"Der Sommer der Gaukler" is a German 105-minute movie from 5 years ago. The director here is Marcus H. Rosenmüller and the script is a collaboration between Robert Hültner and Klaus Wolfertstetter. I cannot really appreciate their efforts though. I was never on the edge of my seat and I found the story mostly boring. The film tries to make an impact in terms of at least 5 genres, but the result was that it did not deliver convincingly in any of these. I also have to say that I found lead actor Max von Thun underwhelming. But the same can be said about the entire supporting cast basically. I was already disappointed by Rosenmüller really well-received most known work "Grave Decisions", and this more recent work here does not change my opinion a bit. It is very much style over substance. I guess cinematography, makeup and costumes were convincing and lived up to the challenge, but the story and acting is just so forgettable that not even the best achievement from the visual side could make up for the other flaws with this film. There were several scenes that added little and I believe this may have been a better watch if they had left out some of the less relevant stuff. But then again, maybe they would have cut out some of the better moments and it would have been an even worse achievement. The film dragged a lot and the acting was painfully over the top at times. I do not recommend this movie and give it a thumbs down. Watch something else instead.
