Climate change is getting worse day after day, and every uncomfortable conversation we’ve been putting off for decides is waiting for us just over the horizon. Caitlin Cronenberg’s debut feature Humane dives headfirst into that messy, chaotic crisis we’ve built for ourselves, in a chamber piece that has one affluent family forced to make the ultimate decision. It’s a classic thriller set-up with a premise ripped from the headlines of tomorrow’s newspaper, and a great cast of character actors ready to rip each other apart as soon as shit hits the fan.
The world of Humane is not unlike our own. With dwindling resources and increasingly inhabitable conditions, it’s like looking 5 minutes into the future. A future where fresh vegetable and meats are prohibited, and standing for any length of time in direct sunlight with no protection is practically a death sentence. But in...

Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, associate editor and film writer at Deadline. Today’s guest is writer-director Anna Zlokovic, here to talk about her feature-length debut Appendage. The body horror comedy starring Hadley Robinson had its world premiere at this year’s SXSW and debuted October 2 on Hulu.
Robinson plays Hannah, a young fashion designer who seems fine on the surface but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt. Soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body: The Appendage. As Hannah’s health declines, The Appendage grows more powerful and begins to fuel her anxieties – her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend, and her parents’ lack of love and understanding. At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery: there are others out there like her.

Catalonia’s annual celebration of strange screen tales included a murderous birthmark, weretigers and a therapist overcome with ancient evil
At this year’s International Fantastic film festival of Catalonia, I got bitten all over. Not by vampires or werewolves, alas, but by mosquitoes, which took advantage of the unseasonably hot temperatures on Spain’s Costa del Garraf to transform my body into a throbbing, misshapen mass, rather like William Hurt in Altered States. Still, this helped me feel a kinship with the protagonists of this year’s exercises in body horror, many of them bearing the imprint of Shudder, a streaming service available in the UK, Ireland and Germany but not elsewhere in Europe. But it was one of their titles – Argentinian director Demián Rugna’s When Evil Lurks – that became the first Latin American movie in the festival’s 56-year history to win the Sitges award for best feature film.

The concept of turning successful short films into full-length features is quite popular. Although, for the horror genre, it fails to work in most cases. While the short may be riveting enough and deserving of rounds of applause, the film that comes out of it seems stretched out and vapid. The most prominent example of this happening has to be the 2016 downer Lights Out, which was based on a three-minute long short that scared the hell out of even the bravest of the brave. Hulu’s latest film, Appendage, happens to be a similar case, but in reverse.
Not only does the film version work, it actually upgrades the short that was released two years ago in the very popular “Bite Size Halloween” segment. Rachel Sennott, then a relatively new face and now a breakout star, has been replaced with Hadley Robinson. Although fans of the shorts might miss Sennott in the lead role,...

Now that Appendage has finally arrived on Hulu, a larger audience is able to check out writer-director Anna Zlokovic’s first feature film, which is a complex body horror movie that follows Hannah (Hadley Robinson), a beautiful young woman who initially seems to have a lot of positive things happening in her life. Hannah is building a career as an aspiring fashion designer. She has a nice apartment, a loving boyfriend called Kaelin (Brandon Mychal Smith) and a best friend, Esther (Kausar Mohammed), who also works alongside her.
But it’s soon apparent that Hannah is just not doing well. Her mean boss ridicules her designs in front of her colleagues, and her parents seem quite controlling over the way she acts, preferring Hannah to put on a mask of happiness around them and taking drinks away from her. We find...

"She's hiding something down there!" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a new body horror film titled Appendage, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Anna Zlokovic. This first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it's debuting for streaming as part of the Huluween offerings this October. A young fashion designer's life spirals out of control as her darkest thoughts physically turn into something gruesome – that won't stop growing. After hitting a breaking point, Hannah's debilitating self-doubt inner thoughts manifest into a monstrous creature that threatens to upend her life. The film stars Hadley Robinson as Hannah, with Emily Hampshire, Deborah Rennard, Kausar Mohammed, Pat Dortch, and Annie Pisapia. Yeah this absolutely looks creepy, getting into some disgusting territory by the end. Reminds me of the horror films Malignant and Hatching in plenty of ways. Who am I? Where do I fit in? Am I some kind of misfit? Will I ever be an ex-virgin? Such questions surely occur to every adolescent at one point or another. But only one out of approximately every 5,000 female ones arrive at them for the same diagnostic reason as the heroine of “Bloody Hell.” Molly McGlynn’s second feature focuses on a 16-year-old distressed to discover she has a rare congenital disorder that considerably complicates her nascent sex life, formative sexual identity and indeed basic sexual plumbing. This SXSW-premiering Canadian seriocomedy is a bit less focused and effective than the writer-director’s prior “Mary Goes Round,” but it’s still accomplished, and similarly renders relatable the sometimes self-defeating behaviors of a protagonist who’s got a lot of issues on her plate.
