ReFrame and IMDbPro have announced that 29 out of the 100 most popular films of 2023 have received the ReFrame “stamp” for gender-balanced productions. Some of these titles include “Barbie,” “Anyone But You,” “Flamin’ Hot,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Past Lives,” “Saltburn” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
The newly released report came with other key findings. 19 out of the top 100 films this past year were directed by women and one was directed by a non-binary person, an increase from 14 women directors in 2022. Of said films, nine were directed by women of color; only two were directed by women of color in 2022. Furthermore, 17 women were hired as visual effects supervisors, a significant increase from 8 in 2022. While seven films hired women cinematographers in 2022, there were only three in 2023, making director of photography the most male-occupied role. Following this, first assistant directors were 91% male and composers 90% male.

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards are in full swing, with striking “blue carpet” styles to match.
The annual awards ceremony took place Sunday, February 25 in Santa Monica, California, with the casts from “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages,” “Eileen,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” and more in attendance. The ceremony is hosted by “SNL” alum and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant, and was livestreamed on IMDb’s YouTube channel.
On the heels of the buzzy SAG Awards just the night before and even closer to the 2024 Oscars this time around due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, the Spirit Awards are the place to be seen on the indie film scene. Oscar-nominated films “American Fiction,” “May December,” and “Past Lives” lead the Spirit Award nominations with five nods each, including in the Best Feature category.
To note, the budget cap of $30 million productions made Oscar heavyweights “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,...

In a tantalising combination, Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment are reportedly negotiating for an Alejandro G. Iñárritu project with Tom Cruise in talks to star.
The untitled project would mark the first under Cruise’s non-exclusive pact with Warner Bros Discovery announced last month, and would be Mexican filmmaker Iñárritu’s first return to English-language filmmaking since Oscar-nominated The Revenant nearly a decade ago.
No details are available on the feature, which Iñárritu co-wrote with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone.
The latter two co-wrote 2015 best picture Oscar winner Birdman with Iñárritu, and Giacobone co-wrote 2022 comedy drama Bardo and...

As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

Many factors drive an Oscar nomination, but a film’s release strategy can make the crucial difference.
“Oppenheimer” (13 nominations) and “Barbie” (8 nominations) stand out as brilliantly handled releases. Shutouts like “Origin” (Neon), “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight), “Air” (Amazon), “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (Apple), and “Saltburn” (MGM) prove that no distributor is immune.
However, when it comes to the distributors with the best track record, there are two: Disney had 20 nominations across Searchlight (12), 20th Century Studios (2), and 1 each for National Geographic Documentary Films, Pixar, Searchlight/Hulu/Disney+, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney Branded Television and Disney+.
And then there’s Netflix, a behemoth that doesn’t do sub-brands. It had 18 nominations: 7 for “Maestro,” 2 each for “Nyad” and “Society of the Snow,” and 1 each for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “May December,” “American Symphony,” “The After,” “El Conde,” “Rustin,” and “Nimona.” Theatrical releases for all of these films were modest at best,...

The race to the 96th annual Academy Awards has picked up the momentum. On Tuesday, the nominations for the upcoming edition of the Oscars were announced. The biggest disappointment comes in the form of the Greta Gerwig directorial ‘Barbie’ as it failed to get nominated in the Best Director and Actress in a Leading Role category.
Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid were on hand to announce the nominees live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, reports ‘Variety’.
Acclaimed music composer John Williams, scored his 54th Oscar nomination for the Harrison Ford-starrer ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’. With this he has become the most nominated person in the Oscars.
Here are the nominations:
Actress in a Supporting Role
Emily Blunt for ‘Oppenheimer’; Danielle Brooks for ‘The Color Purple’; America Ferrera for ‘Barbie’; Jodie Foster for ‘Nyad’; and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for ‘The Holdovers’

Global streaming giant Netflix is gearing up to report its fourth-quarter and full-year 2023 earnings after the market close on Tuesday (Jan. 23), and its progress in building its advertising tier to scale and growth following a third-quarter gain of 9 million subscribers are among the topics in Wall Street’s focus.
Among the streamer’s big content launches of the final quarter of 2023 were the likes of Squid Game: The Challenge, new seasons of Lupin and Sex Education, the Money Heist spin-off Berlin, the conclusion of The Crown, awards season contenders, such as Bradley Cooper’s Maestro and Todd Haynes’ May December, Aardman Animation’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.

