Brillante Mendoza has a killer work ethic: the Filipino director made nine films between 2005's "Masahista" and 2009's "Lola," the latter of which, along with Cannes in-competition entry "Kinatay" the same year, really launched him into the major leagues of international helmers. He's taken an uncharacteristic two-and-a-half year break, but returned this week at the Berlin Film Festival with "Captive," a gripping, Herzogian drama that should see him reach his widest audience yet, thanks to the presence of international star Isabelle Huppert. Not long after talking to Mme. Huppert (read that interview here), we were able to sit down with Mendoza to discuss the film, how Huppert took to his creative process, and where he's planning to go from here. One of the things I found most impressive about "Captive" is not so much what you include in the film but what you exclude. The fact that it is very controlled.

Festival scene regular Brillante Mendoza is certainly a divisive filmmaker with his shaky-cam, documentary-like sensibilities. Like Hong Sang-soo has evidently uncovered, if you're a filmmaker who frequents Cannes with success, you're likely to catch the eyes of French-thesp Isabelle Huppert who's starring in the helmer's latest effort, "Captive." Based on the true story of the 2001 kidnapping of 20 hotel guests from the island of Palawan in the Philippines by the group known as Abu Sayyaf with Huppert playing a foreign missionary who is caught up in it all. While the clips are in Filipino with French subtitles, you can the sense of the film's about and Mendoza's style which, if anything, seems suited to story like this. Other than Huppert, we also spotted Mendoza's "Lola" star Rustica Carpio among the chaos with Maria Isabel Lopez, Mercedes Cabral and Joel Torre co-starring. "Captive," in fact, premiered at the...

After a brief foray into quieter terrain with his 2009 feature "Lola," Filipino director Brillante Mendoza returns to the provocative territory of his 2009 shocker "Kinatay" with "Captive," another grim kidnapping story, this one far weaker in terms of both shock and quality. A dramatization of the 2001 incident in which Muslim terrorist group Abu Sayyaf took numerous people hostage from an island resort, the movie follows them through nearly a year of hellacious wanderings through the Filipino jungle. At two hours, the best thing that can be said about "Captive" is that it makes you feel the sheer longevity that the hostages had to endure, but that's not enough to salvage this mercilessly redundant thriller. At first, Mendoza's typically intense shaky-cam style holds promise; the initial rounding up of hostages and the ensuing initiation by their captors maintains a basic level of intrigue. Fiercely devoted to their cause,...

Now that the fall “awards festival” circuit is finally at a close — but with Sundance looming in the distance — it’s easy to forget about Biff — the Berlin International Film Festival, that is. (See, I even have to give the name.) This might have something to do with their less-than-huge lineup; in terms of films playing in competition, last year’s biggest art house title was The Turin Horse, while the most mainstream was probably Margin Call. Nothing too slim, but not much compared to Cannes, Venice, or Tiff.
The first round of titles to play this coming February (via Twitch) do carry a few major titles, though. Among them are The Flowers of War (which we were quite ecstatic about), Guy Maddin‘s Keyhole, Extremely Loud…, Kevin Macdonald‘s Bob Marley documentary, and an expansion of Werner Herzog‘s Into the Abyss. Apart from the classic auteurs in the Special Presentations section, the 39th Festival du nouveau cinéma will be filled to the gills in new works from across the globe. I view the extremely popular film festival as sort of a B-side for film festival circuit items that generally find a spot in a major film fest such as Cannes and afterwards would normally fall through the cracks. Think the Nyff's much wilder, Canadian cousin. Over 295 films - this includes shorts, fiction and documentary, animation, retrospectives, tributes, professional panels, outdoor interactive installations, the festival which takes place between the 13th to the 24th of October, furiously promotes not only world talent, but local French Canadian filmmakers. Among the notable titles, we have Michelangelo Frammartino's Le Quattro volte, Olivier Assayas' Carlos and Alex de la Iglesia's The Last Circus and Wang Bing will be in town for a Master Class for Venice-winning The Ditch.

Clearly Isabelle Huppert has a thing for Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza. It was not so long ago (May of 2009 to pinpoint the year) where Huppert and her Cannes jury peers awarded Mendoza with the Best Director award for Kinatay (the pressed hissed at that selection) and now, she'll venture off to the Philippines, sometime next year, to star in a picture that will most likely be a brutal drama if we go by the title and the director's previous work. According to this source, the pair of been keeping in touch for a while. Captured would tell the story about a foreign missionary (Huppert) who is caught up in a hostage-taking of foreign nationals by Philippine group Abu Sayyaf (which would include Philippine actor Coco Martin). The project sort of reminds me of the character she played in another hostile land in Claire Denis' White Material. French producer Didier Costet...

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

One of the gems I screened at the Tribeca Film Festival this year was Brilliante Mendoza’s “Lola”. This is the latest film from the Filipino filmmaker who, for me, came out of nowhere. His breakout film, from 2008 was “Kinatay” (Butchered) was in competition in the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Mendoza won Prix de la Mise en Scene (Best Director) for Kinatay during the festival. Moreover “Kinatay” was the first Filipino film accepted for competition for Cannes since 1984. Going into this film, I had huge expectations for the success of it. And my word, it does deliver.
“Lola” (Grandmother) is the story of a random act of violence and how it’s affected by the grandmother’s of those involved. The film starts with Lola Sepa who is traveling through the mean streets of Manlia with her grandson. They are on their way to make an appointment. When the picture starts,...

Not the knockout punch of his previous Kinatay or Serbis but an unvarnished look into the inner-workings of a world forced to brutality The third major work of Cannes auteur Brillante Mendoza, .Lola. had big shoes to fill. It had to match the simmering anger and seething underbelly pungency of .Serbis. and .Kinatay.. Although it may lack some of the raw energy of those films it brings a dialog about right and wrong to the screen that has never been said better. The film starts with the tragic death of Lola.s son by stabbing. As the report goes, her son was killed for his cell phone in the violent suburbs of Manila. The viewer knows there was probably...

Alex Gibney's latest documentary, a portrait of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 because of a sex scandal, will be spotlighted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 21 to May 2 in New York.
The currently untitled film from the director of the Oscar-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," will screen as a work-in-progress as one of three special events that festival organizers unveiled today.
"I think people will be really surprised," said David Kwok, the festival's director of programming. "It doesn't just focus on the scandal. It's more comprehensive than that, looking at Eliot Spitzer as a person and at his entire career."
Also playing in the fest's Special Events section are David Lean's 1965 epic "Doctor Zhivago," marking its 45th anniversary with a new restoration that will be released by Warner Home Video, and a work-in-progress screening of the doc "The Western Front,...

Venice (Reuters) - The Venice film festival closes on Saturday with the award of the Golden Lion for best picture, and U.S. director Todd Solondz is a favorite for his comedy "Life During Wartime" as is the harrowing war movie "Lebanon."
Michael Moore's attack on corporate greed in "Capitalism: A Love Story" struck a chord with audiences and the public, as did fashion designer Tom Ford with his debut feature "A Single Man" starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.
Also among the frontrunners were "Lourdes," an examination of miracles and faith, "The Road," an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel, Fatih Akin's madcap comedy "Soul Kitchen" and Iranian protest drama "Women Without Men."
But with film festival juries notoriously difficult to second-guess, including this year's panel led by two-time Golden Lion winner Ang Lee, critics believe the race for the top prize in 2009 is wide open.
