffer yet more separation: Child Protective Services could well award custody of young Wes to Aunt Pam (Juliette Lewis). With...

Writer/director Kat Candler’s Hellion paints the powerful portrait of a family on the brink of dissolution set against the haunting backdrop of the refineries of Southeast Texas.
Starring Aaron Paul, Josh Wiggins and Juliette Lewis, Sundance Selects will release Hellion in New York (and on VOD platforms) on June 13th and Los Angeles on June 20th.
Obsessed with heavy metal, dirt bike racing and partaking in the occasional act of vandalism with his band of delinquents, the behavior of 13-year-old Jacob Wilson (Josh Wiggins in his feature film debut) has begun to raise concerns around town, especially when it starts to involve his younger brother Wes (newcomer Deke Garner). While the boys’ father Hollis (two-time Emmy Award-winner Aaron Paul) loves his sons, he is still reeling from the loss of their mother, spending more time drowning his sorrows at the local bar and working on his damaged beach...

Kat Candler expands her short film of the same name to feature-length with Hellion, in which she explores the warm-tinted indie trend of faux-nostalgia for small Southern towns, where the ruffians – or hellions – learn to be men. Subplots abound in this tale of men on the Texan coastline, but there’s no strong central plot to be found. Aaron Paul plays Hollis Wilson, a grieving husband who’s lost his wife and is trying to keep custody of his two sons. Paul brings a level of emotional depth to the character that audiences have come to expect from the Breaking Bad actor, but it’s really 15-year-old Josh Wiggins who steals the show – in his first film to date – as the older son, Jacob. Deke Garner and Juliette Lewis round out the cast as Wes, the younger brother, and Pam, the boys’ aunt. A combination of Hollis’s parental absence and Jacob’s delinquent behavior eventually exposes...

In writer-director Kit Candler's debut feature, the actors do powerful work despite a screenplay whose plotting often feels forced and schematic.
Thirteen-year-old Jacob (Josh Wiggins) has been put on juvenile probation in his small Texas town for vandalizing a truck, an act of fury fueled by grief over the recent death of his mother. His father, Hollis (Aaron Paul), barely notices, and instead keeps running off to Galveston to work on the dream house he never finished for his late wife.
That leaves Jacob to look after the little brother (Deke Garner) who worships him. The boys are angry at Hollis for having briefly abandoned them after their mother died, but like so much of Candler's plot turns, including the inevitable appearance of a gun, Hollis's failings aren't en...

Consequently, Jacob finds himself fending for himself as well as his little brother, but his acting out antics ultimately lead Child Protection Services to place Wes with their aunt (Juliette Lewis). Despite having two household names attached to the production, the feature-length version of Hellion showcases two extremely talented young actors: Josh Wiggins (Jacob) and Deke Garner (Wes). Like the short film, Hellion relishes in the youthful ecstasy of absolute freedom and the inherent wildness of boys when left to their own devices as well as highlighting the irresponsible choices that they tend to make. Kat Candler (Cicadas, Jumping Off Bridges, Black Metal) has an undeniable talent for creating very specific atmospheres within her films. Shot in the hazy sunshine of the Gulf Coast, Hellion captures the difficulties of a single, working class parent, carefully examining the effects that local economics can have on families. The gritty, handheld cinematography (Brett Pawlak) hearkens back to the glory days of 1970s American independent cinema while also reflecting the working class livelihoods of this East Texas community. Here is the debut trailer for Hellion,...

A feature length expansion of her 2012 short film, Kat Candler’s Hellion is a wrenching, slow-burn tale of a family in free-fall. Hollis (Aaron Paul) isn’t much of a father to his two young sons, Jacob (Josh Wiggins) and Wes (Deke Garner). He’s damaged goods, stumbling through a cloud of depression and despair to reengage with life after the sudden unexpected death of his wife. He works long days at one of the many oil refineries that pollute his East Texas town, spends his evenings self-medicating with beer, leaving his boys to generally fend for themselves. (Linc Leifeste's Full Review) We sat down with writer/director Kat Candler at SXSW Film for this conversation:...

