Slow start, let's hope it picks up the pace
Sir Gerry23 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Filoni pays a lot of tribute to George Lucas on the first episode of Ahsoka, written and directed by Lucas' padawan, there is no shortage of Lucas' Star Wars references, like the opening crawl, the long spaceship shot, the probe droid and the bad dialogue.

In this first episode we jump right into action because we all know who Ahsoka is, and who her friends are too, that's a good thing. Hinting at Thrawn's (and Ezra's) survival, Ahsoka is tasked with, guess what?!:

Finding a celestial map, left behind by a person who doesn't want to be found, so he can be found. Sounds familiar? I bet that's Kathy's hand, again.

Taking place a few years after the events of Episode VI, the ships, aliens and technology is as OT Star Wars as you're going to get. Nice sets, VFX and music (which is very similar to the OT soundtrack).

Acting is ok, I've always liked Dawson, and her animated counterparts come to life quite nicely, maybe except for Sabine, who has a pedantic, mean girl attitude, "because she is a Mandalorian".

Clocking at 52 minutes, this episode is nothing to write home about, but let's hope sets up the story for what is to come, we all know we are going to see some form of Vader, and I'm pretty sure Luke will be in it, too.

Entertaining start that sets the scene well
snoozejonc23 August 2023
Ahsoka obtains a valuable object sought by others.

This episode introduces the characters and kicks off the story competently, with a simple MacGuffin plot and a few exposition dumps that tell you all you need to know.

I have not seen 'Rebels', and only know the character Ahsoka from 'The Mandalorian' episode 'The Jedi', (which I enjoyed). For this to work I need to accept her as Anakin's apprentice, which is a fairly shaky premise for me, but I am willing to keep an open mind to what the writers do with her throughout this show. Particularly in any flashbacks we might see.

Some characters feel like stock young protagonists and antagonists aimed at younger audiences, but time will tell whether or not they can become interesting.

All the actors appear to be solid, but there is nothing particularly challenging other than physical scenes and brooding so far.

Visually I think it's excellent, with strong cinematography and editing that tells the story well. Plus the art design is great as you would expect from this type of production. The action sequences are very well done.

Great start but a bit choppy
namob-4367323 August 2023
The show starts very strong with good performances. Things are set up pretty nicely and even people who's never seen Rebels or any Star Wars can pretty easily follow and understand what is going on.

A lot of callbacks and nostalgia for people who love the Rebels tv show, and this feels very much like it is actually Star Wars. Music is used in a great way, sets, costumes etc. Have a good realistic feel. Story also seem to hold very nice narrative ways and set up the future episodes in a perfect way.

Where this first episode fails is first of all the choppy editing where we jump from scene to scene, from planet to planet, from set to set over and over again that it borders on confusing. The show cannot sit still for more than a few seconds and its not until about 30min in we get to breath in a environment which stay with us. The second issue I have with this first episode is that Map thing - why would some ancient witches long ago dead have a orb (map) of where Thrawn is? That made no sense whatsoever. And finally the performances are not 100%. No one is really bad, and all can act, it is just that many of them are not great at it.

Still a great start of the show. 8/10 and hope they can keep it up and fix the tiny misses I mention above.

Pacing oddly slow, but excited to see more!
LorenBieg23 August 2023
I watched the entire Star Wars: Rebels series in preparation for episode one, finishing season four the day of the premier. It's great fun seeing the Easter eggs and how the story seems ready to pay off the last episode of Rebels right from the start.

The Star Wars audience is always in good hands with Dave Filoni. But something about the direction or editing here seems strangely low-energy and slow. Perhaps I'm just over-used to the kinetic energy of th animated series. But it seems like there is a lot of staring and pausing and walking, etc. The characters earned a strong connection to each other I don't feel here yet. Otherwise visually beautiful and a great start to a series focused on one of Star Wars' most interesting characters. Can't wait to see how they bring back Ezra!

First episode shows promise!
and_mikkelsen23 August 2023
She is back!! As a great fan of Ahsoka, as well as The Clone Wars and Rebels, i was both excited and worried, given Disney's track record with their shows! However this show looks promosing so far!

