Twists, turns and a fire cracking ending!
jasonpaul793 April 2024
Who doesn't like a gritty British crime drama?

Intense drama from Andrew Lee Potts debut Firecracker. Powerful performances and a scene stealing end performance from Katie Sheridan.

Stella cast including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Nick Moran and Jason Flemyng.

I could also see this working as a theatre piece with its tense dialogue and close up performances, all taking place within the vicinity of an empty house. Similar to The first 'Saw' movie but with less blood!

Great writing, cinematography and soundtrack and I look forward to seeing what Andrew Lee Potts imagination creates next!

Suspense, twists, heartfelt moments, and a good few laughs
oodpower-fun1 March 2024
Honestly, thrillers aren't really my go-to genre of film, but Firecracker is absolutely brilliant. For me, the whole film had the perfect balance of suspense and drama along with well placed humour and sometimes absolute raw emotion.

The casting was excellent - Kate Sheridan is absolutely brilliant as perhaps the most complex character. She delivers so many different sides to her character Matilda and it's an absolute pleasure to watch. Andrew Lee Potts is excellent also as Jack, the half of the "dangerous duo" who had a lot of layers - he plays a conflicted, likeable baddie really well!

Eloise Lovell Anderson as Lena was a downright terrifying psychopath (and she should take that as a compliment!) - she really made the suspense shoot up, I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the film. While not the most layered character for me, she was definitely the scariest and was excellently portrayed in her essential role in the film. Not every character needs to be complex, and she was absolutely brilliant as the darkest character, and sometimes delivered some dark humour too, even just in her body language.

I loved seeing Jason Flemyng right at the start, one of my all time favourite actors (along with Andrew) and enjoyed his role as the detective, the softness he portrayed towards the end was a nice touch for the audience as a way to wind down after the thrill ride of the main part of the story. I also cheered when I saw Nick Moran pop up on screen - as my favourite film is Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, it was really great to see Tom and Eddie back on screen together, even if they didn't share a scene. As always, Nick played a brilliant baddie!

The use of a small(ish) and simple setting - the majority of the film sees only three characters in one mostly empty house - is done with great skill and attention to detail. No part of the set is left unused (even the loft) - it's so creative and interesting, and the layout of the house and how it's used just adds to the suspense of the film. The house itself is a main character, which is something I really like in a film. It reminded me a bit of a play, with a closed set and nowhere for the characters to escape from the audience, so you feel like you're really in there with them.

The emotion in the film was also really well done - I found myself in floods of tears towards the end as I cared about the characters and felt like I really knew them, and it was wonderful to lose myself in the emotion while the story was wrapping up. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I absolutely loved the ending to Ruth's little side story, played wonderfully by Linda-Jean Barry.

I loved the comedy moments too - there was some good physical comedy I felt as well as some excellent dialogue. The police officers made me laugh out loud (I won't be able to see the blue lights now without cracking a smile)

There are no spoilers in this review, but the twists were absolutely brilliant. Some of them I guessed but some of them I really didn't see coming. I'm already looking forward to a rewatch so I can see if I can spot some foreshadowing earlier on!

Overall the film was brilliant - maybe a little slow to build up to what's going on, but it does build the suspense when you're not too sure what's going on but you're finding out along the way. However the line (not a spoiler as it's literally the first line) "Matilda Watson's dead" really hooks you in and so much suspense is generated by constantly wondering how and when she dies. It was an absolutely genius move.

Firecracker is a rollercoaster of emotions - one minute you're on the edge of your seat, then you're laughing, then you're wanting the bad guys to get caught, then you're crying, then you're wanting the bad guys to succeed... it played with the audience's emotions in just the right way, just as a well written, directed and acted film should do. In my opinion, Firecracker is an absolute perfect example of fantastic independent filmmaking. I'll eagerly await the next production from Keychain!

If this were in theaters, I'd get my money back
cliff-545672 March 2024
The plot, the acting, the score... It's all so bad it's sad. Not the "funny because it's terrible" kind of bad... Just the, I will forever regret the 32 minutes it took me to realize I made a grave mistake by trusting the imdb rating for this film kind of bad.

It's also the "I made an account just to write a review" kind of bad...

After this, I'll be searching how to get a refund. No amount of alcohol can make this stale film watchable.

If you want your kids to stop watching TV and go play outside, play this movie.

