The Stylist.

After the excellent The Night and The Barcelona Vampiress (2020-both also reviewed) I decided to end the night of viewings,by watching the first of two shorts from the Grimm Film Festival.

View on the film:

Getting Paula tangled into the workings of the hair salon, co-writer/(with Christopher Palm) director Dominic Kubisch & cinematographer Maximilian Smoliner cut a sharp kooky retro atmosphere of slick chrome coloured panning shots over the 50's jukebox dropping a new track, as a hair-pulling murder takes place.

While featuring a hair-raising twist, the writers keep the explanation for it occurring annoyingly vague, which sadly undermines the ambiguous anxiety gripping Paula,as she makes the final cut.

Warning: Spoilers
It reminds me the short animation Alma by Rodrigo Blaas. Same basic ingredients - the mistery as a sort of gentle fog and the curiosity of young woman.

The basic virtue of film remains the 1950 decade atmosphere and sustained by the inspired white-black image.

A young woman and her answer to the hep wanted of a hairstylist. His amable first lessons of haircut A jukebox fascinating the young apprentice. Her first try to use it and the opposition of boss. The second try has a not so surprising result after the initial warning.

The photo presented in the final offers some clues for better understanding of story.

In short, just a correct crafted short film.
