Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.
True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.
“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

Tallulah Willis is opening herself up like never before in a candid essay she’s written for Vogue.
In her essay, Willis shares the experience of growing up as the child of two of the world’s most famous movie stars, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

Believing that her family had been shielding her from these harsh “truths,” she kept her self-loathing to herself. “I just lived with the silent certainty of my own ugliness,” she wrote.

Sian Heder’s heartwarming family film “Coda” not only scored a historic Oscar for Deaf actor Troy Kotsur, it’s also the first English-language remake of a French film to win the best picture Academy Award.
Acquired by Apple Studios at the 2021 Sundance in a record-breaking 25 million deal, “Coda” is based on the 2014 French box office hit “La Famille Bélier,” about a teenage girl with a singing talent who is the only hearing member of a Deaf family. Like most remakes, the underdog movie could have died off after sitting on a shelf for too long had it not been for the all-star team of French producers with U.S. ties who shepherded the project.
Besides Jérôme Seydoux at Pathé Films, which fully financed the movie, “Coda’s” lead producers are Philippe Rousselet, who worked for many years at Warner Bros. in L.A. and produced “Lord of War” and...

The morning after the Oscars, “Coda” producer Philippe Rousselet was ready to get some sleep. “In the last few weeks, as long as we were in the challenger’s seat, I was perfectly fine,” he said. But after a string of wins, “you start losing sleep, you go from the challenger’s seat to almost the frontrunner. And, if we lose, we’re going to be the losers overnight. When we had already won so much.”
Now, more people than ever will see “Coda,” which returns to theatrical release April 1 after winning Oscars for writer-director Sian Heder for Adapted Screenplay, Troy Kotsur for Supporting Actor, and Best Picture. “Today the movie is being seen everywhere,” said Rousselet. “People are very much aware of the movie. After watching her family drama Coda break ground this morning as both the first Apple Original, and the first feature led by a predominantly deaf cast to land a Best Picture Oscar nomination, writer-director Sian Heder caught up with Deadline to discuss the meaning behind this recognition from the Film Academy, and upcoming projects including a biopic on disability rights activist Judy Heumann.
“I’m just stunned. I’m so moved. I’m so proud of this cast and this crew,” the director said with regard to Coda’s reception. “It was a really scrappy production. It was a little indie movie and people poured their hearts into it, and it’s just so incredible to see the movie get recognized on such a big scale. Writer-director Siân Heder makes it very clear she knew the double meaning of “Coda,” the title of her new Apple TV Plus film, an acronym for Child of Deaf Adults. It’s used to describe the movie’s star, Emilia Jones, who plays would-be singer Ruby, a character eking out a living with her father Frank (Troy Kotsur), mother Jackie (Marlee Matlin) and brother Leo (Daniel Durant) — all deaf actors — aboard a fishing boat in scenic Gloucester, Mass.

It’s not that hard to get a streaming title seen by awards voters. Best Picture winner “Nomadland” would have been a major Oscar player whenever it came out, but it was a surprise that during the pandemic, Amazon took TIFF 2019 selection “Sound of Metal” to six Oscar nominations and two tech wins, further than many would have predicted.
That brings us to “Coda,” which Apple acquired for a record-breaking $25 million and won the Grand Jury, Audience Award, Best Director, and Ensemble Acting prizes at the virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Sian Heder’s moving drama about a deaf family stars British singer-actress Emilia Jones and Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin (“Children of a Lesser God”). It opens August 13, both in theaters and on Apple’s streaming service, AppleTV+.
That’s good news and bad. Any movie that expensive carries the burden of expectations. That said: Exactly what should be measured? Today, box...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Beckett (Ferdinando Cito Filomarino)
The title Beckett evokes the very mystery its plot presents. Former Luca Guadagnino understudy Ferdinando Cito Filomarino teams with versatile and bonafide action star John David Washington to create a throwback of a picture: at times a conspiracy thriller, character study, and man-on-the-run tale à la The Fugitive, Beckett presents an atmosphere unique to these genre conventions. – Erik N. (full review)

The Cloud in Her Room (Zheng Lu Xinyaun)
The Hangzhou of Zheng Lu Xinyaun’s The Cloud in Her Room is a funereal city, a protean place rife with cranes and construction sites, where new buildings mushroom overnight and craters devour the earth beneath. People do not belong in that 10-million people’s...

Filmmaker Siân Heder, whose Sundance hit Coda was recently sold to Apple for a festival record of $25M, is set to direct and write a feature take of Sarah Lotz’s upcoming 2022 novel Impossible.
The Penguin Group Berkley Books novel tells the story of Nick, a ghostwriter who is a disappointment to himself and his soon-to-be-ex-wife, and Bee, a commitment-phobe content on repurposing wedding dresses rather than finding a reason to wear one herself. The two are meant to be together, but fate has other plans. They have an instant connection after a misdirected email lands in Bee’s inbox, and over time they develop real feelings for each other. Eventually, Nick and Bee come to the conclusion that they have to meet in person, yet when they both arrive at their planned destination, they discover it’s love at the right time, but in the completely wrong place.

Siân Heder admittedly had to manage her expectations prior to premiering “Coda” at the virtual Sundance Film Festival. After all, her first movie “Tallulah,” a 2016 melodrama starring Elliot Page and Allison Janney, gave her a taste of the hype that greets a screening in Park City’s Eccles Theatre.
Yet Heder quickly realized that even at home, audiences were experiencing a collective emotional response to the film. “It was reassuring that somehow in our virtual worlds, we were able to connect,” she says. Sure enough, “Coda” became the toast of Sundance and was acquired by Apple for a record-setting $25 million.
“Coda” received multiple offers; the choice to work with Apple was deliberate. “Apple said, ‘We don’t want this to be a movie, we want this to start a movement,’” says Heder, who previously collaborated with Apple on the TV series “Little America.” “I felt they have a real commitment...

