We know that Warner Bros. is working on increasing its anime library, which is probably a move motivated by Netflix’s and Disney’s “attacks” on the anime market. And while Warner Bros. is slowly working towards its goal, we know that a major title is coming soon. Since Warner is the owner of the rights to DC’s series, they have decided to build on the success of the Batman-themed anime film, Batman Ninja, by creating an anime series based on DC’s characters. Suicide Squad Isekai will see the titular group of supervillains enter a “new world” to complete a mission and we have finally received a release window for the series, as well as a new character trailer.
The series was announced a while ago and will, according to Warner’s plans, be the first in a series of anime versions of DC’s stories. This won...

Action shonen anime dominates the medium, for better and worse. Every big franchise eventually gets an original movie — or a dozen. "One Piece" has 15, "Dragon Ball" 24, and "Naruto" has 11.
The problem is that these mostly tend to be non canonical movies without much consequence. They are cute, fun adventures, for sure. Still, they are more concerned with providing fan service than providing substance. The best ones are those that manage to make the most out of their non canonical status and present truly experimental movies, like the best of the "One Piece" films.
Now comes "Spy x Family: Code White," a movie based on one of the most popular manga, published in Shonen Jump magazine — which makes this technically a shonen anime movie, regardless of its actual genre. The premise is simple. Loid is a spy, Yor is an assassin, and together they fake a family for convenience (and for...

Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.

Alex Garland’s dystopian political action film Civil War about an America torn apart triumphed over new vampire pic Abigail at the weekend box office.
Civil War held in well to stay No. 1 in its second weekend with $11 million for a healthy domestic total of $45 million for indie studio A24. The film has succeeded in uniting both blue states and red states.
Heading into the weekend, Universal’s Abigail was expected to take a bigger bite out of Civil War but instead opened to $10.2 million. That’s still a respectable number for a studio film that cost a modest $28 million to make before marketing.
Horror often struggles overseas, where Abigail only took in $5 million from 62 markets for a global start of $15.2 million,
Abigail is from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known as Radio Silence who were behind the reboot of the Scream franchise and the horror hit Ready or Not.

A24’s dystopian thriller “Civil War” conquered the box office again, fending off three new releases to retain the top spot on North American charts.
Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist who traverses a violently divided United States, added $11.12 million in its second weekend of release. It has generated $44.8 million so far and already stands as one of A24’s top five highest-grossing movies of all time. With a $50 million price tag, it’s also the indie distributor’s most expensive film to date.
Though it was a close race, “Civil War” charged ahead of a trio of newcomers — Universal’s vampire horror film “Abigail,” director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White” — which all opened to mixed results.
Heading into the weekend, “Abigail” was predicted to top the box office with $12 million to $15 million in its debut.

It’s a close contest at the domestic box office, with the opening day gross of Universal’s ballerina vampire film “Abigail” leading Lionsgate’s fellow new release “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and the second frame of A24’s dystopian thriller “Civil War.”
“Abigail” earned $4 million from 3,384 theaters across its opening day and preview screenings, making it the top performer of the weekend so far. But, after factoring out the $1 million that the horror film earned from screenings before Friday, it comes up behind A24’s “Civil War,” which was actually the top grosser for April 19, taking in roughly $3.3 million.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” fired off about $3.7 million from 2,845 locations — a figure that includes $1.45 million across earlier preview screenings. All three films are eyeing weekend grosses in the low-teens or high-single-digits.

“Spy x Family Code: White” is a fun, accessible jumping-on point for anyone unfamiliar with the “Spy x Family” anime, or the manga on which it’s based. However, in slowing down to let newcomers catch up, it tends to lack momentum. The plot isn’t strictly tied to the the comic or the show’s two seasons (it’s yet to be renewed for a third), but it picks up with the same basic premise: a found family with secret lives and abilities, which they keep guarded from one another, while a non-specific political conflict looms on the horizon.

From “Cooking Papa” and “Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma” to “Delicious in Dungeon” and every Ghibli film in between, anime has a rich history of wholesome food porn. Yet even so, it might still come as a surprise to some fans of “Spy x Family” that the show’s first theatrical outing would revolve so heavily around a cooking competition.

The April of genre showers continues with four new wide releases and another expanding nationwide, offering quite a bit of variety. Can any of the take down reigning champion “Civil War”? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
First up is the new horror film, “Abigail,” from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, who directed the last two “Scream” movies. This one involves a band of criminals who kidnap the young daughter of a powerful crime lord to get money from him, holding her in a mansion where they learn that … she’s a vampire! The filmmakers reunite with Melissa Barrera from their “Scream” films, who is joined by Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Giancarlo Esposito, Matthew Goode and the title character is played by young Alisha Weir.

