Exclusive: When Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn oversaw the then-titled HBO Max’s unscripted pipeline, the pair worked with Issa Rae and her production company Hoorae on series including Sweet Life: Los Angeles, which ran for two seasons and the reboot of Project Greenlight.
The trio are now getting the band back together after Rae’s Hoorae has struck a production partnership with O’Connell & Quinn’s Velvet Hammer Media.
The deal will see the two companies co-develop a range of unscripted series across genres including dating, social experiments and competition.
Velvet Hammer Media, which was founded last year, is behind series including The Big Bakeover for The CW and Empty Nest Refresh for Roku. The pair also introduced its Inside Access Program, which ensures there’s a line item in every production budget to hire exceptional Bipoc talent behind the camera and help them grow.

Issa Rae is getting candid about her thoughts on the current state of the entertainment industry.
In a cover story for Time magazine published online Thursday, the actress/writer/producer blamed Hollywood executives for going back on their promises to increase representation and diversity.
“I’ve never seen Hollywood this scared and clueless, and at the mercy of Wall Street,” Rae said, before later adding, “I’m sorry, but there aren’t a lot of smart executives anymore. And a lot of them have aged out and are holding on to their positions and refusing to let young blood get in.”
The Insecure star feels executives are getting too involved with the creative choices surrounding projects.
“Now these conglomerate leaders are also making the decisions about Hollywood. Y’all aren’t creative people. Stick to the money,” she said. “The people that are taking chances are on platforms like TikTok...

Issa Rae discusses how the television landscape is changing rapidly, especially regarding people of color in the industry.
Rae received wide recognition after creating, writing, and starring in HBO’s Insecure, which ran for five seasons on the premium cable network.
Since then, the media landscape has devolved, and Rae has noticed a trend where not only shows she’s produced, like Rap Sh!t, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and more, have been getting axed, but diversity seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
“It’s already happening,” she said in an interview with Net-a-Porter. “You’re seeing so many Black shows get cancelled, you’re seeing so many executives – especially on the Dei [diversity, equity and inclusion] side – get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority.”
Rae thinks that being more independent is the way to go, adding, “I am pessimistic,...

Amanda Scott is quite familiar with the art of pivoting, considering how much her life has changed over the past year. Back in August 2022, the "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" star happily celebrated the return of her Issa Rae-produced reality series - which followed an ambitious group of Black 20-somethings living in South LA - for its second season. However, something felt off. "If you go back and look, we didn't have a ton of promo for season two," Scott tells Popsugar. "So that already was like, 'What are y'all doing?'"
Then came the show's cancellation by Max (formerly HBO Max) in December. Scott says she and her castmates - Jerrold Smith II, Cheryl Des Vignes, Rob Lee, Briana Jones, Rebecca Magett, Tylynn Burns, Jaylenn Hart, P'Jae Compton, and Myami Woods - were all sad to hear the news because "we were just finding our footing.

Kamie Crawford has signed with CAA for representation. She continues to be represented by Range Media Partners and Brecheen, Feldman, Breimer, Silver, and Thompson.
Perhaps most known for her role as a host on MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show” (which she’s hosted since 2018), Crawford recently inked an overall deal with MTV Entertainment Studios in January and has since been named as the host of Paramount+’s “Are You The One?” and MTV’s “Ex on the Beach.” The former series, which ran for 8 seasons on MTV before jumping to the streamer, returned after three years off the air in January. She also hosted HBO Max’s “Sweet Life: Los Angeles” reunion special.
In addition to her onscreen work, Crawford also hosts her own podcast “Relationsh*t” on DearMedia, where she and her celebrity guests talk all-things-relationships and offer listeners advice using her relationship expertise. The podcast currently has more than 2.5 million downloads,...

Issa Rae hit the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday night in style for her final appearance on behalf of "Insecure." The multihyphenate stepped onto the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, where she recapped the legacy of her hit HBO series to People.
"I know that the lasting legacy is that we opened doors for a lot of creators, for a lot of talent, for the industry to view us, Black women, differently," she said on the Emmys red carpet. "I hope the legacy is that we go down as people's favorite show. I stand by that. For me, it was just about becoming a part of people's lives through the music, through the stories, through everything, and to hear that people miss it is so validating and fulfilling."
This year, Rae's "Insecure" snagged three Emmy nominations, including outstanding actress in a comedy series for the creator. "Insecure...

On July 12, Issa Rae was in the middle of a meeting, largely unaware that Emmy nominations were being announced. Then she received a text from “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and star Robin Thede, congratulating her on being nominated for lead actress in a comedy.
“I had a little squeal that I let out in the meeting, and then kept it pushing, but I was happy,” Rae says.
And there was plenty to be happy about. In addition to her solo recognition, “Insecure” nabbed two other noms for editor Nena Erb and cinematographer Ava Berkofsky, plus “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which Rae executive produces under her Hoorae multimedia banner alongside Thede, earned five nominations.
Despite two previous lead actress noms, Rae admits she was skeptical about being recognized this cycle, given that “Insecure” aired its fifth and final season in December 2021. But there wasn’t a ton of...

Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. has commissioned 149 hours of new and returning lifestyle shows in the U.K.
The programs include “The Big Body Clinic,” “The Edinburgh Auction House” and “Charlotte Church’s Dream Build,” and will air on Discovery’s stable of U.K. linear channels. They will also be made available on streaming service Discovery+.
The sheer volume of unscripted commissions for Warner Bros. Discovery’s linear channels in the U.K. sends a clear signal that the unscripted pipeline for the combined Discovery+ and HBO Max platform — when it does eventually launch — will largely stem from the Discovery side of operations.
Discovery+ launched in the U.K. in November 2020, but HBO Max has yet to roll out, due to the legacy output deal between HBO and Sky, which sews up the vast majority of HBO and some HBO Max content for Sky channels and its SVOD service Now TV.

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. What is going to happen to the unscripted department at HBO Max? It’s a question that the TV industry had been asking before Discovery and WarnerMedia even tied the knot in April to become Warner Bros. Discovery. But after recently crossing the 100-day post-merger-mark and approaching the company’s second quarter earnings reveal next Thursday, the question is being raised more and more by those outside and within the David Zaslav-run company — which has more cooks in its unscripted programming kitchen than it needs — especially if it’s still intent on hitting its promised 3 billion cost-saving synergies over the next three years, and working to reduce its approximately 55 billion debt load on a market cap of 36.3 billion.

The coming-of-age comedy series will continue to follow Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her ongoing struggles as she navigates high school. Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher executive produce the series, with Fisher also serving as co-creator, showrunner and writer. “Never Have I Ever” is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and executive produced by 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and David Miner.

When this year’s Producers Guild of America Awards are handed out, along with those being recognized for their achievements in projects over the last year will be a handful of the industry’s top names, receiving the guild’s Honorary Awards.
These Honorary Awards were not handed out during last year’s virtual ceremony, adding more excitement to this year’s in-person event.
The 2022 Visionary Award, which recognizes a television, film or new media producer for unique or uplifting contributions to our culture through inspiring storytelling or performance, will be awarded to Issa Rae. The producer-actor-writer, whose HBO series “Insecure” wrapped up this year after five seasons, also served as executive producer on “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and “Sweet Life: Los Angeles,” to name a few of her credits.

I can't think of anyone more deserving of receiving the key to their city than Issa Rae. On Feb. 12, the "Insecure" creator became the first person to ever receive the key to Inglewood, CA, in the city's 114-year history, just ahead of Super Bowl Sunday. The "Queen of Inglewood" was honored during the city's Taste of Inglewood festival and delivered a touching speech to express her gratitude.
"I'm a little emotional; I'm trying to be a thug right now," she started. "The mayor really flabbergasted me in that this is the first key in 114 years. It's a huge honor, and I just want to thank you all so much for your support. Thank you to the mayor; thank you to the city of Inglewood for making it so easy for us to film here, for helping us to showcase this city that I love so much . . . I'm truly honored to receive this.

It's almost time to say goodbye to Insecure, and we're not ready! On Aug. 23, HBO announced that the fifth and final season of Issa Rae's fan-favorite comedy will be premiering in October, and on Sept. 2, the network dropped the first teaser ahead of the show's Oct. 24 premiere. In the short clip, we see Issa Dee (Rae) reflect on her life and admit to being terrified of the future. Back in November, Rae told Popsugar that season five will be all about "grounding and rooting oneself."
Filming for the final season officially wrapped in June, and some of the set photos offer a glimpse of what's in store for the characters, including a potential reunion between Issa and Nathan. Guess we'll just have to wait until October to see what actually goes down, but in the meantime, you can watch Rae's latest project, Sweet Life: Los Angeles,...

The world of Black reality television is slowly evolving, thanks to people like Issa Rae, who called it from the beginning. Perhaps the only woman to have cracked the code and raised the bar tremendously is Mona Scott Young of the Love & HipHop franchise. The story of Mona Scott Young’s domination of this area of television begins with that of rapper Jim Jones and dates all the way back to 2006. Jones was to shoot a reality show dubbed Keeping Up with the Joneses, alongside his long-term girlfriend Chrissy Lampkin. Soon enough, Jones’ then-manager Yandy Smith presented the idea

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

Issa Rae is best known for creating and starring in “Insecure,” the Emmy-winning show praised for its realistic portrayals of Black women coming-of-age in LA. And with the new reality show, “Sweet Life: Los Angeles,” she’s trying her hand at capturing the experience for “real.”
Produced under Rae’s Hoorae content banner, the HBO Max reality series follows seven twenty-somethings living in South LA and all of the ups and downs of their relationships and careers. In honor of the launch, Rae flew from Miami, where she’s in production on her next series “Rap Sh*t,” to Hollywood’s NeueHouse to introduce a special screening of the show’s first two episodes on Wednesday night.
“I’m so excited to present what is now my favorite show to you,” Rae told the crowd — including her “Insecure” co-star Yvonne Orji — that gathered for the rooftop premiere.

After creating, starring in, and producing some of our favorite comedies, Issa Rae is stepping into the realm of reality TV with her latest project, Sweet Life: Los Angeles. The HBO Max series centers on a group of Black friends as they navigate love, life, and careers in their mid-20s. Seeing as the series is unscripted, Rae didn't pen any scripts like she has for Insecure, but she did play a major role in filming.
The show is produced by Rae in congruence with her production company, Hoorae Media, which was founded in September 2020. "We're so proud to present a grounded and fun slice of young Black LA life," Rae previously said in a statement to Deadline about the show. "We hope the HBO Max audience will relate to and fall in love with this group of friends as much as we have."
