Season Three Review
Season three of "Master of None" was on the Guardian's top TV of 2021 list. Having rewatched, and enjoyed the previous two seasons, this third is an unusual addition, referred to as "Moments in love" it's an art house movie, spread over five episodes and is tonally very different to what has come before.
Now a successful author, Denise (Lena Waithe) has moved upstate with her wife, Alicia (Naomi Ackie). Though the couple are happy, particularly in comparison with Dev (Aziz Ansari) and his girlfriend, Reshmi (Aysha Kala), they have differing views of becoming parents, and are driven further apart as they struggle to conceive. The show re-joins the couple a various point in their lives, as the ramifications of their decisions are felt.
So, it's pretty clear that anyone expecting anything like what we've seen before is in for a rude awakening. The previous two seasons were a fairly broad comedy and even that episode in the second season, which focused on Denise, was much funnier than this is. The thing to accept is that this season isn't an unsuccessful comedy, it's not a comedy at all. It's a slow contemplative romantic drama, shot in an art house style, with pondering shots of the characters stood around. From a marketing standpoint, they could perhaps have done more to differentiate this season from the others as the "Moments in Love" imprint concept seems to have been lost on most people reviewing here.
However, I don't particularly like slow, art house, romantic dramas either. So, I can't come here an say that I enjoyed what this was. I think the performers are good, Naomi Ackie, in particular is excellent and episode four, in which she undergoes IVF treatment, was a masterclass from her. I liked how it was shot - though it's shot in England right? I've never seen anyone make America look that English if not.
It's not the disaster that people with the wrong expectations have declared it but what it is, is not too my taste either.