“Oppenheimer” already had a healthy lead going in this round of the 35 boxes’ theory but after the BAFTAs released their nomination, that lead has only increased.
This theory aims to track an Oscar contender’s popularity across the entire industry throughout awards season. Each of the 35 boxes represents a key nomination or win at various awards groups that a potential Best Picture champion typically needs to tick off on their way to the Academy Awards’ biggest prize. The more boxes you tick, the greater your support across the industry, and the better your chances of winning Best Picture at the Oscars. That’s the idea anyway.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Conversely, “Roma” filled in only 19 boxes while both “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite” were at 20. Each of the three previous Best Picture winners prior to “Green Book” numbered among...

The annual AFI Awards lunch at the Four Seasons was the same as it ever was: time, station, place in the awards calendar. This celebration of the top 10 jury-voted lists for film and television is always a big draw for talent and their studio chiefs: no one has to make a speech, and mingling freely are the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook, Disney’s Bob Iger, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros.’ David Zaslav, Universal’s Donna Langley, MGM/Amazon’s Jennifer Salke, and Sony’s Tom Rothman (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”).
During the annual benediction, Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn (“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”) said, “I’m very happy to be here, because of this idea of honoring 10 movies and 10 television shows, and just leaving it at that, not having five people nominated, invited to a big gala event, one person wins and four losers: I’ve been at...

Awards prognosticators are, for the most part not, the audience voting for the Oscars. But the consensus upon the announcement of the 2024 PGA Awards nominations is that the Producers Guild of America’s picks for the prestigious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures hit the nail on the head in terms of the direction the Best Picture race has been trending toward. In other words, it sure seemed like we just got an advance notice of the 10 films that will fill up nomination slots for the Academy’s highest honor come January 23.
For context, the PGA Awards are one of the most accurate bellwethers for Best Picture, with 15 of its last 20 guild winners (including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” last year) going on to win the Oscar. Other honors like the Critics Choice Awards and the AFI Awards have a similar reputation for accuracy, but...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Picture in the wake of Friday’s Producers Guild Awards nominations.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we waited for the Producers Guild Awards nominations to commence our weekly typing — perhaps expecting the industry’s producers to toss the Best Picture race into some disarray as Oscar voting ramps up. But how the taste jumped out. The 10 movies nominated for this year’s PGA Award exactly match the 10 movies we both expect to see nominated for Best Picture from A to Z — by which I mean, the list includes “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest.” This is presumably where films like “The Color Purple” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” should’ve gotten...

The SAG Awards nominations provided an exciting blend of usual suspects and stunning omissions. For some awards season strategists — particularly the ones behind critically adored films like “Anatomy of a Fall” and “May December” — there’s no choice but to ask, “what happened?”
The SAG Awards’ pearl anniversary brought expected mentions for Oscar contenders such as the two summer smash hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” leading the tally for all movies with four nominations each. In addition, the crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and the satirical dramedy “American Fiction” managed three mentions. The latter needed the boost, picking up vital mentions for Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown, which turbocharges their campaigns.
SAG wasn’t the only group to change the shape of the Oscar race, with the Directors Guild of America naming five directing nominees: Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers...

Where in the world is Leonardo DiCaprio?! And Mark Ruffalo?! And Jeremy Strong?! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss all the snubs and surprises from the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.
As usual, the SAG Awards threw in some SAGgy curveballs, the most notable one being a snub for DiCaprio. The “Killers of the Flower Moon” star is Mia in the lead actor lineup. Does this make him vulnerable at the Oscars? The supporting categories had all sorts of chaos. “American Fiction” got a big boost with a nom for Sterling K. Brown in supporting actor. “Poor Things” also made the category — but not for the person most people expected as Mark Ruffalo was left out in favor of Willem Dafoe. Can they both get in at the Oscars? Penelope Cruz crashed the supporting actress for “Ferrari” over expected nominee Julianne Moore,...