If you suffer from insomnia, play this movie.

This bad review is my good deed for 2024.

What a debut. Well Done Andrew Lee Potts
AmyCRy-9326 February 2024
A fantastic debut from Andrew directing. Can't get over the contrast between his acting from watching him as geeky heroic Connor in Primeval to hard hitting oddly nice guy Jack in this film.

Character development throughout is incredibly done. Chemistry between the cast is awesome as well.

Writing is great, it's well paced not to fast not to slow, the twists and turns had my jaw hitting the floor more than once.

Honestly you would never be able to tell this was small budget film as its shot so well, the music throughout makes it even intense which for me makes a movie.

Phenomenal for a first movie.

Cannot wait to see more of Andrew's work in the future.

Suspense with a touch of dark humor
bphuettner26 February 2024
"Firecracker" starts with a bang (literally) and maintains the suspense throughout. The bulk of the movie focuses on our two villains and their hostage ensconced in an otherwise empty house on Bonfire night. That's the same as Guy Fawkes night, similar to the US 4th of July in that everyone is expected to light off fireworks and make a lot of noise. Bits of backstory are blended in through some nicely done flashbacks, a few telephone conversations, and occasional visitors to the house. While there is certainly plenty of violence, cruelty, and death, it is not excessively gory. There's a steady tension throughout, and several really surprising twists in both plot and character exposition.

Brilliant, Dark, Fantastic Heist
taryndragon25 February 2024
Firecracker is the first feature-length film directed by Andrew Lee Potts, and it is a fantastic debut.

The story takes place on Bonfire Night, and follows Jack (Potts) and Lena (Eloise Lovell Anderson) in a brazen heist. Under the pretense of looking to buy a house, the couple meets with real estate agent, Mathilda (Katie Sheridan), who becomes their unwitting hostage. Through the course of the night, the characters are on a roller coaster of events with many twists and turns, and the audience is along for the ride.

The tension, present from the opening scene, continues to ramp up as the story progresses, leaving the viewer in breathless anticipation of what will happen next. The gripping score takes that suspense up even further.

Potts has a unique storytelling style, and it really shines throughout the movie. The screenplay is well-written and engaging. The cast has excellent chemistry, and the appearances of Jason Flemyng, Alexander Vlahos, and Nick Moran add a certain appeal that makes the viewer take notice.

10/10 - Highly recommend.

Andrew Lee Potts Electrifies
Silverbullet8828 February 2024
I had the pleasure of reviewing Andrew Lee Potts' thriller Firecracker. All I can say is wow. Potts certainly outdoes your expectations in his directorial outing. It's said first impressions are the most important. Andrew Lee has proven himself onscreen in various projects that showcase his acting chops such as The Witcher, Syfy's miniseries Alice, and Primeval. He delivers again with Firecracker; his directorial debut. All of the right choices are made here; from the stylistic cinematography, to scoring and editing. Also fans of his work are in for a treat, with Andrew Lee Potts in front of-and behind-the camera!

The story concerns a trio of misfits-including Jack (portrayed by an electrifying Andrew Lee Potts) following a heist gone sideways against the thrilling backdrop of Bonfire Night. Potts more than holds his own pulling double duty as actor and director, and proves himself worthy of the task. I hope to see more projects helmed by Andrew, and others like him with a keen eye on the pulse of filmmaking.

Definitely check this out!

Achieves the impossible
drytheriver29 February 2024
I'm so used to seeing rubbish from Indy british films that I thought this wasn't possible - a genuinely original, well made, clever, scary and funny genre film.

Brilliantly acted and stylishly shot it's a film that carves a path of it's own through indy cinema. Potts plays a likeable psychopath who, along with the magnetically insane Lena, takes Mathilda, hostage, played in virtuoso style by the brilliant Katie Sheridan. Coming to full maturity as a great actress, Sheridan nails the subtleties and subterfuge that the script demands, ensuring every twist and turn is indeed a surprise. She's matched by Potts, who spews wry comments and acidic lines with pro comic timing and bad-boy-band good looks. It's a film that proves brilliant actors are still working on the indie scene, and a stellar ensemble cast shines out the screen. Top marks go to Nicole Pattinson as a snarky cop and Nick Moran as a scary villain. Totally recommended!

