Watch the final episode of this wonderful series.
I've reviewed a select few of the episodes of "Better Things," in part because I didn't discover the show until halfway through its second season (and then went back and binge-watched all the episodes that I'd missed on Hulu), and partly because it soon became clear that most of my reviews would just be full of fawning, sloppy praise/prose. Gushing praise for the co-creator, principal writer/director and star of the series, Pamela Adlon. Praise for the three young actresses portraying her character's daughters; praise for the occasional appearances by actors such as Kevin Pollack (as the Adlon character's brother), Rosalind Chao as his wife, Celia Imrie (as her character's mum) and Diedrich Bader (as one of her best friends). This final episode even throws in a kind of "call-back" to a Danny Trejo guest spot earlier this season and a couple of fun segments featuring criminally underrated actor John Ortiz (I know you'll recognize him). And it begins with a visually and sonically quite innovative segment starring the youngest of the daughters, played by Olivia Edward, which is thrilling and surprising to see. That's the thing about "Better Things": every time an episode would start (and/or sometimes end) with a bit that was so surprising and then equally thrilling, it would make me think two things: First, simply I love this show! And second, why can't more TV shows surprise and thrill me like this one does? Is it just that Pamela Segall Adlon is a frickin' genius (I know she'd laugh if anybody came out and told her this right to her face), or that so few creative geniuses like her are involved in any way in network/basic-cable television, or what? I don't know, and I guess I don't really care. We have her, and for five stellar seasons it was great.