The episode does a great job of catching us up with the events so far and taking its time to tell the story! Something I am very pleased about! I don't need something big to go down in each episode! Just take your time, telling the story and introducing us to the charactersåq

The live action versions of the characters are great and convinsing, especially Rosatio Dawson as Ahsoka! She has some big shoes to fill, but she manages to get her character right, with her expressions!

Overall I am excited for more of this!

What more could a Star Wars fan want
ha77y73ad9723 August 2023
This is Star Wars! No one will be able to tell me otherwise. As i've watched all of the animated series multiple times in preparation for this i can see where a lot of people are going to get lost. My advise get on and watch the Clone Wars and Rebels as this is truly Rebels season 5.

Waking up this morning and watching the opening scene gives me a great feeling! Theres a very interesting amount of power thats on show. When Vader ignited his red lightsaber in the hallway of the Profundity the immense power and weilding of the force was on show with that dark crimson red saber! Its a very deliberate choice that Skoll and Hati are not to that level where we can see that by the lessor amount of people that they are able to take on. Nonetheless is a prefect opening to the series. Ray Stevenson was going to be a great addition to the Star Wars family and a character that i would love to see his backstory of!!

Theres no words that i can describe Rosario Dawson's portrayal of Ahsoka that hasnt already been said. From her time on the Mandalorian where many reviews were talking about the little lightsaber combat that was on show from Chapter 13 but already we have the fast following saber combat that has been synonymous with Ahsoka over the years of the Clone Wars and rebels. The relationship with Sabine, who i have to say is epic and a prefect casting choice of continuing the characters arc from Rebels, which has already been cemented as a fan favourite is only going to grow and grow.

The mythological aspect of the show has to be such a underutilized story! The world between worlds episode of Rebels is an epic master class in storytelling and with Filoni at the helm of telling such a personal story through his writing and directing cannot be understated.

Episode 2 is out and im going straight into watching this!

Dave filoni cooked
dasistderweg26 October 2023
This show deserves an Oscar nomination !! I swear I didn't enjoy the sequels end nearly most of the media from Disney !! But this was different now I can feel the true awaking of the force , thanks to Dave filonis masterpieces !! Everything comes together and maybe one day ,Dave can save the sequels !! I said it like he saved the prequels from there downs . Rosario Dawson deliverd an outstanding performance you can see how sad Ahsoka truly is after world between worlds , she shows the Ahsoka that couldn't accept her past and tries to go on , her performance is peak !! She delivered with her eyes and voice.

Bland and slow
ewanewanewan24 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
All the characters seem to have the same bland wooden tone. So much time of this episode was wasted with long sequences of ahsoka and Sabine doing things that could have been within 30 seconds. The lightsaber fight at the end just looked dodgy and all over the place and as usual Disney Star Wars doesn't seem to understand how lightsabers work. If you've been stabbed with a lightsaber, your dead. Period. On the plus side, Lothal looked good, score was great, some of the backdrops looked interesting enough to keep your eyes on the screen. Liked the scene where Ahsoka outsmarted those droids. Nice to see a Disney Jedi using their brains for once.

Nearly flawless
babbittc24 August 2023
A spectacular first show that hits hard right out of the gate. Has a couple slow moments but nothing as bad as Andor and actually is good for the overall pacing.

My only two minor complaints that keep this from being a perfect 10 involve music. Most of the music is extremely well done but there's a bit too much of it.

The first issue is during the speeder-bike scene, a very strange space heavy metal song is playing. It doesn't fit and nothing like it has been on Star Wars before, it felt corny and out of place. My second issue is playing music during the final light saber battle. Light sable battles are intense, they don't need music, they don't need help being interesting.

Other than that I was very pleased with this first episode. It's very well done.

Part One: Master and Apprentice
lassegalsgaard23 August 2023
There is a lot hanging on this show - as unfortunate as that might be. In general, these Disney+ shows have started to dip in quality, something that we saw with "The Mandalorian," which premiered its third season back in spring. As the next show up, "Ahsoka" has a lot of goodwill behind it, especially because of the character's previous acclaimed appearances through the universe, and the creative team behind it, led by the character's creator Dave Filoni and a great cast of characters, old and new. The first episode is a solid opening for the show, but it does leave a lot to be desired.

