The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.

Portman said, “Benjamin choreographed the film, and also you might remember him in the movie as the guy when they ask, ‘Would you sleep with that girl?’ And he’s like, ‘Pffsh, no.’ He’s the best actor. It’s not true: He totally wants to sleep with me!
The Oscar-winning actress filed for divorce from her director-choreographer husband of 11 years last July and the divorce was finalized in France last month, according to People, which first reported on the pair’s split.
The two met on the set of the 2010 film Black Swan, which earned Portman an Oscar for best actress. Perhaps the biggest reason why the ghost story has enjoyed such popularity and power for so long is because it lies at the crux of some of humanity's most fundamental mysteries. For one thing, it addresses the question of life after death in a way that doesn't require belief in pearly gates or eternal hellfire, as it presupposes the existence of the soul. After all, if a person's energy can change the mood of a room, can't that same energy exist independently of a body and remain noticeable? Additionally, the total unknowability of ghosts is at once a source of fear and melancholy: if such entities exist, we can't know for sure what their intentions are, and if we might be facing such a fate, wouldn't such constraints as having no body and no voice be remarkably frustrating and lonely?
Steven Soderbergh's latest feature, "Presence," addresses these concepts in a remarkably effective fashion.

In 1947 director Robert Montgomery tried something radical. In adapting Raymond Chandler’s “Lady in the Lake” the director attempted to mirror the first-person narrative style of the book with his camera. The viewer would see the movie exclusively through the eyes of detective Philip Marlowe, while never seeing the detective himself (played by Montgomery) except in shots where he sees his reflection in the mirror.
Both the MGM-released film and the formal experiment were failures. Pure first-person filmmaking had the opposite effect of what was intended, the formal experiment only distanced the viewer. Almost 80 years later conventional filmmaking wisdom remains that to effectively employ point-of-view shots they need to be bracketed by shots of the character — character looks, cut to see what they see, cut back to the character’s reaction to what they saw — to shape what the audience was looking at, and to draw them into the story.

An experiment in shooting a movie entirely from a first-person Pov, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence has conceptual precedents but no meaningful ones in terms of the camera’s weight and the operator’s resulting physical relationship to it. 1947’s Lady in the Lake tried nonstop subjectivity with a bulky 35mm camera; 2009’s Enter the Void eliminated the embodied camera in its second half of weightless drifting. More recently there’s Hardcore Henry, which strapped GoPros to its protagonist’s head for a bouncy embodiment of a stuntman’s hardest workday. Netflix has shared the official trailer for the upcoming movie, May December. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film stars Natalie Portman as an actress who gets entwined in the tense, twisted world of the real-life subject she’s preparing to portray. Watch the trailer ahead of its December 1st premiere below.
Loosely based on the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau — the convicted child rapist who went on to marry and birth two children with her victim — May December follows Portman’s character as she prepares to play a woman (Julianne Moore) who began an affair with a 7th grader, and then eventually married him. Years removed from when their controversial “romance” caused a stir in the headlines, the couple welcomes Portman into their home, hoping to help her “tell the story right” for a movie about the affair.

Fifth Season, the company formerly known as Endeavor Content, is cutting around 12% of its workforce as a result of the impact of the dual Hollywood strikes.
The company, which is behind series such as Severance and Normal People, is axing 30 positions, across both executive and administrative roles.
It is the second time this year that the business, which is now majority owned by Korean studio Cj Enm, which paid $785M for an 80% stake, has had to make cuts following layoffs in April.
The company is run by Graham Taylor and Chris Rice, who are Co-CEOs. Joe Hipps runs the TV side of the business as EVP, TV Development and Production and Alexis Garcia runs the film group.
On the TV side, it is also behind See, Killing Eve, The Night Manager, Tokyo Vice, and upcoming projects such as Alma Har’el’s Lady in the Lake starring Natalie Portman for Apple.

