Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

We got no qualms with being flat out wrong with our predictions set, but we’re thinking we might sort of still be in the know with this prediction…perhaps a full year too early. With production having taken place in 2014, we can imagine that Israeli-born/NYC-based/Tisch Ido Fluk reserved 2015 for post prod activities such as color mixing and working the score with now considered veteran Sundance attendees in Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (Nasty Baby). Starring Dana Stevens in the lead, with a supporting cast that includes Malin Akerman, Kerry Bishé, and Oliver Platt, The Ticket now sports a longer list of producers and is definitely a title to look out for in ’16.
Gist: Written by Fluk and Sharon Mashishi, this is the cautionary tale of James (Dan Stevens), a blind man who miraculously regains the sight he lost at age 13. In doing so he loses his moral compass,...

Stars: Zosia Mamet, Sam Underwood, Aidan Quinn, Virginia Madsen, Olympia Dukakis, Nat Wolff, Joshua Bowman, Jee Young Han | Written by Peter Hutchings, Christina Mengert | Directed by Maggie Greenwald
Rhea Carver (Mamet) is different. She makes art and clothes from rubbish she picks up from the ground, her family are reclusive artists and this leads to trouble in school as she is ridiculed for her strange behaviour. When she falls in love with Oliver (Underwood) from her school she awakens a power within herself which stems from an ancient family secret. This leads her on a tale of wonder and magic as she tries to figure out who she is and what she can do with this new found power.
The Last Keepers is a tale of love and magic. It deals with the awkwardness of high school, bullying, young romance and family troubles, sometimes to an almost cheesy level but...

"Star Trek Into Darkness"
What's It About? J.J. Abrams' second "Star Trek" installment follows the Enterprise crew when they're called back home and find an unstoppable force of terror within their own organization. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads the Enterprise against a one man weapon of mass destruction. Why We're In: This sequel is exhilarating from start to finish with tons of spectacle and a solid narrative. Abarams' film perfectly mixes classic references that will excite any "Star Trek" fan, but won't make newbies feel left out. "Star Trek Into Darkness" was one of Moviefone's Best Movies of 2013 (So Far).