Sian Heder’s “Coda” has sold to Apple for up to $25 million after an intense bidding war ended in a Sundance record-setting deal, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The deal knocked down the $17.5 million that “Palm Springs” went for last year to Hulu and Neon to No. 2 as the highest sale from a film from the Sundance Film Festival.
In her follow-up to “Tallulah,” Heder directed the drama about a teen girl (Emilia Jones), who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is stuck keeping their family fishing business afloat. But when she’s drawn to her school’s choir club, she’s encouraged by her teacher (Eugenio Derbez) to pursue a career in music. “Coda,” the coming-of-age drama that premiered Thursday to raves, has sold to Apple for around $25 million, smashing the sales record set last year when Neon and Hulu teamed up to buy “Palm Springs.” Deadline first reported the news.
It’s as sure a sign as ever that this year’s virtual program won’t equal sluggish market activity. Sources say Apple and Amazon were among the buyers engaged in a bidding war for the film shortly after it premiered on day one.
Written and directed by “Orange is the New Black” writer and “Tallulah” helmer Sian Heder, “Coda” offers a fresh perspective on a coming-of-age family drama: Emilia Jones stars as the teenage child of deaf parents (Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur) caught between her love of singing and the expectations she faces as the only hearing person in her family, who run a fishing business.

An hour before the first of the Sundance Film Festival’s online premieres began Thursday evening, Sundance Institute Executive Director/CEO Keri Putnam appeared on a welcome video streamed live, admitting that trying to recreate the magic of one of the film community’s most important annual events was a risky proposition.
“We had a choice to make: We could cancel or move the festival,” she said. “Or we could take a risk and imagine a way to recreate the energy of the full festival experience digitally.”
The first report card is in and it suggests the gamble paid off: After the apparently seamless screenings of six opening night films, the online festival platform is sound. Early reviews of those titles were overwhelmingly favorable, negating concerns that an online Sundance would offer a lesser-quality slate. And with Neon making the first deal of the festival for “Flee” just hours after it aired,...

Writer-director Siân Heder, whose unconventional family drama “Tallulah” premiered at the 2016 edition of Sundance, is excited to be back at the festival, even if the conditions are somewhat different this year with the event taking place virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. “Sundance sent us a package yesterday,” Heder says over a Zoom conversation before the opening night premiere of her film “Coda.” “[It] had a down coat, my festival badge, and a hat for Sundance.

It’s hard to judge Siân Heder’s Coda outside of its context: being one of the opening feature films to the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, a (now-virtual) place known for family dramas and indie darlings. Depicting the high school struggles, and coming-of-age of the only hearing girl in a deaf family, Heder’s follow-up to Tallulah (another Sundance selection) takes its name from an acronym––Children Of Deaf Adults––though it’s determined to stray from any generalizations. With big warmth and bigger care, Coda overcomes its tropes and somewhat formulaic nature to produce a heartfelt tale of family, wrapped in a coating of love. In that way, it might be the ideal film to start one of the world’s biggest festivals during a seemingly never-ending pandemic, one that splinters families as well as hopes and dreams of child and parent alike.

To say that the cast and crew of “Coda” became close would be an understatement. “There were a lot of tears shed,” writer and director Sian Heder tells Gold Derby. “You make movies and you come together and you bond and then move on, but this — it did feel like we were a family.”
“Coda” is an acronym for child of deaf adults. This year’s Sundance is shorter, virtual, is not local to just Park City and has a new director for the first time in years. But what has not changed is that Sundance remains one of the best marketplaces for independent films. This year’s lineup for the festival set for Jan. 28-Feb. 3 even has some hopeful Oscar contenders such as Robin Wright’s “Land” and “Judas and the Black Messiah” from Warner Bros., and we’ve already seen a few titles such as “Together Together,” “The World to Come” and “The Most Beautiful Boy in the World” find homes. But while there may be fewer films overall and without the in-person wheeling and dealing, the market figures to be just as robust with some exciting movies up for sale.

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival is a slimmer version of itself — fewer films, fewer days, and mostly virtual — but the essential element of discovery remains. With roughly the same volume of submissions as last year, the program reflects Sundance’s progressive interests (it finally achieved gender parity after crawling toward that number in recent years) as well as its signature blend of feel-good narratives, timely subjects, and boundary-pushing formalism. On a call with IndieWire, Jackson and director of programming Kim Yutani talked through some of the potential highlights and...

“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. Ellen Page and Paris Berelc have boarded gaming comedy “1Up,” with Kyle Newman directing in what could be the first feature film for BuzzFeed Studios.
Berelc will portray a gamer who quits her college esports team due to sexism from her male counterparts. To keep her scholarship, she’s forced to assemble an all-female team and enlists the help of a coach — portrayed by Page — who has a gaming scandal in her past.
The script is written by Julia Yorks. BuzzFeed’s Richard Alan Reid is producing along with Michael Philip and Jason Moring. Production is expected to begin in Toronto in November.
Page stars in the Netflix series “Umbrella Academy” as Vanya Hargreeves. She was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for 2007’s comedy-drama “Juno” and has credits on “Inception,” “Tallulah,” “Whip It” and portrayed Kitty Pryde in “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.