There is a lot of lore already attached to this show. A lot of it comes from "Star Wars Rebels" which does seem like a pretty important pre-watch if you want to be able to follow along with everything 100%. However, Filoni does a good job of placing you in the middle of a big mythology and guides you along the way with ease, making it accessible for everyone. The characters all feel like the versions that we came to love in the animated shows, and Sabine Wren seems like she will be a highlight of the show going forward. The new characters are very fascinating and it'll be interesting to see how their connection to Thrawn will be explained, as well as how they connect to the larger world of the Jedi Order. The episode is quite long and that makes for a mixed pacing, with the action sequences feeling like roller coaster rides, yet the smaller character moments feel painfully stale and very slow. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but the cinematography on display isn't nearly astounding enough to take away from the more bland look the show has. There's not a big aesthetic bump from what has come before, but it does bring some of the animated worlds to life in beautiful fashion. The story is very interesting, but the episode is more focused on properly setting up the characters than really getting into the nitty gritty, which is fine, but has proven to be a detriment to past shows.

"Part One: Master and Apprentice" is a solid return to this part of the "Star Wars" universe, reintroducing us to familiar faces and familiar planets. However, the show's look has lost some of the luster the small screen provided in the beginning, and at times, it doesn't feel like we're in a galaxy far, far away.

Off to a fantastic start!
brandon-mclachlan24 August 2023
A brilliant start to the series which sets up plenty of mystery. Can't wait to see where this goe and it already it feels more cohesive than other Star Wars series like Kenobi. Perhaps due to Dave Filoni's singular vision and drive to tell this story.

A touching nod to Clone Wars and Rebels fans alike, Filonis Phoenix Squadron all seem very much like their animated counterparts. The show definitely seems to be leaning into the mystique of the force, something the animated shows were both very interested in.

I get the impression that World building here was extremely important. I can't wait to see where this wild ride takes us.

Another angry young (infantile) adult angle, getting really old.....
Icecream19731 October 2023
Great premise, good CGI, great value production, overall very good casting (except a couple of badly written characters), mediocre writing for the first episode.

But yet another teeny weeny, angry young (infantile) adult angle, jesus christ, have content writers really run out of ideas?

The Sabine Wren fighting scene was weak & uncommitted, sorry to say but this had more of a girly fight instead of 2 jedi's in action. The lack in effort & severe lack in training was quite clear. Truly hope this is going to improve in the coming episodes.

The verdict is not yet set in stone, so I still hope for improvement in the coming episodes.

Ray Stevenson, may this great actor rest in peace. Sad to see this old devil gone from the world of acting.

Stiff and lifeless
sivadparks-8978623 August 2023
It's nowhere near as bad as Kenobi or Book of Boba Fett, but it's not exactly good outside of Kevin Kiner's score and some good graphics. It's a bad sign when the end credits are the most captivating part of the episode.

The episode is pretty lifeless. There are three action scenes and all three are stiff and awkward. The lightsaber choreography is childish and the actors look uncomfortable trying to keep an intimidating straight face. The acting and dialogue aren't much better. The actors are all fine, but there is so much dead space where they're just looking around (especially Hera). The conversations are repetitive and don't tell much about the characters. There are some clumsy information dumps like Sabine randomly pulling out a hologram from Ezra to let the audience know what their relationship.

The episode is paced terribly in every scene. There are long scenes like Ahsoka looking around a temple or Sabine unlocking a map where the audience has no idea what the characters are trying to accomplish so their actions mean nothing. There's no sense of cause and effect in the story which leaves the audience disengaged and, in my case, bored.

Worst of all is the episode's end where they pull out an obnoxious plot point that seems to have become a trend in Disney Star Wars.

Overall, my expectations were beat coming off Obi-Wan, but as a fan of Clone Wars and Ahsoka's character, I was left underwhelmed.

Oh?
Trey_Trebuchet25 August 2023
Probably my most anticipated show of the year. I love Ahsoka Tano, I love Rebels, I love Davis Filoni, I love Star Wars... what could go wrong?