Todd Haynes' "May December" is a tricky, difficult drama that tells a fictionalized version of the Mary Kay LeTourneau story. Some may recall that LeTourneau, a sixth-grade teacher, was arrested in 1997 for having targeted and statutorily assaulted 12-year-old Vili Fualaau. LeTourneau had two children with Lualaau, and when she was released from prison, the two married. They remained married for 14 years. In "May December," the LeTourneau-inspired character was renamed Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianna Moore), and her much younger husband, 34 at the time of the movie, was renamed Joe Yoo (Charles Melton).
Haynes' film follows a famous actor named Elizabeth Barry (Natalie Portman), who has taken a job playing Gracie in an upcoming drama. Elizabeth spends several weeks observing Gracie, imitating her mannerisms, and interviewing the people in her life. Why, Elizabeth wonders, did Gracie commit her terrible crime? How does Joe feel about it so many years later, still married to his victimizer?...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
The world came back in 2023. The box office, the labor strikes, the raging wars, the Who-declared end of official global emergency, the AI explosion. People were stir-crazy, anxious to act, be it in the name of violence or peace or productivity. It’s been a sobering reminder that life fully lived is defined by bedrock tragedy as much as triumph––that to enter back into open community with the rest of the world is to feel the effervescence of life flowing naturally again while simultaneously laying oneself bare to fresh devastation. It’s been a reminder of the duality of being: that real life is much wilder than the movies and yet the day-to-day is still defined by mundanity and monotony––the amassed in-between moments.

The 2023 Netflix film “May December” is fictional, but draws heavily on the real-life story of teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her notorious affair with her sixth-grade student Vili Fualaau. According to Fualaau, the filmmakers behind the production never reached out to him during its production, he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If they had reached out to me, we could have worked together on a masterpiece,” Fualaau said. “Instead, they chose to do a ripoff of my original story.”
While not claiming to be a true story, the film draws heavily on the Letourneau case and the screenwriter has noted that story served as her inspiration. Dialogue in one of the film’s pivotal scenes was pulled directly from a televised interview with Letourneau and Fualaau.

Will the Golden Globes think pink? “Barbie,” which leads with nine nominations, is expected to win four awards on Sunday: Best Comedy/Musical Film, Best Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Best Original Song (where it has three nominations) for Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For?” and the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. Its Barbenheimer other half ,”Oppenheimer,” is also predicted to win four prizes, which would make the duo just the seventh and eighth films to win exactly four awards in one night, not to mention on the same night. With the genre split, “Barbie,” at the very least, is shaping up to be the most awarded comedy of the night. But is it in tighter races than one might think?

Netflix’s “Maestro” is out on the streaming service this Christmas and the period film will surely delight film lovers and movie fans alike. Bradley Cooper‘s Leonard Bernstein film isn’t an ordinary biopic as it dispenses the tired cradle-to-grave true story trope to focus entirely on Bernstein’s marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The film spans decades including the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and each part of the film is made in the style of filmmaking used in said period. This makes for a wonderfully visual spectacle with the sets, costumes, and hair and makeup all some of the best work in each area of filmmaking. Add to that excellent acting from Cooper and Mulligan as well as top-tier directing, cinematography, and editing and you’ve got an Oscars hopeful that could reap bids in multiple categories. Let’s break it down.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Notes on a Scandal,” “Last Summer,” and “May December.“]
“May December” has been called a dark comedy and a campy take on “Persona” (though director Todd Haynes disdains the “camp” label). It inspired an unexpected Netflix meme-based social media push capitalizing on the shirtless scenes of supporting star Charles Melton, and now this tale of abuse has been nominated for, of all things, a comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. (Netflix submitted the film as such.)
It seems that “May December” has led to every conversation but what it’s actually about: grooming.
The film tracks the fallout of Gracie, an adult woman (Julianne Moore) who seduced a 12-year-old boy (played as an adult by Charles Melton), had his children, went to jail for her misdeeds, and — eventually — married her victim. Natalie Portman portrays Elizabeth, an actress playing Gracie in a big-screen adaptation of her life.

Awards Season Barbie is already proving to be a dominant force in the market.
Who could have imagined it was possible that a movie about a Mattel doll come to life would become not only the box office juggernaut of 2024 but also a growing awards magnet? We live in unpredictable times indeed, boys and girls. But now that “Barbie” has hauled in more than $1.4 billion worldwide and topped both the Golden Globes movie nominations with nine and now the Critics Choice Movie Awards (announced Wednesday morning) with a record-breaking 18, the film is more than just trending – it’s overachieving on a grand scale.
Or maybe we should call it just plain old achieving.
SEECritics Choice Movie Awards: ‘Barbie’ sets record with whopping 18 nominations
Should we have seen this coming? Maybe. Greta Gerwig’s comedic masterpiece is perhaps the one movie of 2023 that everyone is united on in love and admiration.

