Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023, so not only did the sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 have a substantially higher budget, that success opened the door to an entire cinematic universe that will consist of at least one more Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio: Unstrung. Premiere Entertainment is currently presenting Pinocchio: Unstrung to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market – and Variety was able to learn more information on the project, including the fact that the movie will be made with “little reliance on VFX and feature the character of Pinocchio as a practical doll. Recently, a quote about Disney canceling Tinker Bell for being problematic has circulated around the internet, attributed to a “Disney representative.”
The alleged quote reads:
“Tinkerbell, unfortunately, has become an problematic image for our guests; specifically, young girls. Specifically, in terms of the portrayal of an unrealistic body image as well as dependency of approval and/or attention from Peter Pan, as seen in previous incarnations of the character. We feel these traits are no longer representive of our inclusive focused values and thus, are currently in process of redesigning an updated Tinkerbell for modern audiences.”

I can’t say for 100% certainty that it is not true, but I have several reasons for believing that it is not.

Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film, Hook, is regarded as the best adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. The film presented a different take on the children’s fairytale and provided a different experience than the other iterations. A popular rumor suggested that Tom Hanks was the first choice for the role of an older Peter Pan. However, the Philadelphia actor clarified that the story is different.
Robin Williams in Spielberg’s Hook
Hook focuses on the story of a lawyer played by the late Robin Williams, who learns that he is the older Peter Pan. When his kids are kidnapped by Captain Hook as revenge, he goes back to Neverland and joins forces with the Lost Boys and Julia Roberts’ Tinkerbell. Steven Spielberg’s iteration of the fairy tale initially divided the audiences but became a cult classic moving forward.
Was Tom Hanks the first choice to play Peter Pan in Hook?...

Producers Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Scott Jeffrey are building a cinematic universe out of horror movies based on public domain family friendly stories – including Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, that film’s sequels, Pinocchio Unstrung, and Bambi: The Reckoning, which is inspired by Felix Salten’s 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. The Bambi horror movie started filming back in January, aiming to make its way out into the world sometime this fall, and today a teaser trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The free domain is opening up so many possibilities, including the opportunity for the mutants of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey to expand into a wider Poohniverse! This new horror cinematic universe will include a slew of crossovers with other totally-not-Disney characters.
Variety is the bearer of this news, whether a blessing or a curse. As a longtime horror writer, I’m all for more low-budget slashers with a gimmick. So, how much of a good thing is too much?
We’ll find out soon, for sure. The Poohniverse includes Tinkerbell, Bambi, The Mad Hatter, and Sleeping Beauty. This massive horror movie version of the MCU will land sometime in 2025.
What’s the overarching storyline of this cavalcade of free-to-use figures? They’re all out to get the survivors of the earlier films (including the ones that are yet to be released).

The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.
Officially titled the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, the box set comes with three volumes that open up to feature the original theatrical artwork for each film. Additionally, the package offers digital codes to all 100 movies, a certificate of authenticity, a lithograph from the upcoming feature Wish, and a collectible set of crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with “Disney 100.”
Drawing films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and the now-closed DisneyToon Studios, the collection offers a pretty comprehensive timeline of the company, founded in 1923. The box set features early classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, 1990s renaissance films like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Toy Story, and more modern offerings — many of which got the direct-to-Disney+ treatment thanks to Covid — including Soul,...

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Sure, the studio showed some footage from Disney's upcoming animated movie "Wish," and they announced that "Haunted Mansion" would be hitting Disney+ in October. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.
This fall, the House of Mouse will be releasing the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, which collects 100 animated films from both Disney and Pixar, reaching as far back as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and up through this summer's "Elemental" from Pixar. Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.

The limited-edition collection will be available on Nov. 14, with pre-orders beginning on Walmart.com on Sept. 18. It has a retail price of $1,500.
What’s fascinating about the set is that it includes a wide array of classic Walt Disney Animation Studios features, along with beloved Pixar favorites and a smattering of films (many of them direct-to-video sequels to earlier masterworks) created by the since-shuttered DisneyToon Studios. When Bob Iger took over Walt Disney again, one of his first moves was to reassure Wall Street that more sequels and remakes were coming. Disney has a lot in its vault, and remaking animated classics as live-action movies is widely seen as a safe strategy, with built-in audiences for familiar fare.
That strategy is coming into question, though, as weak international box office numbers for “The Little Mermaid” trickle in. The live-action remake of the 1989 film grossed $95 million in its Friday-Sunday North American debut, but just $68 million overseas. For comparison, star power fueled the 2019 “Aladdin” remake with Will Smith and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson, both of which earned more than $1 billion, mostly overseas.
What ties Disney’s recent remakes together is that they’re primarily based on movies from what’s called its “Renaissance” period — a range from the late 1980s to late 1990s when...

