I normally try to be optimistic or forgiving when I critic, but this movie has only made me feel apathy and total confusion by the end of it. I can only rate it this highly, because the actors are generally very good, you see the movie at least tried to look good and some of the jokes actually did land for me.
The premise delivers what you would expect to happen in a plot about "suddenly hearing other peoples thoughts", but nothing more. There just didn't seem to be any experimentation with said premise. No creative or original ideas were implemented.
Unexpected was the blunt ending. After most of the drawn-out 90% of the film, where the plot didn't seem to evolve, all of a sudden the last 5 minutes seemed to solve any problems the protagonist had. The protagonist didn't seem to change her personality for the whole film, but suddenly changes her character, just because shes heard a few negative thoughts of her relatives. Most egregious was how the film tried to solve family drama in a 1 minute scene, by letting the protagonist tell the others what they have to do or how she is sorry for not having been a good grandma. It fails to satisfyingly conclude the different characters development.
Or the protagonists doctor-friend story arc was leading nowhere. Like she existed to just be the shoulder angel or the good conscience for the protagonist. I half expected the two of them were going to be girlfriends, because there was quite a big focus on their "friendship". Turns out, it only resulted in her being a plot device, to half-ass a reason for the protagonist to suddenly change.
There is also the unexplained inconsistency of why the protagonist wasnt able to hear some family members thoughts and the reasoning the protagonist tries to come up for it is illogical.
Sadly the movie is an underwhelming and uninspired story with no actual profound message to convey.