AARP says that a “May-December romance” is “an age-old term for an amorous relationship between two people with a considerable age difference. The months symbolize the seasons, with spring representing youth and winter representing old age.

The State of the Race
It has long been perceived that the Best Supporting Actor race this season has four locks for a nomination, but as the first round of film awards winners have been announced, the last name to join veterans Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”) may just have a fighting chance of winning the Oscar.

The Golden Globe Awards are never accused of lacking in star power, and nominations for the 2024 edition are no exception. Voters tend to love both the newest shiny object and the shiniest. Barbenheimer dominated the 81st Golden Globe Awards nominations on Monday, but where in the world was “The Color Purple”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the film nominations, what they mean for the Oscars and more.
“Barbie” led the way with nine nominations, including Best Comedy/Musical Film, Best Director for Greta Gerwig and triple Best Original Song bids (it can only get two song noms at the Oscars). Just like at the box office, “Oppenheimer” was on its pink heels with eight nominations, including Best Drama Film and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. Both films are also up for the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, where Taylor Swift is also nominated for “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” It feels like Barbenheimer could split the top prizes, but which films could pull an upset? Other films that performed well: “Killers of the Flower Moon...

The Oscar race is coming into focus with the Golden Globes nominations.
Four clear candidates have emerged in the race for best picture – Apple Original “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” from drama and “Barbie” and “Poor Things” from comedy. Those four movies also received the most nominations of the day.
Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie,” which tied “Cabaret” (1972) for the second-most noms in Globes history with nine, is showing it’s not only the highest-grossing movie of the year, it’s also viable to take home the Academy’s most coveted prize, despite being an unconventional candidate. It’s noteworthy that the three song noms for “Barbie” – “Dance the Night,” “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” – can’t repeat at the Oscars since there’s a cap of two songs nominated from a single movie. The Warner Bros. blockbuster also had a notable nominations miss,...

Remember: it’s no longer the Hollywood Foreign Press. Much of that idiosyncratic group of 90 mostly white Hollywood correspondents is buried inside a new diverse list of 300 voters from 75 countries, 60 percent people of color. And most of them, unlike the core of international entertainment reporters based in Hollywood, are bonafide film critics.
Now, while the press conferences dreaded by talent are no more, Globe members in New York, L.A., and London are happily getting invites to FYC events again.
And thus the old awards ecosystem, with the writers and actors strikes resolved, is up and running. No question, studios and streamers campaigning for Oscars consider the Globes an essential cog in the machine. Get in the race, and you can campaign. Win, and your speech can go viral.
Thing is, the HFPA used to veer from calling the Oscars correctly — when Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water...

For decades, “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) shared the Golden Globes record for the most nominations ever received by a TV program in a single year at eight. Now that record has been shattered by “Succession,” which just earned a whopping nine bids on Monday, December 11 (see the complete list of noms). HBO’s family drama is honored for its fourth and final season, which wrapped up this spring to universal acclaim from critics and fans.
Golden Globes history was made when “Succession” netted these nine nominations: drama series, drama actress (Sarah Snook), drama actor x3, supporting actress (J. Smith-Cameron) and supporting actor x3.

Todd Haynes has come a long way since self-distributing his unauthorized cult classic “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” in 1988, but he’s still grateful for the people who helped him turn the short film into the foundation for one of the most celebrated careers in independent filmmaking.
Haynes, whose Cannes hit “May December” is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2023, was honored with the Vanguard Award at the 2023 IndieWire Honors. When Haynes took the stage to accept the award at NeueHouse Hollywood on Wednesday, December 6, he reflected on the initial boost that he received from influential New York film critics and the ways that critics continue to shape his career.
Haynes recalled his attempts to screen “Superstar,” which used Barbie dolls as puppets to tell a satirically biographical story about pop music legend Karen Carpenter, in New York after graduating film school. He credited critics with responding to his...