Jude Law had a trick up his sleeve to get along with child actors.
The actor played the fearsome Captain Hook in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Peter Pan and Wendy”, a role which saw him acting alongside the cast of children.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.
The same cannot be said for "Peter Pan & Wendy," Lowery's latest Disney remake, this time...

Shahidi — who stars alongside Alexander Molony’s Peter Pan and Ever Anderson’s Wendy in the flick — told Carlos Bustamante of whether she was on harnesses and ropes flying around a studio or if a lot of it was computer generated: “Well, a lot of the magic happened in Vancouver where I was not. The Unholy is a horror movie directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It is based on the novel written by James Herbert.
A supernatural horror film about miracles and apparitions, with a lot of religion (Catholic this time) and some clichés that work in lightweight horror films that work in a film that treads a firm ground without any risks…

A supernatural horror film about miracles and apparitions, with a lot of religion (Catholic this time) and some clichés that work in lightweight horror films that work in a film that treads a firm ground without any risks…

Lucy Liu is set to lend her voice for her first solo audiobook performance.
The actress will narrate the audiobook of Our Missing Hearts from bes-tselling author Celeste Ng, Penguin Random House Audio announced Wednesday.
Our Missing Hearts, set to release on Oct. 4, tells the story of 12-year-old Bird, whose mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left the family when he was 9 years old. Bird and his father’s lives “have been governed by laws written to preserve ‘American culture’ in the wake of years of economic instability and violence.” In order to preserve that culture, authorities are allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have also been forced to remove “unpatriotic” books, including the work of Bird’s mother.

Skydance Animation has landed another major talent.
Rich Moore, director of “Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” is joining the team in an exclusive, multi-year overall deal. Under the new pact, Moore will create, develop and produce original animated features for the studio.
After leaving Disney in 2019, Moore did a brief stint at Sony Pictures Animation. The only feature he helped with, last year’s “Vivo,” was released directly to Netflix.
The move to Skydance Animation sees Moore reuniting with his old boss, former Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer John Lasseter. Lasseter took a six month sabbatical from Disney and Pixar in 2017 after sexual misconduct allegations emerged; he was ultimately never rehired (he consulted until the end of 2018). In January 2019, Lasseter was hired to head Skydance Animation, which then had an exclusive deal with Paramount and is now in partnership with Apple TV+.

Disney Branded Television President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh is stepping down after 33 years with the company. He will launch his own production company, which has a deal with Disney.

This shouldn’t need pointing out, but Disney doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to the representation of Asian people in its films, and we’re including both its live-action movies and its animations in that statement. Although the company has been trying to take steps forward and redress the balance in reach years, Disney productions tend to be very white, and very American even when they’re set in parts of the world that are thousands of miles away from America. Not all of the blame for that should be laid at the feet of the people who run Disney today, as many of the company’s ‘classic’ animations were made during the mid 20th century when views weren’t as progressive as they are today, but there’s still something of a historical dearth when it comes to positive representations of Asian characters.

Editor’s Note: Don Winslow, author of bestsellers including The Power of the Dog, The Winter of Frankie Machine, and The Force, is writing a week’s worth of columns for Deadline on his experiences in Hollywood. In today’s humorous installment, he talks how a green light for Frankie Machine with Scorsese and De Niro reunited went splat, after De Niro turned became infatuated with the story that became The Irishman., Winslow explains why, to him, the blame falls on Eric Roth, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who worked with De Niro on the superb epic The Good Shepherd. Another wonderful piece worth the price of my continuing to wear a New England Pats shirt for the whole week (fresh hostage pic below). – Mf

The Walt Disney Company has lately made something of an artform out of reimagining its own animated features into (often) billion-dollar live-action films, starting with Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, as well as the photorealistic computer animated remake of The Lion King.
A live-action version of Mulan, said to be more faithful to the original Chinese folktale than Disney’s 1998 animated film, is set to premiere this Spring, with Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Sword in the Stone, Lilo & Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Bambi, as well as Jungle Book and Aladdin sequels and possible Tinker Bell and Prince Charming projects, slated to be remade over the coming years.
According to The DisInsider, a potential live-action Rapunzel film has now been added to that extensive list as well, though...

