A Family Day Out With Gary Glitter . The Punchlines Write Themselves
What can one say about the 1970s legend that is Gary Glitter ? Plenty and none of them are complimentary . Glitter was held as an icon of camp nostalgia until he plead guilty to downloading child porn in the late 1990s . After appearing at a self pitying public news conference on his release from jail pleading that he deeply regretted doing what he was convicted of he disappeared from the public gaze only to hit the headlines again a few years later when he was sentenced to three years in jail for molesting children in Vietnam . He is effectively the world's most infamous paedophile
Knowing what we know about Glitter in 2011 watching this documentary of Glitter combining his turgid one note gigs with Gerry Cottle's circus has a morbidly blackly humorous quality to it . It's car crash TV . It's directed in a fly on the wall style with sound bites that with hindsight shouldn't have been uttered Child acrobats tell of how they have to rehearse their act to a Gary Glitter soundtrack : " We're all getting very scared , it's very difficult with Gary Glitter's music because it's very loud and we have to watch him " followed seconds later by the children bursting in to tears as they can't get their routine right . Gary Glitter has that effect on both music lovers and children . In fact he's always had that effect on music lovers
Opening night starts and audience members are interviewed saying things that many years later they perhaps wished they hadn't said @ " I reckon it'll be a good show for the family to see " and " something very entertaining for all the family . The children are looking forward to seeing all the animals " And the show starts with GG belting out " Do you wanna touch me ? " only with steel toe cap boots Gary. He follows this up with " What Ya Mamma Don't See Ya Mamma Don't Know " which is an actual song that sends a chill through the spine . He belts out another couple of songs which sound exactly like his other hit and swings around on a harness ( No doubt a safety precaution . There's children in the audience ) and his fans both go home happy along with the inappropriate line of one audience member who proclaims " I love Gary Glitter and so did my little boy . He was dancing in the aisles " Cut to the next day and tumbleweeds blow through the booking office with the circus owners weeping that they're losing two grand a day . Glitter walks along the sea front pondering his next move . Perhaps a cover version of The Dead Kennedy's Holiday In Cambodia ? This is an unintentionally funny documentary from a series that wouldn't have been remembered if
1) The subject matter wasn't Gary Glitter in which case...
2 )The punchlines write themselves when 30 years ago they wouldn't have been punchlines
