- [Rick tells Jenner that he's grateful for the chance]
- Rick Grimes: I'm grateful.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: The day will come when you won't be.
- [Jenner tells the group that there's nothing left anywhere]
- Daryl Dixon: Man, I'm gonna get shit-faced drunk again.
- [Daryl swings an axe repeatedly at the C.D.C. door]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Those doors are designed to withstand a rocket launcher.
- Daryl Dixon: Well, your head ain't!
- [as Daryl tries swinging the axe at Jenner]
- [Dale decides to stay with Andrea in the C.D.C. facility]
- Dale Horvath: [Dale in a low voice] Okay. You win.
- Andrea: What are you doing?
- Dale Horvath: I said, okay.
- Andrea: Don't pull this, Dale.
- Dale Horvath: I'm not pulling anything. If you're staying, I stay too. He's right. We know what's waiting for us out there. I don't want to face it alone.
- Andrea: Dale, get the hell out. I don't want you here.
- Dale Horvath: [Dale looks to Andrea's eyes] Too bad. You don't get to do that, to... To come into somebody's life, make them care, and then just check out. I'm staying. The matter is settled.
- [Jenner asks the computer Vi to define H.I.T.s to the group]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: In the event of a catastrophic power failure... in a terrorist attack, for example... H.I.T.s are deployed to prevent any organisms from getting out.
- Rick Grimes: H.I.T.s?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Vi, define.
- Vi: H.I.T.s - high-impulse thermobaric fuel-air explosives consists of a two-stage aerosol ignition that produces a blast wave of significantly greater power and duration than any other known explosive except nuclear. The vacuum-pressure effect ignites the oxygen between 5,000 and 6,000 degrees and is used when the greatest loss of life and damage to structures is desired.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner in a low voice] It sets the air on fire. No pain. An end to sorrow, grief... Regret. Everything.
- [the group tries breaking the glass to escape the C.D.C. facility]
- Carol Peletier: [Carol reaches in her bag] Rick, I have something that might help.
- Shane Walsh: Carol, I don't think a nail file's gonna do it.
- [when Carol pulls out a grenade]
- [Jenner tells the group what happens to the C.D.C. facility in 28 minutes]
- Rick Grimes: What happens in 28 minutes?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick yells to Jenner] What happens in 28 minutes!
- Daryl Dixon: Come on!
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [as Jenner screams to the group] You know what this place is? We protected the public from very nasty stuff! Weaponized smallpox! Ebola strains that could wipe out half the country! Stuff you don't want getting out! Ever!
- [Jenner takes Rick's group into the housing area of the C.D.C. facility]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: If you shower, go easy on the hot water.
- Glenn Rhee: [Glenn smiles] Hot water?
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: [T-Dog smiles] That's what the man said.
- [Rick tells Jenner that it was only a matter of time before they died out there]
- Rick Grimes: You don't know what it's like out there. You may think you do, but you don't. We'd have died out there. It was only a matter of time. There's too many of those things. My... my boy... My... my wife, I never... I never told 'em what I really thought. I never even hinted, just... Just kept it in. Kept it in and kept us moving, you know. Just kept it in. Kept us...
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It'll all be okay. It'll be okay.
- [in a flashback, Shane leans over Rick's unconscious body at the hospital]
- Shane Walsh: Listen to me. If you're gonna wake up, I need you to do it now. Okay? Now. Please, man, just show me a sign. Anything. Please, Rick.
- [when a bomb goes off over the hospital building]
- [Jenner tells the group that he's all that's left]
- Rick Grimes: Where is everybody? The other doctors, the staff?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: I'm it. It's just me here.
- Lori Grimes: What about the person you were speaking with? Vi?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Vi, say hello to our guests. Tell them... Welcome.
- Vi: [Vi responds] Hello, guests. Welcome.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks to Rick] I'm all that's left.
- [Jenner checks on each person's blood in the C.D.C. facility]
- Andrea: What's the point? If we were infected, we'd all be running a fever.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: I've already broken every rule in the book letting you in here. Let me just at least be thorough.
