Exclusive: Battlestar Galactica alumna Tricia Helfer has been cast as the lead in TNT’s drama pilot Scent Of The Missing. Veteran Gerald McRaney will co-star in the project, co-written/executive produced by CSI maven Carol Mendelsohn, Melissa R. Byer and Treena Hancock based on the book by Susannah Charleson. Scent Of The Missing centers on Susannah (Helfer), a tenacious, strong-willed K-9 Search and Rescue volunteer who works with an equally determined partner — her mischievous golden retriever, Puzzle. McRaney will play her father, Jerry. The dog has not been cast yet. CBS Television Studios is producing the pilot, with Barry Josephson and Julie Weitz also executive producing. Helfer, who co-starred in Ron Moore’s NBC drama pilot 17th Precinct last season, has a major recurring role on NBC’s midseason series The Firm. McRaney, repped by Stone Manners Salners and Course Management, recently starred in another TNT pilot, Bird Dog.

Gerald McRaney is set to star opposite Becki Newton in CBS' untitled Filgos family comedy pilot. It centers on Joe Reilly (McRaney), a blue-collar guy who wrestles with how to parent his unmarried grown daughter Eileen (Newton) and her 12-year-old son while sharing a house with them as well as his wife and his recently widowed mother. McRaney, who co-starred on NBC's freshman series Undercovers last fall, recently played the male lead in the TNT drama pilot Bird Dog. He is with Stone Manners Salners and Course Management. In a recasting, Dean Collins has been tapped to play the younger lead in ABC's comedy pilot Lost and Found, which centers on Jo (Jordana Spiro), a narcissistic thirtysomething New York City bartender and party girl whose life is turned upside-down when the conservative 18-year-old son (Collins) she gave up for adoption at 16 turns up on her doorstep. Collins replaced Gary Clayton...

In "Bridges," the season-one finale of USA's "Fairly Legal," airing Thursday, March 24 (following a morning marathon of earlier episodes), San Francisco-based mediator Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi) gets a seemingly impossible assignment -- settle a dispute in one day between endlessly litigious brothers -- from tough Judge Nicastro (Gerald McRaney).
Being tested by Nicastro is nothing new for Reed, whose free-and-easy style has often grated on the judge's nerves.
But off camera, it's quite a different relationship for McRaney and Shahi.
"I love working with her," McRaney tells Zap2it. "Isn't she the cutest thing ever? And very hard-working. That little girl, excuse me, young lady -- everybody's a little girl to me; I'm an old fart -- but anyway, she is just the most delightful young lady and hard-working, which always impresses me.
"She doesn't take herself seriously, but she takes what she does extremely seriously. I just love that.

TNT has reportedly passed on pilot projects Bird Dog and The Rabbit Factory. It was recently confirmed that the cable network had ordered drama pilot Perception to series. Deadline now claims Bird Dog, which focused on a young female police officer partnered with her own father, will not progress to series. Eliza Dushku was briefly attached to the lead role, but later dropped out and was replaced by Ashley Williams. The channel has also apparently passed (more)...

As it picked up drama pilot Perception to series today, I hear TNT passed on the other two pilots that had been in contention: Mike Robe's Bird Dog, about a father-daughter cop team, and Allan Loeb's untitled project based on Marshall Karp's novel The Rabbit Factory. The single series order to come out of the three pilots leaves some shelf space as TNT is yet to receive the two highest-profile pilots from this batch: the Dallas reboot, which is in pre-production, and the Robert Redford-produced Generations, which is in early stages of casting.

Earlier in the year, I took a look at what the networks were doing with their pilot season, as the time is growing nearer and nearer for shows to be picked up and decisions to be made. Here is a look at some of the major cable networks out there and what they’re doing. Since each network is so different, it’s kind of hard to see trends or really compare each development slate, so I separated things out a bit more and let you know what exactly I’d pick up. Some of my personal pick-ups are due to things the network’s losing this season, but some are just for personal reasons, i.e. I’d like to see how a particular show would go. There are several shows that are pretty much going to be picked up that I personally didn’t pick up, but I was never one for conventionality.
