- After a huge night of competition in which the four semifinalists performed three dances each, Tuesday night's elimination would determine which three celebrities would have one last chance at the mirror ball trophy.
Play it again: Head judge Len Goodman asked to see Mya & Dmitry perform their perfect salsa for an encore.
To the tape: Highlights from backstage Monday included Kelly admitting that she made up her entire solo because she forgot it. Joanna said she would treasure the judges' comments forever after Carrie Ann Inaba said she'd love to see her in the final. Donny said that he was "mad" that he "blew it" after the wardrobe mishap in his first dance. Mya was a touch uncomfortable with Len commenting on her "tooty-fruity booty."
To the results: Psych! No results yet.
Be our guest: In an interesting bit of promotion, the dance floor was taken over by a live rendition of a dance routine to "Be Italian" from the upcoming movie "Nine." Later, Alicia Keys stopped by to perform her new single, "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart", off her new album "The Element of Freedom." Leona Lewis then took the stage to perform her his single "Happy" from her upcoming album, "Echo".
Finally, the two surviving Bee Gees, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary as performers, performed "You Should Be Dancing". Past contestant Melissa Rycroft joined her former partner Tony Dovolani and pros Chelsie Hightower and Cheryl Burke.
To the results, really: Monday night's highest scoring couples, Joanna & Derek and Mya & Dmitry, were called down to center stage. Host Tom Bergeron announced that Mya & Dmitry were in the finals. Joanna & Derek's fate would be decided later.
Kelly & Louis and Donny & Kym were called to the stage and Tom announced that Donny & Kym advanced to the finals.
Finally, it came down to Joanna & Derek and Kelly & Louis standing at center stage waiting for word on which couple would take the last spot in the final. Len said Kelly had been "wonderful," and Joanna had been one of the most consistent of all the couples. "Whoever goes will be sadly missed," Len said.
The couple with the lowest combined point total and coming up one week short of the final was ... Joanna & Derek. In a break from tradition, rather than dance a quick last dance, Joanna & Derek reprised their Viennese waltz from Monday night.