Whereas some filmmakers begin with short films, make their first feature and never turn back, Kat Candler has chosen to maintain a balance between the two formats and for good reason, too. As she explained, “I’ve learned probably the most from doing short films and I’ve developed my voice the most through doing short films, not through features.” And after seeing her latest feature, “Hellion,” you’ll absolutely take her word for it. The story centers on Jacob (Josh Wiggins), a 13-year-old living in Southeast Texas with his little brother Wes (Deke Garner) and their father Hollis (Aaron Paul). Even though Hollis loves his sons dearly, he’s still feeling the effects [ Read More ]

It's a testament to Paul's performance and director Kat Candler's strong writing and direction that the viewer never judges Hollis too harshly. Josh Wiggins delivers a revelatory performance as the titular hellion, a 13-year-old whose rebellion has gone well beyond the harmless norm into full blown juvenile delinquency,...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Local writer and director Kat Candler returned to Sundance Film Festival for her third consecutive year, with the feature-length version of Hellion. In 2012 Candler debuted the short that served as the basis for this dramatic feature, and in 2013 her short film Black Metal screened at the fest and online.
Hellion stars Aaron Paul as Hollis Wilson, a disconsolate widower raising his sons Jacob (Josh Wiggins) and Wes (Deke Garner) with the support of his sister Pam (Juliette Lewis). The boys are left without supervision most of the time, with Jacob engaging in delinquent acts around their southeast Texas town of Port Neches and Wes insistent on tagging along. After Jacob's actions result in his younger brother being taken from their home, he must overcome his anger and pain from his father's abandonment and mother's death to repair the tenuous bonds that hold the Wilson men together.

Aaron Paul in “Hellion”
Hellion
Written and directed by Kat Candler
USA, 2014
Based on Kat Candler’s short film of the same name, Hellion concerns itself with adolescent boys who have the weight of the world on their shoulders and are left to themselves to sort repressed feelings out. It’s a movie littered with beer cans, guns, and thoughtless behavior, yet it is also about coming around to responsibility and not letting bad circumstances take everything from you.
Unable to deal with his wife’s death and the devastation of his home in Galveston, Texas by a tornado, Hollis Wilson (Aaron Paul) drinks away his sorrow. His obvious love for his sons Jacob (newcomer Josh Wiggins) and Wes (Deke Garner) comes through but his choice to not clean the house, keep track of their behavior, or nurture them is slowly disintegrating the family. Jacob starts to vandalize property and get into fights.

Among the glitz and overloaded chaos of Sundance, breakout stars emerge, fueling the reputation of the festival’s force as a discovery engine. This year, one of the most talked-about young actors is 15-year-old Josh Wiggins, who stars alongside Aaron Paul in director Kat Candler’s third feature “Hellion.” The film—which grew out of Candler’s 2012 short of the same name—features Paul and Wiggins as father and son Hollis and Jacob, still reeling from the death of Jacob’s mother a year earlier. Devastated, repressed and angry, neither has been able to properly express his grief: the ill-equipped Hollis has turned to alcohol and denial, while Jacob—along with his ragtag crew of latchkey comrades—has become a destructive delinquent, and a harmful influence on his younger brother Wes (Deke Garner). With the family hurtling towards crisis, social workers and Hollis’s sister-in-law Pam (Juliette Lewis) step in...

Hellion, the new drama from Kat Candler, is one angry and emotional film. From the opening moments till the credits rolled, this movie channels adolescent rage, loss, and the struggles of life into one intense experience that will play with your emotions.

One day, Child Protective Services arrives and removes Wes, taking her to live with Aunt Pam (Juliette Lewis), and both Jacob and his father try and deal with their issues in order to bring him back.