I guess I kind of see where some of the criticism is coming from. I do think these first couple of episodes were pretty slow, and I can't help but feel like they could have been maybe 20-25 minutes all the same. But maybe I'll feel differently after I've seen the show in it's entirety.

I still loved it though! This Ahsoka does feel a little quieter than the character usually is, and I feel like this may be for good reason. We've not heard much about what happened after her time on Rebels, just that she's looking for Thrawn (and Ezra Bridger, in the process). But there's a gap and plenty of time to explain what's going through her mind. Maybe she's still dealing with the loss of Anakin?

Anyway, I think Dawson feels a lot like the character still, even just through her smirks and facial expressions. It's also great hearing David Tennant return as Huyang! Mary Elizabeth-Winsted is also an excellent Hera Syndulla so far. All of the casting is great.

I don't hate the plot and I don't care that it's similar to The Rise of the Skywalker. Maybe this'll do it better than that movie. But I doubt that's the whole plot. There are 8 episodes altogether and I'm honestly not totally sure what's all going to happen. It's exciting!

I'll admit some of the backdrops looked very fake and I still don't think this needed to be quite as long as it was. But seeing Ahsoka and the other Rebels characters (some I didn't expect to ever see ever again!) was a true delight.

And the action is pretty good so far. I especially loved the opening scene. Effects are mostly tight too, as is all of the makeup.

I trust Dave Filoni. I don't care if the recent Disney's Star Wars stuff hasn't all been awesome, I'm excited.

FANTASTIC START
tomasle199523 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene to Dave's baby is the antithesis of the opening to a phantom menace. A movie that Dave filoni has highly regarded. It mirrors qui gon and obi wan's entrance. The old master with the young good looking padawan (obi wan and shin). This time it's not droids being destroyed. It's people. And the heroes as well. That is just pretty fantastic story telling in Star Wars The rest of the episode was pretty great also. The scene where ahsoka is doing the puzzles took me back to fallen order and survivor.

The shots of her looking into the camera lens honestly made me tear up. As did when she took her good off.

I would continue writing more but currently rewatching it:
  • love letter to rebels
-love Hera and Sabine!

  • intrigued about the mishaps in sabines training
  • can't wait for more!!

Hungry for more!
emmajoiner23 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched the Clone Wars and Rebels series last year, my boyfriend recommended it and the show blew my mind, since than I can safely say that my favorite character in the Star Wars galaxy is Ashoka. When they announced the series I was jumping with joy because this amazing character deserves recognition and spotlight for their own.

The first episode did not disappoint, it was a bit slower but this was necessary to introduce characters, locations and give a start to the storyline. The fact that Hera, Sabine, Lothal and all people and locations appear in the series makes it more nostalgic and heartwarming for a fellow fan. The plot of finding Ezra already sounds exciting. The end was shocking! But can't wait to see more!

Rosario Dawson is amazing as Ashoka as well as Ewan Mcgregor's wife as Hera! Absolutely love them!!

Dave Filoni brings us a terrific premiere with a spectacular lightsaber duel and a story worth telling, Ahsoka met my expectations
Holt34423 August 2023
Part One: Master and Apprentice is directed and written by none other than Dave Filoni, the showrunner and co-creator of the title character Ahsoka is a show I have anticipated since it first was revealed, more so during the first trailer as it looked fantastic and intriguing. We then knew it was going to be season 5 of Rebels in a way, following the story which the epilogue of that show set up, of all the flaws that show had, it contained some great episodes but most importantly some incredible characters which are making their live action debut in this show. With a premiere of 50 minutes, the plot moves slow and reintroduces all these characters from Rebels and establishing all plot threads, it's how a serialized show should be and Dave Filoni does it well.

The premise of the show is: After the fall of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. If you have seen the trailer, you know exactly what that threat is, the Heir of the Empire, Thrawn. The premise of this episode is: A valuable prisoner escapes New Republic custody; a search for answers reunites two old friends.