UCP has optioned Laura Lippman’s new upcoming novel “Prom Mom,” Variety has learned exclusively.
“It’s exciting to know that readers already are responding so enthusiastically to ‘Prom Mom,’ which was partly inspired by and very much formed by the strange, dark early days of the pandemic,” said Lippman. “I’ve always been fascinated by — and terrified of — people who believe absolutely in their own goodness, and ‘Prom Mom’ gave me a chance to explore just how far such people might go in pursuit of their own happiness, no matter the cost to others.”
The news comes one day ahead of the novel’s release on July 25. No network or streamer is currently attached, nor is there currently a writer set to adapt the book due to the ongoing writers’ strike.
The official synopsis for the book states: “Amber Glass has spent her entire adult life putting as much...

David Corenswet has landed the part of Clark Kent in James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy, which is set to be released in theaters July 11, 2025.
On Tuesday, Gunn, the director and co-chairperson of DC Studios, announced that Corenswet will suit up to play the role of Superman or Man of Steel, along with Lois Lane, who will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s star, Rachel Brosnahan.
Fans noticed Corenswet’s similar appearance to Superman actor Henry Cavill long ago when he debuted on Netflix’s The Politician.
He tried to play it cool on the comparisons. “I am officially not taking a position,” he told EW in 2019. “I think that’s the way to go. But it has come to my attention. It actually came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me, and my sort of pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman.”

A new Man of Steel has arrived. After an extensive search for the actor to fill the role of Superman in writer/director James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot “Superman: Legacy,” 29-year-old American actor David Corenswet has won the coveted role. He’ll star alongside Emmy-winning “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” actress Rachel Brosnahan in the new Warner Bros. film, which is slated for release in 2025 and will officially kick off Gunn’s rebooted (and interconnected) DC universe.
Much like the actors who donned the tights before him, Corenswet isn’t a complete unknown but also isn’t (yet) an incredibly recognizable performer. Consider this your primer to get to know the new Man of Steel.

Both Corenswet and Brosnahan’s names have been at the top of the pile since May, while Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney were also vying for the cape and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor were up for The Daily Planet’s star reporter. Reports that Gunn and his co-dc Studios boss, Peter Safran, had screen-tested all six actors earlier this month signaled that a final decision was near.

James Gunn has found his Superman and Lois Lane.
After a lengthy search, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will star in Superman: Legacy, the film that will launch DC’s new universe under writer-director Gunn and his DC Studios co-boss, Peter Safran.
Corenswet and Brosnahan were among six actors who vied for the lead roles, with Gunn filming screen tests over the June 17 weekend with Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney also in contention to play Superman/Clark Kent and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor in the running for Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.
Few roles are as coveted — or come with as much pressure — as Superman. That’s doubly true in the current landscape, as Corenswet will anchor a new universe as DC attempts to reinvent itself after a streak of misses with October’s Black Adam, March’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the recent The Flash. Only...

Sweet Magnolias is making a big change ahead of its return on Netflix.
Deadline broke the news this week that the role of Katie Townsend would be recast.
The publication revealed that Ella Grace Helton will take on the role for Sweet Magnolias Season 3 -- and beyond.
Helton takes over for departing star Bianca Berry Tarantino.
Scheduling conflicts triggered producers to make the move, with the departing star set to star opposite Natalie Portman on the Apple TV+ drama Lady in the Lake.
As previously reported, Netflix will welcome viewers back to Serenity on Thursday, July 20, with all ten episodes available on that date.
The streaming service has been switching things up recently, with several of its most popular series having their seasons divided into two parts.
You're probably breathing out a huge sigh of relief right about now.

Portman’s performance in the scene is striking not just for how uncomfortable it is, but because it’s an uncanny re-creation of a character that Julianne Moore has been playing for the entire movie up to that point. In the drama from director Todd Haynes, which will premiere in competition May 20 at Cannes, Portman is Elizabeth, an actress doing research to play Gracie (Moore), a woman at the center of a decades-old tabloid scandal, married to a man (Riverdale‘s Charles Melton) 23 years younger than she is. May December is an opportunity for the star of dark films like Black Swan and Léon: The Professional to dig into an old obsession.
