Hurry Up and Wait
Prismark1020 July 2021
I was surprised Jeff Pope did not get a co writing credit for this one.

James is a bit part actor who is waiting to get on the set of the latest true crime drama written by Jeff Pope for ITV.

However he ends up in a trailer of a real life family who seems to know rather a lot more about the disappearance of baby Ryan.

Adrian Dunbar guest stars as himself, an actor who knows just when to steal someone else's line.

The episode gets right just what it is to be a supporting artist. The early starts, the waiting around, playing second fiddle to the main actors. The production assistant who thinks that you are invisible and disposable.

It is a case of whether the family were involved in the kidnapping of baby Ryan. I am not sure I bought the twist although someone else I talked to rather liked the macabre ending.

Hmmmm...

Warning: Spoilers
Thought this was a good episode, very funny and dark at the same time, but I wasn't too keen on the ending. It raised too many questions for me. Like, did the parents know? And if they didn't, what about the smell? I know the actor who screws over Reece mentions it stinks in there but a rotting body would be unbearable, plus attract flys, maggots, animals and stuff.

I'm still yet to listen to "Inside inside no 9" though so it may yet be explained.

Fingaz MC.

Episode 604

Very old-school feel to the show with the blend of comedy and an intriguing situation.

Not perfect though, and I thought the twist at the end was a little lame.

Worth waiting for?

Warning: Spoilers
Standard brilliance, rather than exceptional brilliance again for this week's "Inside No. 9". A grim story with a bleak twist, cleverly hidden behind a more obvious one.

James (Reece Shearsmith) arrives to film his small role in a dramatic recreation of a real-life child abduction. Excited about his scene alongside Adrian Dunbar, he is asked to sit in the living room of a local family, who are being paid to operate the "green room" facility on the shoot. Quietly trying to learn his lines, he's forced into interacting with the homeowners, Oona (Pauline McLynn), Stan (Steve Pemberton) and their daughter Beverley (Donna Preston). Chatting about the shooting and the initial crime, he soon comes to wonder if they know more about the abduction than they are letting on.

Again, in a show that's never done a bad episode, this standard addition casts a little bit less of a shadow, compared to the real high spots the series has managed. It was perhaps a little lacking in laughs comparatively. James is a nervous character, easily intimidated by Stan and later by Adrian Dunbar, who convinces him that his lines should be moved over to him, in what is one of the more unfortunately obvious places the show has gone. I'm one of the few people in the country who hasn't watched "Line of Duty" so, much of that aspect of the episode didn't do much for me.

Donna Preston though was excellent, and she had most of what laughs there were as Beverley, the infantilised adult daughter of the family. She was very game for the stories reveals and it's another episode where a second viewing would reveal more dialogue and moments linked to the actual twist, and not the one that James, and the audience, are initially led towards.

So again, excellent - never not, but by their own high standards, probably the least effective of this sixth season so far.

Inside no. Line, class.

Loved it, the first few minutes had me wondering what on Earth was going on, and the direction it was going to take, but they nailed this one. As it develops it just becomes the most amazing mystery.

Everyone does a great job, but as soon as Adrian Dunbar appears, I was captivated, his selection from this following in from the recent success of Line of Duty was genius, the guys are blessed with knowing just what to present us with at the right time.

This one really does mess with you, it's twisted and strange, but I think there's a streak of genius running through this.

I loved it, I think this is a real grower, awesome story, made all the better by the brilliance of Adrian Dunbar.

Wow, 9/10.

Tales of the unexpected

Warning: Spoilers
I'm finally catching up with season 6 episodes which I recorded 18 months ago and yep, time flies. But with 2022 coming to a close it's time to catch up, and the first three episodes stand out.

But this one, Hurry Up and Wait, well the satirical edge of Adrian Dunbar playing a parodied version of Adrian Dunbdar was cutting edge and was pure class. I'm hoping a future episode of Inside No. 9 will have Danny Dyer play a parodied version of himself.

The ending was bitter tasting, and kind of bordered into Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected for sure. In a way I was hoping the ending would be like big reveal in The Truman Show.

One of the most twisted things I've ever seen...
danielbellamy-5805931 May 2021
This is an episode that'll keep you guessing. At first I thought I was clever and had guessed the twist from the off. Boy was I wrong. A terrific turn from Father Ted's Pauline McLynn and a dash of humour added by Line of Duty's Adrian Dunbar. It may go too far for some, but I thought this was one of Pemberton and Shearsmith's finest scripts to date.

Reece was amazing as usual. Really liked Steve's Character and the backstory about his family. The twist was good. Adrian Dunbar plays Adrian Dunbar brilliantly 😂

Not as good as last week, better than the first two
garybulmer-3292531 May 2021
Which is to say a lo as "Simon says" was very good. Although they completely underused Adrian Dunbar and the twist could've been seeded a LOT better. I still laughed out loud multiple times, felt uneasy and had a hell of a time. So, yeah. All around really good episode. A few elements need work but thoroughly enjoyable. Can't wait for next week!...

Enjoyed it but it's one of the weaker episodes.
everetta-832438 June 2021
I like pretty much every episode of this show so I didn't entirely dislike this one. However I'd probably rank it in the bottom 5 or so of all the episodes. The twist was weak and it wasn't overly funny either.

Lots of build for not much payoff
markcoyle1 June 2021
An okay episode with a great performance by Steve Pemberton. Overall though far less than the sum of its parts. The build up is good but the twist felt a bit forced, prompting a shrug as it had little setup. Adrian Dunbar's inclusion was fun but ultimately unnecessary to the story.

I was also uncomfortable in the treatment of mental illness and the child's disappearance in this episode too. These aspects merit some care but the treatment lacked compassion, the people in the episode lacking context and were just plot devices. It left a lingering sour taste especially with the contrasting humour alongside it.

The ending too if you consider it works in the moment but does not make sense after that.

Sour ending
daisyisabaker10 June 2021
Derogatory towards mental health issues.

Awkward plugging of Line Of Duty.

Rude and unrelatable characters.

Very weak ending.

This episode will definitely age badly.