Pixar got to nerd out on fantasy and magic for the first time with “Onward” (March 6), in which two teenage Elf brothers (the McU’s Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) try to resurrect their dad from the dead using a 24-hour magic spell. Think “The Lord of the Rings” meets “Weekend at Bernie’s,” only would-be wizard Ian (Holland), has no idea what to do, and must rely on older brother Barley (Pratt), for instructions about the rules of wizarding and how to leverage their civilization’s lost fantasy world.
First, the Pixar team formed The Fellowship group to create the rules of the magic spells, including the rhyming incantations and how they would visually look. “We had to realize something that’s abstract and personify it,” said Vincent Serritella, the effects supervisor. “We had to converge on the idea of an image of magic, go back to the base...

A new director has been hired on the flagship feature film at Skydance Animation, a division of David Ellison’s company run by former Pixar chief John Lasseter.

“If no one is dying, nothing is exploding and no one is trying to kill each other, you shouldn’t be calling me,” says Jane Wu, a storyboard artist with credits including “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “Mulan.”

Variety is reporting that Reese Witherspoon is on the verge of collaborating with Nancy Meyers for indie comedy, Home Again.
Witherspoon, who was all set to team with Meyers for The Intern before a last-minute scheduling conflict forced the actress to bow out, is set to anchor the upcoming picture as a single mother who decides to uproot for the bright lights of Los Angeles where she finds herself living with three eccentric young men – an unconventional family worthy of a sitcom if there ever was one.
Though Nancy Meyers is attached to produce, it is actually her daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, that will take point from behind the lens. No word on which actors will fill the roles of Witherspoon’s newfound roommates, but we’ll keep you updated as Home Again preps to enter production in Los Angeles next month.

I'm sure Disney had already been considering it for a while but perhaps they're more serious about a live-action The Little Mermaid now that they've seen how interested the public is in their Beauty and the Beast. Seriously, though. In just 24 hours, the first teaser trailer for Disney's Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson (of Harry Potter fame) topped Star Wars: Force Awakens for views. Now, they're both Disney products so it's not really a competition but it does say something about what audiences are clamoring for and Disney is ready to capitalize. Deadline reports: Execs at Disney are in the early stages of reviving Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid as a live-action feature. Disney production chiefs recently heard a new take and are currently evaluating whether to proceed with the idea. Deadline understands that initial discussions have also taken place with major producers, including some...

The slate features theme park adaptation Jungle Cruise pairing Dwayne Johnson with Bad Santa writers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, Tim Burton’s Dumbo project, and adventure A Wrinkle In Time, the Madeleine L’Engle sci-fi book adaptation that last emerged from the Disney vaults as a TV movie in 2003 and sees Ava DuVerney attached to direct from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee.

Disney adds Snow White and Mulan to its list of live action takes on its animated features...
You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films.
We've recently learned that two movies based on or around Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs are now in development at Disney.

Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success,...

In what has become something of a recurring trend in Hollywood lately, Reese Witherspoon is producing and may star in an origins film documenting the creation of Barbie. Not to be confused with the live-action project in the works over at Sony and Mattel, Witherspoon’s project is to be based on Robin Gerber’s novel, Barbie And Ruth: The Story Of The World’s Most Famous Doll And The Woman Who Created Her.
Production house Bold Films is behind the new feature, according to Screen International, which joins Big Beach’s Monopoly picture and Brett Ratner’s Tetris flick in the growing pile of atypical origins tales. It’s understood the latter of which will be stylized after David Fincher’s excellent The Social Network, documenting the legal fallouts that plagued the creation of the seminal brick-breaker.

As Disney toils to update its extensive library of animated classics with a huge slate of reimaginings, reboots and origin stories, the studio has zeroed in one of its most famous (and fur-loving) villainesses for a live-action origin story: 101 Dalmatians‘ Cruella de Vil.
Saving Mr. Banks screenwriter Kelly Marcel, best known for penning Fifty Shades of Grey, is attached to write Cruella for Disney, which views the origin pic as a priority and is fast-tracking it as such. Marcel will collaborate with Steve Zissis, the co-creator of HBO’s Togetherness, on the story. Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) previously worked on a version of the script.
Cruella de Vil, who appeared in both the 1961 animated original and its 2003 direct-to-video sequel, is one of Disney’s most widely recognizable villains, from her ostentatious fashion to her distinctive red-and-black automobile, so perhaps it shouldn’t come as much of a...
