Opening with archival footage of Drew Struzan painting the original poster for Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, tells the life-story of an artist that as iconic to my generation as the films themselves. An artist whose work actually graced more films that I imagined and an artist whose work has inspired a new generation of illustrators, even though the poster medium as Drew knew it, is dead.
Starting at the very beginning, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster tells the story of how Struzan who grew up with a family who didn’t love him, his struggles at art school and his early “poor starving artist” years in which he tried to develop his art and support his family.

However, he has continued to produce new works since, including a recent Comic-Con poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2.
According to Schmoes Know, Episode VII director Jj Abrams has persuaded Struzan to come back to the space sage to create new artwork.

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"The World's End"
What's It About? The third installment of Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, following 2004's "Shaun of the Dead" and 2007's "Hot Fuzz," "The World's End" features a group of five reuniting friends. They embark on an epic drinking marathon in an effort to top their pub crawl from 20 years prior, only this time an unexpected alien invasion strikes.
Why We're In: A refreshing blend of comedy and sci-fi, "The World's End" is the perfectly charming film to spoof the apocalypse genre and keep you endlessly entertained. Plus, it features hilarious (as always) performances from Wright staples Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.

Even as a new wave of movie poster artists (most notably not hired by Photoshop-happy studios) emerges, there is still one name that towers over all of them. That name is Drew. The man who was so poor growing up that he “drew on toilet paper with pencils” is now widely heralded as the greatest movie poster illustrator of all time, and now Drew Struzan is getting an unrepentantly celebratory documentary made about his work. Drew: The Man Behind The Poster looks like pure joy — a feature-length love fest for an artist that most certainly deserves it. As such, director Erik Sharkey and his team have organized one hell of a party steering committee. Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Frank Darabont, and many more all turn out to praise the man responsible for making you want to see a movie before you know anything else about it. It...

Sharkey Shines A Light On Struzen, Misses The Mark
There’s no doubt you’ve seen and at least admired the work of Drew Struzen. His meticulously painted film posters for Steven Spielberg alone have become iconic images of pop culture royalty, but the list doesn’t start or end there. It’s honestly a bit mind boggling when listed together – Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Shawshank Redemption, Harry Potter, The Muppets, you name it, he probably made the jaw dropping one sheet. Painting in broad, geometric strokes, director Erik Sharkey has worked together Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, a portrait of the artist that rains deservingly unanimous praise from the likes of George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Guillermo del Toro and Spielberg himself, but it’s possible that Struzen’s success doesn’t justify a feature length celebration that utterly fails to...

Despite its title, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster is not a documentary about movie poster artist Drew Struzan. Instead, Struzan's poster art is the film's real subject. Director Erik Sharkey uses testimonials from celebrities like Steven Spielberg and Michael J. Fox to lavish praise on Struzan's output. But these famous fans gush only generally about Struzan's iconic movie posters, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Thing, and all of the Star Wars films—they never explain just what about the man's work they find so resonant. Sharkey doesn't, either. Struzan's illustrations are, in fact, great because they have an aura of mystery about them. Actor Thomas Jane accidentally puts his finger on it when he describes Struzan's artwork...

Way back in August of 2010, we called your attention to a documentary called Drew: The Man Behind the Poster which is about the legendary Drew Struzan, the iconic poster artist we all know and love. Erik Sharkey along with Greg Boas and Charles Ricciardi are the filmmaking team behind the doc that features interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and so many more. This past May the production was looking for money on Kickstarter to help with post-production costs, and that goal was met. Then last week at Comic-Con a new trailer was unveiled, which you can watch below! Here's the new trailer for Erik Sharkey's Drew: The Man Behind the Poster from YouTube: Drew: The Man Behind the Poster is directed by up-and-coming American filmmaker Erik Sharkey, of a few shorts previously. “It’s not just an ad; it’s the first notes of the piece. It’s the beginning of the story.” That’s Michael J. Fox speaking about Drew Struzan‘s work and giving movie marketers everywhere a much-needed lesson. It’s not about slapping some poorly Photoshopped celebrity faces against a white space with a bad font; it’s about creating an indelible image that instantly makes someone want to see the movie. It’s imagery selling imagery. Now, the legendary artist is now the subject of a documentary from director Erik Sharkey, and that documentary has a trailer. Drew: The Man Behind the Poster features interviews with Guillermo Del Toro, Fox, Frank Darabont, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Tom Jane, and a bunch of other artists (including Stuzan himself). It’s a celebration of a master. It’s a thrilling idea, but that soundtrack helps out a bit, eh...