Aaron Paul, Kat Candler, and Josh Wiggins (centered) with Dylan Cole, Deke Garner, and Camron Owens.
Hellion, written and directed by Kat Candler, is an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of Hollis, a single dad (Aaron Paul) who is struggling to raise his sons in a Southeast Texas town. Newcomer Josh Wiggins makes a powerful debut as Jacob, a 13-year-old who loves motocross and heavy metal, whose delinquent behavior is about to send him to juvenile detention. Still grieving from the death of his wife, Hollis spends most of his time drowning his sorrows at the bar, so Jacob and his little brother Wes must fend for themselves. There are those bright young people that won’t apply themselves because their schoolwork is not challenging, and others who don’t focus well in a classroom setting and therefore seem less intelligent than they actually are. Few actors nail the inner torment of blue-collar fuck-ups quite like Aaron Paul. His eyes do much of the work in his new Sundance drama, Hellion, from writer-director Kat Chandler, as he plays Hollis, a recent widower in small-town Southeast Texas too overwhelmed to care for his two delinquent sons, ages 13 and 10. Expanded from Chandler’s 2012 Sundance-selected short, Hellion is told from the perspective of 13-year-old Jacob (astoundingly good newcomer Josh Wiggins), who turns to arson and unsupervised Motocross racing, dragging his little brother into his hooliganism, as their father disappears, emotionally and physically. Social services steps in and both of the elder members of the all-male family have to wake up to the possibility that they might lose 10-year-old Wes (sweet newcomer Deke Garner). “There’s a desperate intensity in Paul’s eyes as Hollis scrambles, without any kind of a plan, to set aside his wounds and keep...

Life is certainly not easy in the East Texas community where Hollis (Aaron Paul) is raising his two young sons, Jacob (Josh Wiggins) and Wes (Deke Garner). A former baseball hero, Hollis struggles to make ends meet by working in one of the oil refineries that pollute the periphery of the screen. This job is the only one that his economically devastated hometown has to offer. Still an emotional wreck from the death of his wife, Hollis drowns his sorrows in a steady stream of Real Ale Fireman's 4. Other than his alcoholic tendencies, however, Hollis is far from the stereotypical white trash male that we see in films. Hollis is a thoughtful and sensitive man who is too distracted by missing his wife to give Jacob and Wes the attention they require. He would much rather keep himself busy by rebuilding their hurricane-ravaged house in Galveston than be an attentive...

Sundance has always been an interesting blend of new and old; domestic and international; star power and new faces. In the last 24 hours, the two movies that struck the loudest chord with me come from young filmmakers, and that couldn’t make me happier.
Kat Candler’s “Hellion” and Jeremy Saulnier’s “Blue Ruin” are spectacular films, movies that you’ll be talking about for months to come — the best of the fest so far. At the same time, a Sundance fave took a stumble last night with the premiere of Lynn Shelton’s “Laggies” while the Netflix-debuting doc “Mitt” disappoints and competition film “Fishing without Nets” strains under the weight of its melodrama. And then there’s “The Guest.” Well, we’ll get there. Strap in.

Sundance Film Festival continues to be one of the most popular, and arguably one of the most important, events on the industry calendar, launching as it does some of the most prominent independent films at the start of each year.
This year will be no different, with Sundance announcing last night the initial line-up of films screening in competition, led by Song One, starring Anne Hathaway; Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart; Infinitely Polar Bear, with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana; Joe Swanberg’s Happy Christmas, starring Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, and Swanberg himself; The Skeleton Twins, with Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, and Ty Burrell; Life After Beth, with Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, and John C. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival is coming up in January and today, the Sundance Institute has named the films that will be in the U.S. and world competitions as well as Next, which is an oddly-named showcase for “Pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling.”
There will be 67 films competing across five different competition categories. That may sound like a lot, but that’s only the first half of the film announcements. Later on they will be announcing the remaining lineup of films being shown outside these competitions.
Overall, it’s an impressive batch of entries, with several surprises and a handful of very promising movies. Check out the full list below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

I don’t think Drake Doremus will be at Sundance this year. Here’s hoping that Kat Candler makes a “repeat” into a three-peat. Director of highly praised Sundance shorts Hellion (2012) (see pic above) and Black Metal (2013), Candler might belong to an exclusive club of folks. The same year that the short got invited to Park City, her producer Kelly Williams become an invited 2012 Sundance creative producing lab fellow with the feature length project of the same title (see trailer to get an idea of what it might turn out like). Flash forward to 2014, and Hellion might be that feature length Sundance preemed film that has roots as a Sundance accepted short film. In late August the trades spit out the news that Aaron Paul and Juliette Lewis climbed on board the drama – so it’ll be tight to get this before the deadline. Short Term 12 cinematographer Brett Pawlak shot the film.
