The star of 1923 and Shrinking turned 81 on July 13, 2024, but he seems to have no intention of slowing down. That's no surprise since he has been a hard worker for his entire life.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

Steve Carell has been responsible for some of the funniest characters on the big and small screen this century. Brick Tamland in Anchorman, Michael Scott in The Office, Gru in Despicable Me, Mark R. Naird in Space Force — the list goes on. Now, per THR's reporting, Carell is set to add another notch to his funnyman belt with a starring role in a new HBO comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Scrubs' Matt Tarses.
The victor of a multi-platform bidding war, HBO have ordered the as-yet-untitled show straight-to-series, with a 10-episode first season in development. Lawrence and Tarses, who are currently hard at work on Apple TV's upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy series Bad Monkey, are set to write the first episode of this show, a single-camera comedy set on a college campus that centres around the complicated relationship between an author (presumably Carell) and his daughter.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

Hallmark Channel continues to expand its scripted series content with The Chicken Sisters. The upcoming original series is based on Kj Dell’Antonia’s bestselling 2020 novel. Variety was the first to report the news. The Chicken Sisters will star Lea Thompson, Genevieve Angelson, Schuyler Fisk, and Wendie Malick. The show, which will consist of eight episodes, is currently in production now and will air later this year. The Goldbergs and Shrinking EP Annie Mebane is serving as both executive producer and showrunner. There will be plenty of drama and romance in The Chicken Sisters. The series is a family drama set in the fictional town of Merinac, “where a generations-old rift between dueling fried chicken restaurants – Mimi’s and Frannie’s – has left the founders’ families fractured and the locals taking sides.” A popular cooking show comes to town, which only complicates the town tension. “Annie Mebane blew us away...

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.

Oscar winner Brie Larson is Elizabeth Zott, a lab technician in the 1960s who takes up a gig as the host of a cooking show and uses her position to educate women about scientific topics. “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg adapted Bonnie Garmus‘ book of the same name. Critics were effusive in their praise of the show.
Peter Travers (ABC News) wrote: “This fierce, funny and vital series tackles a mid-century battle for women’s rights through the eyes of a chemist—an Emmy-bound Brie Larson—who uses a local TV cooking show to lead the charge.”
Cristina Escobar (Roger Ebert) noted: “Lee Eisenberg crafts an aspirational fairytale, building a positively lovely universe and central heroine to spend eight episodes with.

Everything old is new again when it comes to TV detective shows. First, Natasha Lyonne did her best Columbo on Peacock’s quirky Poker Face, then Clive Owen resurrected iconic gumshoe Sam Spade on AMC’s sleek Monsieur Spade. Now Colin Farrell is taking a shot at the old-school private eye game with Apple TV+’s Sugar — and what do you know, this one works, too. A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar (premiering Friday, Apr. 5; I’ve seen four of the eight episodes) doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel…...

Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" is his masterpiece in between masterpieces. The legendary filmmaker wrapped principal photography in late February 1973, just one month before he would win the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for "The Godfather" (Albert Ruddy took home the Best Picture Oscar as the mafia classic's producer). Had Paramount released the film that year, it almost certainly would've received nominations for Best Picture and Director (over the wholly forgotten "A Touch of Class"), giving Coppola three consecutive nods in the latter category, a feat only accomplished once in Academy Awards history (by William Wyler). Instead, he wound up competing against himself a year later, when he added three more Oscars to his trophy case with "The Godfather Part II."
While "The Godfather" movies placed him atop Hollywood's director A-list for the rest of the decade, some cinephiles believe "The Conversation" is the superior film. The...

The original Star Wars trilogy was one of the shining examples of groundbreaking films of the 70s and 80s that changed cinema forever. The film series introduced audiences to a galaxy far, far away, and featured visuals and sci-fi narratives that have never been done before up to that point. The franchise also saw the origins of characters that have now become iconic characters.

Actors like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher became synonymous with the Star Wars roles Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia, respectively. It has now been reported that the casting director responsible for bringing the trio together, Dianne Crittenden, has sadly passed away.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, in our Season 4 premiere, we survey the comedy field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s time for the premiere edition of Emmy Experts Typing. For Season 4 of our weekly conversation series, the stakes have never been higher and the guest stars are bigger than ever? Ok, not really — at least in the drama categories, hey-o! But we’ll spend the next several months cycling through the top races in comedy, drama and limited series, starting today with the shows that prove music laughter is the best medicine. Or, well, maybe not since “The Bear” is the runaway favorite already here and very well could repeat its 2023 (2024) Emmy wins in 2024 (2024). Apple TV+ had announced it will expand its award-winning comedy slate with a new 10-episode comedy starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson and created, written by and executive produced by Jason Keller (“Ford v Ferrari”). Starring Wilson in the lead role, the comedy follows Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom. Hailing from Apple Studios, the untiled series will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, and executive produced by Propagate Content’s Ben Silverman (“The Office”), Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady (upcoming “Ripley” and “The Fall Guy”), Piece of Work’s Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy, Chris Moynihan, Keller and Wilson. Apple TV+ is taking a shot at another sports-related comedy.
The streamer behind Ted Lasso has placed a series order for a show starring Owen Wilson as a former pro golfer who needs to get his life back in order. The Loki star will also be an executive producer of the untitled series, which comes from Apple Studios and creator Jason Keller (Ford v. Ferrari).
Wilson will play Pryce Cahill, whose golf career ended prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at a sporting goods store in Indiana and his wife leaves him, Pryce sees a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom as his way back.
The series seems to echo Ted Lasso in its sports-world setting and the possibility of a redemption arc for its main character. It will join a comedy roster at Apple TV+ that also includes Shrinking, Platonic, Loot and the upcoming Palm Royale.

While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs.