Very Well Done, Definitely See It!
kadroll28 February 2024
Andrew Lee Potts has always been very skilled at choosing great film projects to get involved with. He's written, directed, produced and starred in some outstanding short films and a fun, innovative web series. So, when he announced he was making his first feature length film, I had no doubt it was also going to be fantastic... and I was right. He, Katie Sheridan and Tamara Al-Bassam wrote one of the most original suspense films I've seen in quite a while. The constant twists and turns along with unexpected character developments and.zero lulls in the plot keeps you glued to the screen right up until the very end, and I mean that literally... keep watching until the very end. Outstanding film quality, outstanding story and an outstanding cast! Definitely see it.

Homerun Debut; Suspense fueled by Surprises.
donaldanderson-787355 March 2024
Firecracker is more than the name of the film, it's an adjective for it. I take my hat off to Mr. Potts and the entire team. The writing trio has woven a story that creates suspense and reveals surprises that are not "cheats". By that I mean, many of them are unforeseen but credible and sensible. We just did not see them coming! That's a gem of a quality in screenwriting - the things we love but without cliches.

I found the acting to be wonderful throughout, with all of the actors through each of the characters and, since most of the weight is carried by the "big three", their stellar performances win the day. But all and each of the cast deserve high praise. As does the crew. I especially valued the quality of the Lighting .... great team there!

Andrew Potts has earned for himself solid praise in this accomplishment - as a very fine actor, a terrific writer and storyteller, and a marvelous filmmaker. I wish my company and I, Palm Haven Studios, had been involved! @palmhavenstudios And the highest praise I can sing is that, someday, I hope we do work together on a film project. That's putting one's money where one's mouth is.

Best wishes, Andrew and to your wonderful Team and colleagues!

PS: Watch This Film.

I highly recommended to anybody who's a big action fan. Andrew Lee Potts sold it from the get go from soon to finish. Max Wrottesley also a dark horse another name I must drop as he took is incredible too. A epic movie for any movement or date night. As I can assure you'll be asking questions about it as it's that outstanding. Plus ya feel for the characters too. I've given this a 10 for originality from start to finish. Impressive debut from Mr. Potts
brooke-14026 February 2024
Shot beautifully, story works well, great casting and solidly directed. Andrew Lee Potts's feature directing debut Firecracker is impressive to say the least. The script is tight and the A level talent helps move the story along. Great performances all around which is extra impressive given Mr. Potts also directed himself! Firecracker is a great contained story, an example to filmmakers everywhere that you can make a great film on a lower budget if the script is good and you have top tier talent all around to work with. Firecracker was a great watch and I highly recommend it. From across the pond!!

Full of surprises!
danielgordon-9830918 April 2024
Firecracker absolutely blew me away! From the start, this film grabs you and doesn't let go. The storyline is much more complex than I was expecting, and kept me on the edge of my seat through every twist and turn (and there are several). The director did an amazing job of keeping the pace brisk and suspenseful, and the score matched it perfectly. What really tied everything together for me were the performances. The leads like Andrew Lee Potts really brought the characters to life, and it was so cool to see Jason Flemyng and Nick Moran in the same movie for the first time in a long time! You'll never guess the ending...

Tense Crime Drama
livemanc25 February 2024
A tense and gripping crime thriller. Predominantly set within the one house, director Andrew Lee Potts utilises as much of the location as possible and creates a palpable nervous energy in scenes where the villains might get caught, with some shots straight from the Hitchcock playbook (and that's a good thing!).

It's has twitsts that you probably will not see coming and keeps you riveted throughout.

All the cast excell, particularly the lead trio (Potts even manages to make us like a really nasty character!) and it's shot excellently. While only in the film relatively briefly, Jason Flemying and Nick Moran are as superb as always.

Highly recommended.

Suspense and action all the way
browndaniel-526392 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Firecracker is exactly what this film is. On fireworks night, estate agent Matilda is showing a couple around a house, a house in which Tom was burned to death by Jack and Lena. Matilda is then held hostage by Jack and Lena. Their objective is to retrieve some incriminating evidence from a hidden safe, for their client called Knight. In it, Knight confesses that he was responsible for a fire at a laboratory, which killed a child. I won't spoil it for you anymore, but there are plenty of twists, which surprised me. The acting was of a high standard, with great tension throughout. Highly recommend it.
