- Kate and Jeannette's worlds collide as the court date arrives, finally forcing the two young women to answer the question on everyone's mind, but the answer comes with a price that not everyone can pay.
- The defamation trial against Kate finally begins. Jeanette's lawyers blindside Kate on the stand with the chat transcripts which indicate that she lied about aspects of her time with Martin. Afterwards, Kate is upset. She thought she was talking to another trauma survivor but was actually chatting with her step sister. This, combined with her still repressed memories of the mysterious "Anabelle" she had mentioned in therapy cause her to question her own memories. She decides to finally return to Martin's house to confront her past.
Kate goes to Martin's house, where she is joined by Jeanette, who has accepted Kate's invitation to hash things out. Jeanette reiterates that she never saw Kate and says that she doesn't really want the money that she is seeking in the lawsuit, but instead wants her reputation back. They run through what happened together. Kate remembers Jeanette breaking in on Christmas Eve. Kate heard a noise and hid. Jeanette stole the snow globe but got spooked when she heard a noise and fled. Kate went downstairs and peeks out the window. She says she saw Jeanette looking at her. Jeanette admit that she broke into the house and stole the snow globe, but denies that she saw Kate. Kate admits that she didn't "make eye contact" with Jeanette, like she had claimed, but she knows that it was her. The figure Kate saw was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, but she was riding a distinctive bicycle which Kate had seen Jeanette riding earlier in the summer.
Jeanette realizes what happened. When Kate had seen her and her friends earlier that year, Jeanette had actually ridden off on Mallory's bike. Jeanette says that Mallory was there that night. Mallory had seen Jeanette break into Martin's house and confronted her later, angry about her doing something so illegal when she had ended their friendship over Mallory's rule breaking behavior. Jeanette says that the figure Kate saw must have been Mallory, and that she can prove it because she gave Mallory the snow globe she stole from Martin's house. A shocked Kate realizes that her hatred of Kate, and the damage she's done to her reputation, were based on a mistake. The time in the house also jogs Kate's memory about Annabelle. She tells Jeanette that the day before she was rescued, Martin came downstairs with a mysterious box. He told her that the police had come by to speak with him and that it would only be a matter of time before they got search warrant. He opens the box and introduces "Annabelle" an old gun which he describes as a "family heirloom". He says that the gun took his father's life and Kate asks if he intends to do the same with her. Martin puts the gun to his own head, intending to commit suicide, but can't bring himself to do it. When he drops the gun, Kate picks it up and shoots Martin dead. She tells Jeanette that she spent all night beside Martin's body and then called the police the next morning.
Kate calls a press conference where she confesses that the accusations she made against Jeanette were the result of a terrible misunderstanding and that Jeanette is innocent. With her reputation restored, Jeanette drops the suit. Kate goes to confront a remorseful Mallory. Mallory explains that on that she did see Kate that night, but all she could see from that distance was a blonde woman. She figured that Martin had a girlfriend staying over or something. When Kate was rescued, and it was learned that Martin had abducted her, Mallory finally realized what she had seen. But she didn't know how to bring up the subject with anyone. The person she saw didn't seem to be a prisoner, and she didn't know how that would go over with anyone. Mallory, ashamed of not telling the truth to Kate says that she'll leave town. But Kate doesn't want Mallory to leave. She forgives her. Kate and Mallory go for a drive and dance joyfully in the street. Kate kisses Mallory. Later the two of them watch Jeanette appearing on the Marsha Bailey show. Mallory still dislike's Jeanette. On TV, Jeanette recounts her good fortune at having a loving family and boyfriend. She publicly forgives Kate.
There is a final flashback to 1994. Jeanette breaks into Martin's house again. As she walks through the house, she hears a faint voice. Kate is calling out from the basement. At first Kate thinks Martin has come home. Then she thinks maybe it's someone else. She calls out for help, identifying herself as Kate Wallis and saying that she's been kidnapped. Jeanette silently follows the voice to the basement door and reaches out for the doorknob. Then she pulls her hand back, and smiles wickedly.