- [Rick sees the food left by Jenner for their morning hangovers]
- Rick Grimes: Where'd all this come from?
- Lori Grimes: Jenner.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick hands Lori the bottle of aspirins] Could you help me, please?
- Lori Grimes: He thought we could use it. Some of us, at least.
- Glenn Rhee: [Glenn holds his face in his arm] Don't ever, ever, ever let me drink again.
- [Jenner tells the computer Vi to begin the playback video on TS-19]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Few people ever got a chance to see this. Very few.
- Carl Grimes: [Carl looks at the large digital monitor] Is that a brain?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: An extraordinary one. Not that it matters in the end.
- [the group drinks wine together while at the C.D.C. facility]
- Dale Horvath: You know, in Italy, children have a little bit of wine with dinner. And in France.
- Lori Grimes: Well, when Carl is in Italy or France, he can have some then.
- Rick Grimes: What's it gonna hurt? Come on.
- Dale Horvath: Come on.
- Rick Grimes: [Lori looks to Rick before agreeing] What?
- Dale Horvath: There you are, young lad.
- Carl Grimes: [Rick chuckles as Carl takes his first alcoholic drink] Eww.
- Lori Grimes: [the group laughs at Carl's reaction] That's my boy. That's my boy.
- [Daryl tells Glenn to keep drinking his wine]
- Daryl Dixon: [Daryl looks to Glenn] Keep drinking, little man. I want to see how red your face can get.
- [Carl asks his father Rick if he's hungover]
- Carl Grimes: Are you hungover? Mom said you'd be.
- Rick Grimes: Mom is right.
- Lori Grimes: Mom has that annoying habit.
- [Jenner tells the computer Vi to scan forward to the first event]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It invades the brain like meningitis. The adrenal glands hemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs. Then death. Everything you ever were or ever will be... Gone.
- Sophia Peletier: [Sophia asks Carol] Is that what happened to Jim?
- Carol Peletier: Yes.
- Lori Grimes: [Andrea starts to sniffle] She lost somebody two days ago. Her sister.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: I lost somebody, too. I know how devastating it is.
- [Jenner tells Rick that there is no hope for mankind]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks to Rick] You do want this. Last night, you said, you knew it was just a matter of time before everybody you loved was dead.
- Shane Walsh: What? You really said that? After all your big talk?
- Rick Grimes: I had to keep hope alive, didn't I?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: There is no hope. There never was.
- Rick Grimes: There's always hope. Maybe it won't be you, maybe not here, but somebody somewhere...
- Andrea: What part of 'Everything's gone' do you not understand?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Listen to your friend. She gets it. This is what takes us down. This is our extinction event.
- [Daryl tries talking to Jenner about the building shutting itself down]
- Daryl Dixon: Hey man, I'm talking to you. What do you mean it's shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: You'd be surprised.
- [Daryl sees Jenner carrying a machine gun on his shoulder]
- Daryl Dixon: Doctors always go around packing heat like that?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: There were plenty left lying around. I familiarized myself. But you look harmless enough.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks at Carl] Except you. I'll have to keep my eye on you.
- [as Carl smiles]
- [Jenner tells the group what happened to everyone at the C.D.C. facility]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Well, when things got bad, a lot of people just left. Went off to be with their families. And when things got worse, when the military cordon got overrun, the rest bolted.
- Shane Walsh: Every last one?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: No... Many couldn't face walking out the door. They... Opted out. There was a rash of suicides. That was a bad time.
- Andrea: You didn't leave. Why?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: I just kept working. Hoping to do some good.
- Glenn Rhee: Dude, you are such a buzzkill, man.
- [Dale sits with Andrea after she vomits the wine she drank]
- Andrea: Everything's gone.
- Dale Horvath: It's always better going down than coming up, huh?
- Andrea: I don't mean the wine, Dale. You know, it's over. There's nothing left. Don't you see that?
- Dale Horvath: Oh, I... I see a... A chance to make a new start.