The shows stars Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant voices Huyang who returns from his role in Clone Wars, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and finally Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger. Judging by the guest stars in the show, there are many characters we know. For this episode, Clancy Brown appears as Governor Ryder Azadi, reprising his voice role from Rebels. It's a good small appearance. What can I say about the acting in this episode? I really liked all the appearances, the thing is how this episode is more about moving the story along and reintroducing characters which doesn't give time for monologues or great acting, but that's fine. These actors do a brilliant job at portraying these characters accurately, it's a nice transition to live action and how it should be. The characterization is right and the actors nail the mannerisms. I especially like the performance of Ray Stevenson, Rosario Dawson, Ivanna Sakhno and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Ray Stevenson does a terrific job portraying the antagonist, doing it in this Shakespearian way, great performance reminiscent of his acting in Rome it feels like.

Star Wars has always been reminiscent of Samurai movies, especially Kurosawa's, Dave Filoni brings the inspiration and style back to Star Wars. Ahsoka became the Star Wars answer to a Ronin and you see the inspiration in every fight sequence she's in, the music too. Excellent! The lightsaber duel in the end lived up to my expectations of how a lightsaber duel should be, it was against Sabine Wren and Shin Hati, the former had been trained in the arts by Kanan Jarrus and used the Darksaber in Rebels whilst the latter of them had shown their skill in previous scenes which showed her to be a formidable opponent. It was choreographed extremely well which made me look forward to the upcoming lightsaber duels, especially the ones Ahsoka will be apart. The production design and overall quality, it's all there and I would say the premiere has the same quality of Andor, but these shows are two totally different shows, Ahsoka has likely a much bigger budget because of the extensive visual effects and big names attached to it whilst Andor is more practical effects. I'm sure the quality will stay the same, so far so good as you say. Dave Filoni's direction and writing is top notch, you see in each scene his passion and love for the story and characters, these characters from Clone Wars and especially Rebels is his babies. I have nothing but praise for the writing and direction, even Sabine Wren has improved a lot since Rebels as she felt like a character without flaws but that's changed now. Random thought; The opening crawl is back, different and in red text but great none the less. To summarize my review, I absolutely loved every second of the episode, it took awhile but Star Wars is back, Dave Filoni revived it. Ahsoka and Andor is what is needed for the franchise.

Average opening episode
JamesR197330 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Never watched any of the animated series so coming to this fresh with fairly low expectations.

It wasn't bad - but, like many Star Wars spin offs now (apart from Andor), it feels like everyone is going through the motions.

Good points: the FX, good music, general production design and the robot.

Bad points: stilted dialogue and contrived scenes for plot purposes.

Had to laugh at the pondering of the Holocube "map" thing. Anyone who's played "The Room" could have figured that out in a few minutes. Why it needed Sabine Wren to chin stroke over it for a few hours I've got no idea. In addition, does no one else use that road that we had multiple shots of her speeding along?

I'll stick with it and see where it goes - but I'm not holding my breath.

From Animation to Live Acting flawless
paulanthonyconwell7 October 2023
Sooo many people get high brow about each starwars series after the films, to write a series that fills a gap in the story line between films is hard, but this episode brought this time line, this story line to life. Rosario Dawson, i am a huge fan of your work, this story line really captured my imagination, i now feel not doing the animated series as live action series was a mistake. The casting from the first to the last episode was on point. Ahsoka and Sabine, two strong Women, trying to air their views and come up with a plan, one that Master and Apprentice needed to sort out, before the story could move one, was nothing short of brilliant, Sabine intelligent headstrong independent young woman, trying to curb her feelings for a brother in arms, was heart felt. It again drew me back to the animated series, everything in the first episode was on point. I wanted the next episode there and then, it killed me to wait a week. My kids were like honestly, you cannot wait a week! Mum says there is plenty of work around the house to do!lol.