It's been a couple of years and a couple of Comic-Cons since the first clips from an unfinished documentary on the iconic poster artist Drew Struzan first surfaced. The film is now complete, and with that announcement comes a new trailer heralding the finished Drew: The Man Behind The Poster. If you ever hung a movie poster on your wall, there's a reasonable chance that it was by Drew Struzan, who George Lucas calls "the only collectible artist since World War II" (eat that, Charles Saatchi). Struzan has painted over 150 movie posters,* including the Back To The Future trilogy, John Carpenter's The Thing, First Blood, The Muppets, Et, The Goonies, Harry Potter, Blade Runner, and of course, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Plus, there are the game boxes (Indiana Jones And The Fate of Atlantis) and the book covers (Shadows Of The Empire, the Indiana Jones spin-offs)... Struzan must...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Comic-Con Sundays are typically light on horror, and this year is no exception although once again our favorite panel, "Supernatural", is heading to Hall H. Here are the genre highlights as well as info on the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.
One thing we can't stress enough is to keep checking the Sdcc website for updates as nothing's set in stone until the event actually starts happening.
10:00-11:00 Emily the Strange— Be a part of the Emily the Strange panel experience, where you have the chance to prove your knowledge of Strange and win prizes, learn what's new in Emily's oddball universe (including a sneak peek at the new Emily and the Strangers comic book series), and Q&A with Emily's creator Rob Reger, artist Buzz Parker, and writer Jessica Gruner. Drew Struzan is man about whom you should know, because even if you've somehow managed to go all this time without hearing his name you will still have fallen in love with his art. Over the last year or so we've been reporting on a new documentary based around legendary poster artist Drew Struzan called Drew: The Man Behind The Poster. It looks like it will be a great documentary especially for those of you like myself who really enjoy the art of movie posters. The doc includes interviews with George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Guillermo Del Toro, Steven Spielberg and many more.
We recently received an e-mail in behalf of the film's director Erik P. Sharkey saying that the film has been completely shot and edited. But he needs a little help completing it. In the middle of the sound mixing phase they ran out of money. Up until this point the movie has been completely self financed, now they are looking for an additional $8,000 to complete and polish up the movie so it can fianlly get released.

The documentary Drew: The Man Behind The Poster is nearly completed according to producer Charles Ricciardi. The film covers the career of poster artist Drew Struzan, whose work includes poster art for such film series, as Back To The Future, Indiana Jones and Star Wars.
Here is what director Erik Sharkey had to say,
"The only problem with having so many hours of interview footage with George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg, just to name a few, is deciding what to cut out. There are so many interesting stories."
Jeff Yorkes joined the production team this past fall to edit the film. This is good news because Jeff is a fan of Drew's work and has a sincere love for the material. In addition, Drew's son, Christian Struzan has joined the team.

Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Blade Runner, The Thing... the list goes on and on. Drew Struzan is one of the few "names" in movie posters. He is responsible for illustrating some of the most famous posters in cinema history and his work accomplishes what so many other movie posters fail to do, creating images so memorable that they become the key iconography of the films they represent. Frank Darabont, who hired Drew Struzan to create the posters for The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, later based the main character in The Mist on Struzan himself. In fact, The Mist Collector's Edition DVD includes an interesting 7 minute featurette called Drew Struzan: An Appreciation of An Artist. Now, the first trailer for a new feature-length Drew Struzan documentary, entitled Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, has been released. Watch the trailer after the jump: As much as I love his work,...

Even if you don't know who Drew Struzan is (and if you don't, shame on you), you certainly know his work. The man has created some of the most iconic movie poster art this side of Saul Bass. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Back To The Future and Harry Potter among many, many others are just some of the creations he's worked up. While Struzan retired in 2008, his legacy continues with the upcoming documentary Drew: The Man Behind The Poster. Just the trailer alone features appearances...