- Andrea: [Andrea laughs] Oh, my God, Dale. Dale, didn't you see the look on Jenner's face? Hear what I'm saying. There's nothing left.
- [as Dale remains silent]
- [Jenner tells the computer Vi to do an Enhanced Internal View of TS-19's brain]
- Shane Walsh: [as the group sees the brain of TS-19] What are those lights?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It's a person's life... Experiences, memories. It's everything. Somewhere in all that organic wiring, all those ripples of light, is you... The thing that makes you unique. And human.
- Daryl Dixon: You don't make sense ever?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Those are synapses, electric impulses in the brain that carry all the messages. They determine everything a person says does or thinks from the moment of birth to the moment of death.
- Rick Grimes: Death? That's what this is, a vigil?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Yes. Or rather the playback of the vigil.
- Andrea: This person died? Who?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Test subject 19. Someone who was bitten and infected... And volunteered to have us record the process.
- [Jenner tells the computer Vi to scan forward to the second event]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: The resurrection times vary wildly. We had reports of it happening in as little as three minutes. The longest we heard of was eight hours. In the case of this patient, it was two hours, one minute... Seven seconds.
- Lori Grimes: It restarts the brain?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: No, just the brain stem. Basically, it gets them up and moving.
- Rick Grimes: But they're not alive?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner holds his arms out] You tell me.
- Rick Grimes: It's nothing like before. Most of that brain is dark.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Dark, lifeless, dead. The frontal lobe, the neocortex, the human part... That doesn't come back. The you part. Just a shell driven by mindless instinct.
- [Andrea tells Jenner that he has no clue what the cause of the disease is]
- Andrea: You have no idea what it is, do you?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal.
- Jacqui: Or the wrath of God?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: There is that.
- [the group sees the clock counting down in the C.D.C. facility]
- Dale Horvath: Dr. Jenner, I know this has been taxing for you and I hate to ask one more question, but... That clock... It's counting down. What happens at zero?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: The basement generators... They run out of fuel.
- Rick Grimes: And then?
- Rick Grimes: [as Jenner walks off Rick asks the computer Vi] Vi, what happens when the power runs out?
- Vi: When the power runs out, facility-wide decontamination will occur.
- [the group tries asking Jenner why the building power is shutting down]
- Carol Peletier: Why is the air off? And the lights in our room?
- Daryl Dixon: What's going on? Why is everything turned off?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Energy use is being prioritized.
- Dale Horvath: Air isn't a priority? And lights?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It's not up to me. Zone 5 is shutting itself down.
- [Jenner tells Andrea that like the French the power grid ran out of juice]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It was the French.
- Andrea: What?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution.
- Jacqui: What happened?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: The same thing that's happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuel. I mean, how stupid is that?
- [Rick tells Jenner that all they want is a choice]
- Rick Grimes: You're lying about no hope. If that were true, you'd have bolted with the rest or taken the easy way out. You didn't. You chose the hard path. Why?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: It doesn't matter.
- Rick Grimes: It does matter. It always matters. You stayed when others ran. Why?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Not because I wanted to. I made a promise... To her. My wife.
- Andrea: Test subject 19 was your wife?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: She begged me to keep going as long as I could. How could I say no? She was dying. It should've been me on that table. I wouldn't have mattered to anybody. She was a loss to the world. Hell, she ran this place. I just worked here. In our field, she was an Einstein. Me? I'm just... Edwin Jenner. She could've done something about this. Not me.
- Rick Grimes: Your wife didn't have a choice. You do. That's... That's all we want... A choice, a chance.
- Lori Grimes: [Jenner looks over to Lori with tears in her eyes] Let us keep trying as long as we can.
- [the group find Jenner inside the shutter doors of the C.D.C. facility]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Why are you here? What do you want?
- Rick Grimes: A chance.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: That's asking an awful lot these days.
- Rick Grimes: I know.
- [Andrea asks Jenner if they're underground while inside the C.D.C. facility]
- Andrea: Are we underground?