what more could a Star Wars fan want? better writing
imizrahi200224 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For one... and i'm finally writing my first review with spoilers... first off...it's better than a six rating...more like six point five. Passing but nothing 'all that special'. Believe me, i WISH it was better... but the scene where the captain of the ship lets the people who claim to be Jedi on his ship and meets them with the security detail? Are you KIDding me? That was no captain. The arrogance aLONE...and risking his crew members with the asSUMPTion that whoever they were, they could be handled...i'm REALly glad he got what he deserved...but that was VERY poor writing, in my opinion... the rest is...well...same ole same ole...not BAD, really... but predictable, although well done...the money gets spent on the right stuff so it LOOKS good...good costumes and makeup...good CGI...good acting... mediocre story. So far... and a predictable beginning to the second episode...which, again, shows mediocre writing... so...i'm GLAD so many people are enjoying it, but... i'm not a kid. I'll watch one or two more. If it doesn't improve, i'll just leave it to those that are enjoying the nostalgic mediocrity... and, just for the record...there wasn't ANY Star Wars movie that i didn't like...there was a PART of one(the ending of the 3rd, chronological, movie) i thought was riDICulous, but that's IT...otherwise i found them pretty enjoyable, overall...

Amazing Return To Form For Star Wars
gaffer260223 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
From the red opening crawl to Sabine lying on the ground at the end, I was hooked the entire way through the episode. I love how the music sounds like John Williams' scores, even with one theme sounding like Han and Leia's theme from Empire Strikes Back. I loved the comedy, like a jammed signal going "I'm not,...*jamming*,... Jamming". The CGI from ILM is great, with the Live-Action version of the Loth-Cat looking incredibly realistic. I love how Morgan Elsbeth references the Star Wars: Jedi games by talking about the Nightsisters before following it up with "I'm a survivor." This is probably a stretch, though, and even if it wasn't I doubt that it was intention.

Overall, amazing and a great return to form. Can't wait for more.

A good start to Rebels Season 5
poseyfan24 August 2023
Text: Well, after months of waiting, Ahsoka is here!

I am pleased to say that I am overall satisfied with the first 2 episodes. I have a few problems with some choices here and there, but first the positives.

The casting is perfect! Sabine is a standout.

The set pieces and cinematography are fantastic. It felt very cinematic.

I love the newcomers - the fallen Jedi. If that is the correct term

The lightsaber fights were pretty good

It feels like Rebels Season 5

Great setup for the rest of the season. It took it's time and that was very much appreciated

There is an obvious point to this show

Some little things I didn't like:

Ahsoka seems a little bored - or I guess I should say Rosario

Some of the writing didn't do it for me

The story is too much akin to the Rise of Skywalker

Well, I'm excited for future episodes.

Lacks passion, originality and decent script writing
julianhocking25 August 2023
Overall look and feel is nice, scene setting is nicely done

Main irks for me:

  • Ahsoka looks bored AF and doesn't faithfully represent the giddy Ahsoka from the series

  • more secret map holocubes

  • people dying from a slash to the leg, yet mary sues survive stomach stabs

  • on that note, stop with the stomach stabs that are perfectly removed and thus preserving the victim, it worked for Darth Maul/Qui Gon as he moved directly away/backwards to his next fight, all else make zero sense

  • too many "super powered girl bosses" - massive yawn when literally everyone is doing it

= Disappointing.

Excellent Start
jameswyattranks23 August 2023
Ahsoka looks set to be yet another successful Star Wars series. The dynamic between Sabine and Ahsoka looks to be very important to the story going forward and it's put across excellently. Natasha Liu Bordizzo delivers her lines in a way that feel so much like Rebels!

Absolutely love Huyang. Baylan is menacing yet they keep a sort of humour with him as well as a bit of a conscience which makes him more interesting, Shin Hati is perfect and definitely has less of a conscience and Morgan Elsbeth is such an interesting character and I can't wait to see what more will happen with her. Every time Thrawn is mentioned I get chills.

Great expectations for the rest of the season.
kulsport24 August 2023
Great expectations for the rest of the season.

Finally, finally, the (long) wait for this series is finally over.

And, indeed, it was a very enjoyable first episode, with everything that Star Wars should be, Jedi, battles, spaceships, etc ... between the good guys and the bad guys.

Indeed, the time when Rosario was running around naked in a movie has been over for a while and she is indeed the perfect actress for the role of Ahsoka.

It would not be a bad idea itself, to make a cinema movie starring this character at some point in the (near, distant) future. But the next major series of theatrical films only start from 2027 and are sequels to the previous ones.

So, let's be clear about this new series. It should be a very good series (perhaps the best).