Talk about nepotism. “Abigail,” a blood-sucking thriller about the daughter of Dracula, arguably the most famous vampire in history, is poised to lead at the domestic box office.
The R-rated movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming for $12 million to $15 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. But “Abigail” first has to fend off last weekend’s champion, A24’s “Civil War,” before taking the box office crown. The provocative thriller debuted last weekend with $25.8 million and looks to bring in $10 million to $12 million in its sophomore outing.
Based on projections, “Abigail” will, however, dance circles around two fellow newcomers, director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White.” Those films are targeting $5 million to $6 million, though rivals have pegged ticket sales ever-so-slightly higher at $8 million.

Not so long ago, our good friends at Polygon published a very detailed research-based piece about how anime is growing around the world and how the current kids, the Gen Z ones, actually love anime more than any other generation, thus confirming that anime is – indeed – one of the largest and fastest-growing fields in the world of entertainment, as witnessed by its growing popularity in the West.
More and more anime movies are being released in Western cinemas as well (which was not the case just 5-10 years ago), major streaming services are not just picking up anime series, but they are also producing their own anime series, and there is a growing trend of live-action adaptations of anime works. On top of that, anime culture is more present in the West.

With two seasons and the theatrical release of Spy x Family Code: White coming faster than Anya Forger’s dynamic Star Catch Arrow, there’s a lot of great Spy x Family anime content to be excited about. With that content comes some pretty memorable quotes that range from being emotionally impactful to flat-out hilarious. Heh . That said, how well do you know the lines said in Spy x Family ? There are so many directions that a Spy x Family could pursue. The ongoing anime has a deeply versatile story structure that allows it to indulge in diverse missions so that the series always feels fresh. Accordingly, it’s seriously surprising to see Code: White function as a covert cooking anime movie.
It’s the type of story that audiences would expect to see in a Food Wars! or Toriko feature film, but not Spy x Family. It’s also an ambitious approach to Spy x Family’s first movie that hedges its bets and is too cautious to disrupt the status quo. Code: White is still rich in classic Spy x Family elements, even if it amounts to an empty meal.
Loid Forger has previously thwarted international incidents, avoided assassination, and pulled off precision exchanges. Spy x Family has repeatedly proven that he’s an expert spy who can...

In Spy x Family Season 2 Loid, Yor and Anya embarked on a cruise together, marking the Forger family’s very first vacation. Spy x Family Code: White sees the Forgers taking another trip, and if it’s anything like the anime’s second season, there will be more to the train ride than seeing the sights. That said, Spy x Family is a series where the ordinary tasks hold just as much importance as the missions at hand, which begs the question... what would your role be in the Forger family trip? Related: Spy x Family Code: White Movie Tickets Now on Sale Sure, trying to stop bad guys is crucial to the operation, but so is planning the trip itself. Episodic storytelling is a lost art. That is, knowing how to craft a compelling standalone episode of television you can watch on its own and get a complete story out of while still dropping enough character work and lore to carry the story from one episode to the next (and even into future seasons).
Granted, there are still exceptions that carry on this tradition, like the excellent anime spy sitcom "Spy x Family." Now comes an anime that delivers on the procedural genre, with a mix of "House M.D." and "Sherlock Holmes" set in medieval China that is equal parts thrilling, mysterious, and fun.

Spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong" to follow.
The MonsterVerse movies not only have a consistent naming approach (which makes it easier to determine the order in which to watch them) but its titles are also inspired by those of the Toho "Godzilla" films. You have "King of the Monsters," which is the 1956 localized title of the original "Godzilla" film. You have a "vs." title inspired by many of the Showa era "Godzilla" movies with "Godzilla vs. Kong," and of course, the first movie is simply known as "Godzilla."
Then there's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," the new '80s buddy-cop-inspired MonsterVerse film. The "x" in the title is a weird choice, one that is open to various different interpretations. Warner Bros. Discovery is to significantly expand its investment and production of Japanese anime through its existing local studio in Japan.
“We have a Japanese anime studio, which has been producing five or ten anime series per year, over the last few years,” said James Gibbons, Wbd president of Asia-Pacific. “We’ve approved expansion to take that to more than ten series per year.”
The studio has been operational since 2011 and delivered over 80 titles in that span, a mix of high-quality anime, live action series and movies. Not all mangas are action and shounen. Here are some of the best Josei mangas ever made. (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Anime and manga are incredibly diverse when it comes to their genres. Most are mixed and matched to form the most fun amalgams of pure entertainment. There are, however, some distinctive genres that are uniquely Japanese and exclusive even within these mediums.
They are primarily defined and named after the demographic they target and are known as shojo, shounen, josei, and seinen. Most of us are familiar with Shojo and Shounen, considering their absolute domination in the current anime/manga scene. However, josei and seinen may be new terms for some of us.
Josei mangas are a genre of Japanese comic books tailored specifically for young adult women. They delve into themes and subjects that resonate with this demographic, often focusing on romance, melodrama, and even slice-of-life narratives centered around relatable female protagonists.

The good news is that the anime industry is about as diverse as it gets, offering various genres and sub-genres that cater to almost every age and group. It certainly doesn’t lack in the department of cute and slow anime, either. Here are the four cutest anime you’ll ever watch.