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Are you claustrophobic?
- Andrea: A little.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Try not to think about it.
- [Rick whispers to Lori in bed as she cries]
- Rick Grimes: [Lori sniffles] We don't have to be afraid anymore. We're safe here. All right?
- [Lori cries after nearly being taken advantage of by Shane]
- [the group sees Jenner at the breakfast table in the morning]
- Dale Horvath: Doctor, I don't mean to slam you with questions first thing...
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: But you will anyway.
- Andrea: [Andrea looks to Jenner] We didn't come here for the eggs.
- [Jenner tells the group there's nothing out there but a brutal life and agonizing death]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: You know what's out there... A short, brutal life and an agonizing death.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks to Andrea] Your... Your sister... What was her name?
- Andrea: Amy.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Amy. You know what this does. You've seen it.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks to Rick] Is that really what you want for your wife and son?
- Rick Grimes: I don't want this!
- [Jenner looks at the photograph of his wife on the desk]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: I did the best I could in the time that I had. I hope you'd be proud of that. We always think there's gonna be more time...
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [when the power generator to the C.D.C. shuts down] ... Then it runs out.
- [first lines]
- Shane Walsh: [in a flashback, Shane tries asking the soldiers and nurses for help to move Rick out of the hospital] Hey, hey. Whoa, whoa. Ma'am. Ma'am, please. Please, can you help me?
- Nurse: [the nurse continues running off] No, no!
- [Carol and Lori walk through the housing area of the C.D.C. facility]
- Carol Peletier: [Carol looks to Lori] This is the first night we might actually get some real sleep.
- Lori Grimes: Hmm.
- Carol Peletier: [Carol smiles looking to Sophia] It's a miracle, isn't it?
- [the group sees Jenner terminate the brain of TS-19 in its playback]
- Carol Peletier: [as a bullet passes through the brain] God. What was that?
- Andrea: He shot his patient in the head. Didn't you?
- [as Jenner remains silent]
- [Rick asks for Jenner to open the doors now]
- Rick Grimes: Hey, Jenner, open that door now.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: There's no point. Everything topside is locked down. The emergency exits are sealed.
- Dale Horvath: Well, open the damn things.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: [Jenner looks to Rick] That's not something I control. The computers do. I told you once that front door closed, it wouldn't open again. You heard me say that. It's better this way.
- [Carol tells Jenner that her daughter doesn't deserve to die like this]
- Carol Peletier: [Carol cries] This isn't right. You can't just keep us here.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: One tiny moment... A millisecond. No pain.
- Carol Peletier: [Carol holds Sophia crying] My daughter doesn't deserve to die like this.
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: Wouldn't it be kinder, more compassionate to just hold your loved ones and wait for the clock to run down?
- [Rick holds the shotgun over Shane after their struggle together]
- Rick Grimes: Are you done now? Are you done?
- Shane Walsh: Yeah, I guess we all are.
- [T-Dog tries to get Jacqui to leave the C.D.C facility]
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: Let's go. Let's go.
- Jacqui: No, no, I'm staying. I'm staying, sweetie.
- Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas: But that's insane!
- Jacqui: [Jacqui with tears in her eyes] No, it's completely sane. For the first time in a long time. I'm not ending up like Jim and Amy. There's no time to argue and no point, not if you want to get out. Just get out. Get out.
- [Dale tries to get Andrea to leave the C.D.C. facility]
- Dale Horvath: Andrea, this isn't what Amy would want for you.
- Andrea: She's dead, and you need to leave.
- [Jenner and Jacqui watch the camera monitor of Rick and the group getting out]
- Dr. Edwin Jenner: They got out.
- [Jenner looks to Jacqui as she smiles]
- [last lines]
- Dale Horvath: [the group prepares to drive off from the fallen C.D.C. facility, as Dale helps Andrea up] Come on. Come on.
- Glenn Rhee: [Glenn opens the RV door] Come on. Come on. Get in, get in, get in! Get in!
- [as the group begins to slowly drive off together]
